Nothing tops her, nothing beats her,, nothing is better than, equal,,,only one Judy Gardland,,,more than a singer , an actress,,,a superb performer that lived a hell,,,,and still shined,,,and still does,,,
I love her little laugh at the end. So genuine. No one can touch her in terms of conviction to a song. She lives it, she breathes it, it totally consumes her.
💯 Like most memories of a past romance, they are scattered with many different emotions. She plays the memory so well with gesture and facial expression.
this song reduces me to tears every time I hear Judy sing. I have heard many versions including Streisand's but none of them can touch Judys version. This was written for her and my God she is perfect for it.
THIS is how one doesn't only sing or performs a song but INHABITS a song so that the song and the singer are fused so tightly together that the audience can't separate one from the other.
+Mark Innocenzi Maybe, if you exclude Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow" or Judy Garland sing "Get Happy" or Judy Garland singing "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" or Judy Garland singing ...
+Mark Innocenzi I just watched it again and for me it always comes down to a couple of things. First, after she motions the trombone player over, we're watching a 4+ minute unbroken take. She's got to carry this scene by herself with no help from any editing tricks. Second, I'm always impressed by the sheer physicality of that performance. Notice how she starts out anchored to the piano. And then she starts to wander among the musicians--but on the first crescendo of the song she's back at the piano. In the meantime she's incredibly expressive with how she's using her hands and arms; great sweeping gestures, etc. And then when the song winds down and she's going to end up sitting down, notice how her hands are in a prayerful position. Its just absolutely magic.
I can’t understand why anyone would want to remake this movie (and twice now??!!) when this version was perfect in every way. Judy was one of the Wonders of the World! Divine lady!!
Actually this movie is the second remake of “what price Hollywood” and a remake of the ‘Thirties version with Janet Gaynor. It was already an old warhorse when Garland got to it. But the story has always been a solid-gold tearjerker and still holds up even when compared to the Streisand and Gaga versions.
This woman was impeccable. Her instincts are off the charts. Every nuance and movement poised and intuitive. Is it all choreographed or is she making split second decisions based upon each intricate moment? Only she knows for sure. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
Although I agree that Judy should have won the Oscar, there’s no need to trash Grace Kelly. As long as REAR WINDOW is available to view, Grace Kelly will never be forgotten. Both women were goddesses for different reasons.
This is when a star and a song came together and exploded in a supernova. Judy Garland singing "The Man That Got Away" in A STAR IS BORN is a work of art by itself. I don't think James Mason was just acting when he played the following scene, trying to tell her she's an incandescent star and finally saying, "I just want to look at you."
Let's park the acting, the command, the technique, the truth. They're all a given. Let's consider for a moment the musician. She knows that this is a deathless classic. The fourth beat of the melodic phrases repeatedly up the emotional ante. She knows that, even on a fourth-beat word, such as 'the' or 'for', it's the key to unlock this great song's mounting intensity. She's not afraid to open those insognificant words up, on the vowel, in order to fill the sails for what follows. The musicians know that too, and she knows that they know, and what I find so very moving are her countless glances of gratitude, of humour even, of collusion, of ''Thank you, boys, for supporting me' which pepper this outstanding performance by an outstanding artist in what is, for me, her most outstanding performance. Thank you, TH-cam, Alexandra, for putting this up.
I just about fell over when I first saw the fully restored version of this movie before the studio hacked it to pieces. I believe it effectively cost her a well deserved Academy Award. She was only 32 during this filming. With that though came her deeper woman’s voice. Which I love especially in that little show stopper, The Man That Got Away. It’s perhaps one of my all time favorites, and out of her catalogue of songs, my absolute favorite of HERS! Man she knocked me off my feet with that number. I’ll never forget her! This is a true legend.
@@taylordowning2533 But I think some of the film was actually trashed, so there is no way to truly put the original back together. The "restoration" I saw had still photos to fill gaps where they had some audio, but the film visuals had been tossed in the trash. What a waste!
Sometimes the competition is fierce (I would say 1950), but not this year. I have always thought it was more a popularity contest, and thought Judy Garland was liked by her peers, but maybe not. She had been around long enough though, no doubt she just shrugged her shoulders and went on.
My God!!!! She performs the hell out of this song!! She had some of the best chops in the business!! The way she internalizes each note and the depth and richness of her voice at this time in her career is bar none!!! She was a hell of an artist! God bless you Judy!!
I saw the film today for the very first time and I've got to say that she made me cry. What emotion in her voice! My God, she couldn't half bring meaning to every word and every note.

Every note, every gesture - full of meaning - just as she was. Legends never die ❤❤❤. She really did live inside every single note, didn’t she? *swoon*
As a Christian, I delight in the million ways that God's grace manifests itself in this world; and how anyone can listen to a glorious performance like this, and still doubt that human beings have souls, is utterly beyond me. Among the many jewels in these few minutes: listen to how (seemingly) effortlessly Judy executes a singer's version of a "grand jete", as she vaults upward at 2:30 on "No MORE that onetime thrill..." Magnificent.
The film was a masterpiece and this song is for me, is Judy at her greatest. James Mason's final scene still makes me cry and Judy's final scene is breathtaking. This is what a true star was, not these one movie princesses without any talent....
When I watched it for the first time a few months ago, I almost gave out a cry during the scene in the police station toward the end. When I finished it, I was almost convinced that Judy was a goddess since she gave a tour-de-force performance.

The stars have lost their glitter
The winds grow colder
Suddenly you're older
And all because of the man that got away
No more his eager call
The writings on the wall
The dreams you dreamed have all
Gone astray
The man that won you
Has run off and undone you
That great beginning
Has seen the final inning
Don't know what happened
It's all a crazy game
No more that all-time thrill
For you've been through the mill
And never a new love will
Be the same
Good riddance, goodbye
Every trick of his you're on to
But, fools will be fools
And where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher
It's lonelier and tougher
With hope you burn up
Tomorrow he will turn up
There's just no letup the live-long night and day
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one-man woman looking for
The man that got away
The man that got away
Thanks!

There will never be another like her❤
Yes, I remember hearing about that on TCM.
She sounded amazing. Pure talent.
I just saw that on TCM! Left a similar comment above! 😉😉💗💗
That incredible voice!
Great, lovly person - lady Judy still lives on❤❤❤
Mermerizing! I can't take my eyes away from this performance!
Just amazing!! The BEST version of "A Star is Born" ever!
The World wouldn't have been the same if Judy Garland hadn't passed by.
Absolute.....perfection.
What a lovely thing to say :) very true
I agree! She would have even more amazing that Barbara Streisand and Bett Miller put together!
That is so sweet of you to say!
This comment is as classy as she is
💎👒
Nothing tops her, nothing beats her,, nothing is better than, equal,,,only one Judy Gardland,,,more than a singer , an actress,,,a superb performer that lived a hell,,,,and still shined,,,and still does,,,
One of the very best performance/recordings...ever...ever!!!😮
The greatest torch song sung by the greatest singer of torch songs......period.
simply the greatest 5 minutes in movie history!!!!
you may just be right there.
+Mark Innocenzi
Maybe, if you exclude Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow" or Judy Garland sing "Get Happy" or Judy Garland singing "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" or Judy Garland singing ...
+PackerBronco i get your point. you also can throw in "lucky day".
I might have to agree with you
The greatest singer ever in Hollywood, nobody can touch her in pure talent.
this is absolutely and clearly one the cinema's greatest vocal performances. it leaves you with chills
This may be a remake but Judy Garland owns this movie.
Anything pales after this because no one can match her raw talent.
This is one of the greatest performances of all time. She just blows me away.
I still get chills hearing this, sung by the one and only Judy. What a voice and what a powerful performance. Whew.
This is one of the most fabulous songs she has ever sung.....
53 years ago today the world lost the beautiful Judy Garland❤️❤️ R.I.P Judy💖
This woman was impeccable. Her instincts are off the charts. Every nuance and movement poised and intuitive. Is it all choreographed or is she making split second decisions based upon each intricate moment? Only she knows for sure. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
What a voice! What a woman! What a life! R.I.P., Frances Gumm.
Take it from the top.
Ok this woman was such an extraordinary talent.
Judy was a generational 💎 a pure genious!❤🎉🎉🎉
Judy was the greatest.
She was robbed of the Oscar
No one would remember Grace Kelly if she hadn’t married into royalty:
Judy was a goddess!
Very True💝
Although I agree that Judy should have won the Oscar, there’s no need to trash Grace Kelly. As long as REAR WINDOW is available to view, Grace Kelly will never be forgotten. Both women were goddesses for different reasons.
This is when a star and a song came together and exploded in a supernova. Judy Garland singing "The Man That Got Away" in A STAR IS BORN is a work of art by itself. I don't think James Mason was just acting when he played the following scene, trying to tell her she's an incandescent star and finally saying, "I just want to look at you."
Kirstin
Kirstin,
Doesn't Norman commit suicide after he says that to Esther?
Are you talking about the scene where he walks into the Ocean?
ILOVE HER AND LIZA..FOREVER!!
Even the musicians are so in awe of her.
Happy 100th birthday 🙏🏻❤
Came looking for a memory...and found it. Wonderful. Better than I remembered it. Thank you.
somewhere over the rainbow, judy garland still sings eternally.
The greatest...ever! PERIOD!
This is the song of my life.
How was it seeing the fully restored version? I always wanted to see it.
@@taylordowning2533 It’s well worth getting the Blu-Ray of
A Star is Born to see it.
@@taylordowning2533 But I think some of the film was actually trashed, so there is no way to truly put the original back together. The "restoration" I saw had still photos to fill gaps where they had some audio, but the film visuals had been tossed in the trash. What a waste!
She really was absolutely incredible, gave me chills and this isn't usually my kind of music.
One word: Perfection...!!!
54 years without Judy Garland❤️❤️
R.I.P Judy Garland❤️❤️
June 10th 1922 - June 22nd 1969
No one remembers Grace Kelly in the Country Girl. Judy Garland's performance in a Star Is Born is immortal. Ironically, it didn't need an Oscar.
Sometimes the competition is fierce (I would say 1950), but not this year. I have always thought it was more a popularity contest, and thought Judy Garland was liked by her peers, but maybe not. She had been around long enough though, no doubt she just shrugged her shoulders and went on.
SANG, Judy!!!
I'm 55 and a lifelong fan I will stand by my opinion forever that Judy was robbed of the best actress Oscar for a Star is born she sang her heart out in this movie a sight we will never see again for me the song The Man That Got Away says it all for Judy and for me God bless you Judy 💓💓💓
Thank you Gilmore girls for introducing me to such an amazing movie once again!
Jennica which episode was this featured in on gg?
Season 5 episode 16, titled " So.... Good Talk "like the last minute and 30 seconds of the episode .
Its was PS I Love You for me.
Absolutely perfect. Garland the Great!
Every note, every gesture - full of meaning - just as she was. Legends never die ❤❤❤. She really did live inside every single note, didn’t she? *swoon*
😢 she was a gorgeous soul ❤
This amazing song 🎵 timeless ❤Aug 2024😢
As a Christian, I delight in the million ways that God's grace manifests itself in this world; and how anyone can listen to a glorious performance like this, and still doubt that human beings have souls, is utterly beyond me. Among the many jewels in these few minutes: listen to how (seemingly) effortlessly Judy executes a singer's version of a "grand jete", as she vaults upward at 2:30 on "No MORE that onetime thrill..." Magnificent.
you're not the only one listening to this masterpiece in 2022!
Judy should have the oscar
She might have if she hadn't taken so many pills.
why should I bother, there's so many that have been touched by this music, I'm just grateful.
All time greatest voice❤
The film was a masterpiece and this song is for me, is Judy at her greatest. James Mason's final scene still makes me cry and Judy's final scene is breathtaking. This is what a true star was, not these one movie princesses without any talent....
When I watched it for the first time a few months ago, I almost gave out a cry during the scene in the police station toward the end. When I finished it, I was almost convinced that Judy was a goddess since she gave a tour-de-force performance.
I agree she deserved the Oscar for this
This haunting melody has been a favorite of mine for many many years. Judy sure knows how to belt one out. I miss her.
50 years since she died. 50 years since Stonewall. I am 76.ut with Harvey. So proud. I love youn all.God bless America
Love you too
The. 😊😊best. version
The incomparable Ms. #JudyGarland made the earth shake and hearts break EVERY time she sung. This performance, however, made the universe vibrate and leap. She was just that talented and gifted! Damn! #RIP
Nice tribute! 💗💗💗💗
