  • Based on the Broadway play by Neil Simon, this tells the story of two mismatched friends, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Felix is a neat, tidy, and healthy nut, a photographer at a portrait studio, and a connoisseur of classical music. Because of this, his wife divorced Felix and threw him out of his apartment for good. Desperately in the need of a place to live, he moves in with his longtime childhood friend, Oscar Madison, a sports journalist for the New York Times. What he realizes is that Oscar is the exact opposite of him: sloppy, messy, and doesn't eat the right foods. Felix's cleaning, hygienic tips, and healthiness annoys Oscar while Oscar's crazy world of living like a pig upsets Felix. But in the process they'll learn that love, trust, and friendship are more important than living in different worlds Tony Randall and Jack Klugman star.Al Molinaro 1970

      Douglas Perkins Haha!! If you are serious and talking about the scene @ 1:01, that's Central Park in Manhattan, New York. Not Astoria Park in Queens, New York. The Gulf+Building (now the Trump International Hotel and Tower), located: Columbus Circle, Manhattan and The Majestic, located at 115 Central Park West, between West 71st Street & West 72nd Street, Manhattan can be seen in the background.

      Was always curious what Felix & Oscar we’re doing at what appears to be a festival of some sort for Indians or middle easterners with the streamers in background. What was that all about? Was that from an episode I never saw? I’m from NYC & gen x. 11pm was prime time for classic tv. Odd couple, honeymooners, Star Trek & twilight zone then some bars on the screen followed by the nation anthem.

    I love the way Felix is walking down the sidewalk, and the way Oscar exits the cab and throws the money to the driver. Both scenes are so totally NYC and portrayed as only native New Yorkers could do.

    • @valerietaylor9615
      @valerietaylor9615 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Neither Klugman nor Randall were native New Yorkers. Klugman was from South Philly; Randall, from Oklahoma ( don’t remember which town/city.) Tony Randall lived in New York later, though. He lived in a brownstone, “ indecently close” (i.e. about a ten-minute walk) from the Metropolitan Opera. He was an opera buff. 🎼

      Not quite: watching today you can see they added the beginning prologue to show that the 'odd couple' were just two friends dumped by their wives instead of two gay guys living with each other. Especially since one could assume that Felix's mild and meek nature is somehow effeminate.

      KirkSH52 Classic sitcom. there hard to come by now. everybody wants to be politically correct. If this show was on today. Oscar will be a Trump guy and Felix would probably be a Hillary. can't say for sure because . Felix would probably not vote this election because of Hillary's corruption. but he definitely won't be a Trump guy.

    • @musicoldies83
      @musicoldies83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@MrThermostatic In a media interview with Gary Marshall back in 2004, he specifically stated that all of those Manhattan scenes were unscripted and filmed while Jack & Tony walked around Manhattan, even the one with the boy scout helping the old lady across the street. Of course, they had to quickly approach each of the pedestrians and have them sign a waiver form to have those shots appear in the opening credits to each of the sitcom episodes.

    • @MrThermostatic
      @MrThermostatic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      So you actually believe that Tony Randall tried to help an old woman across the street, she smacks him with her pocketbook and then he's punched by a Boy Scout and that is not scripted?

    • @musicoldies83
      @musicoldies83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@MrThermostatic It's not about what I believe, it's what Garry Marshall stated how the episodes were shot. They were filming shots of Jack & Tony walking the streets of Manhattan and them intentionally interacting with other New Yorkers, which took many hours where many shots were taken. They then showed the ones that they thought were the most comical, and added music and narration to them. You can go order The Odd Couple series outtakes, where you can here the same explanation for yourself. If you still don't believe that, then you're calling the producer of the show, Garry Marshall, a liar, which of course is your prerogative, but certainly doesn't hold much weight as you just being a casual fan of the show.

    I always preferred the television adaptation over the movie. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall were hilarious. Their timing was always spot on, and they thoroughly enjoyed their work. The show was clean, comical and uplifting, with talented actors and actresses, unlike today’ television. Thank you Jack and Tony for bringing a bit of humor to us, and may God rest your souls.

    In elementary school, i used to model myself after Oscar Madison, all the way down to mustard stains all over my brown cardigan sweater, under wear hung over the lamp shade, sleeping on the wrong end of the bed. He was my hero. As an unexpected bonus, my parents dared not venture into my room and they were cool with the phase I was going through, never said a word (perhaps they were amused and were curious to just how far I would take things🤔) Well here I am, 50 years later, once again, living the life of Oscar. My good friend is about to become Felix. If he doesn't watch his step, he too will get the frying pan shoved in his grill as he's exiting the property, thinking it's only temporary.

    Jack and Tony were incredibly talented veteran actors. The entire supporting cast members were also top notch players. This TV theme song was one of the best. I was 13 in 1970. I made money mowing lawns. I purchased a miniature reel to reel tape recorder in part to record a lot of these great TV theme songs. Another outstanding TV theme song is from the show "Banacek". More excellent examples are the TV theme song from the show "The Fugitive". Peter Rugolo (music arranger) is responsible for that theme song as well as many others such as the show "Leave it to Beaver". Another memorable and iconic TV theme song is Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn".

      I always wondered about the guy at 0:15 who stops to look at Tony Randall sitting on his suitcase - was he just a passerby who thought 'That guy looks like Tony Randall'? Reminds me of the woman standing behind Mary Tyler Moore throwing her hat up in the air and clearly wondering 'What is this girl doing?' (I remember a guy once phoned in to the NPR quiz show 'Whad'Ya Know?' and claimed that was his mother.)

    Yes How I first recall watching this show in the Springtime of 1970 and The 1st oine I saw was The one of the sick parrot who came back to life in the magic Box but my most favorite one was with the Greyhound named Golden Earrings and I also liked that one allot that I saw in rerun syndication of which Oscar & Felix met an Elderly Odd Couple with a messier apartment and Felix then said to Oscar if you don't clean up your act then our apartment will look like this in just a few years." Great Show

    The things you learn on Wikipedia: The announcer here is Bill Woodson, the same actor who voiced the narration on "Superfriends" from the second season until the end of its run ("Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice...") and who recorded all the intros to Les Nessman's newscasts on the original "WKRP in Cincinnati." And he's still alive into his late 90s!

    I am fascinated by this show for several reasons:
    1. This show was on before I was born but I remember my father in the 80's would watch it with me and I didn't understand what was so funny but as an adult, I think it's one of the greatest shows.
    2. I got to become a fan of Jack Klugman because of the Twilight zone and never heard of Tony Randall until this show and I love them both. Legendary actors and their chemistry was off the charts.
    3. As a historian, I'm fascinated by what old New York City was like before it because the hell hole it is now. I say this because I am a born and raised life long New Yorker.
    To be able to live through this time again, would be amazing just for one day
