I'm pretty sure the self deprication is a way to deal with anxiety. At least, it is for me, and having heard him talking about how he manages it, I really think it's the case. When you insult yourself first, you not only lower your own expectations about yourself (which is actually really helpful) you also take the hypotetical words out of other people's mouth, so they can't take you by surprise
