This AWD MK4 VR6 Turbo fights to make power

  • Not only is this VR6 Turbo charged, it's also all wheel drive as well. We try to work through boost control, dialing in the W/M setup, and plenty of other hurtles to see just how much horsepower it can make. We did the AWD conversion in this MK4 Jetta a few years back, however the main reason the vehicle is in this time is for some trouble shooting and to make more power.
    This footage is captured over a few months as it took lots of time to hammer out the possible issues to try and make the power it's supposed to.

Didn't even really sound like a VR until that muffler went bye bye. Figures that reducer on the MAF was choking it and making it act funny. 3" inlet is definitely too small for that thing anyways. Hey man what’s up, love the awd vrt! I want to give you a suggestion to help you solve the low power issue on that car. Every time you did a pull I could hear the DV valve surging going shhh shhh shhh. That means that the spring or adjustment is too soft for the boost level and volume of air. I can almost guarantee that it is also lifting slightly during boost and allowing precious power to scape and capping how much power you are making. Try plugging it and doing a run to see if anything changes. Good luck and keep up the great work!

    • @COMotorsports
      @COMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the feedback, it's very possible the DV is opening slightly up top but the major issue with it was the intake/maf setup, as you can see in the video. Thanks for the insight. 👍👍

  • @aRYANz88
    @aRYANz88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That first pull you made sounded really strong. Even for 310 initially it sounded well and good. She definitely has some life left. I always like to boost leak test up to the pressure im running. Because testing at 10 psi, it might hold well, but once you get to 15-20 and above it'll leak. That way im not guessing. good job though. Id defiantly be happy with your work if that was my car.

    • @COMotorsports
      @COMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, we knew it wasn't a boost leak. As it would take all the boost I could feed it. It was the oscillation, and erratic behavior which was the problem.

    You guys should look into using a Cortex EBC (electronic boost controller). . Way better then that apexi. It laptop tuneable will do boost by gear, boost by rpm and has inputs and outputs. Can directly log Afr boost etc. Can also fully control the watermeth. It’s awesome on a chip tuned Vr6.
    On my promaf 630 tune on my Vr6 I could easily control boost and afr to make mid 500whp on my mk3 Vrt.

    • @COMotorsports
      @COMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks the apexi will do boost per gear and boost per rpm as well. They work good and can be had for cheap these days. This car however likely has standalone in its future so all that stuff will be sold and controlled strictly by the ECU.

    i have a 24v vr6 with about 80k miles on the motor. it’s stock for the most part besides a tune and intake. i plan on getting a Techtonics Tuning 2” downpipe and porting the stock manifolds. After that, the cams will come. From there, i’m not sure what else to do without forced air induction. if i build a vrt or even supercharged, i would still want it to be as reliable as a daily. how possible is that? i’ll be perfectly happy with 300-400hp, if that’s what will keep me reliable. but if i can hit 500-600 and be just as reliable, that’s even better. any suggestions?

    • @COMotorsports
      @COMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Turbo setups can and will be reliable as long as you put the right parts on it. Build it with junk and it will be junk, skimp on the tune and it will be junk. The only reason turbo setups get a bad wrap is because it's so easy to make more power with them. So people get greedy and push beyond what they're parts are capable of.
