Most of my collection is dvd with a few blu ray. And i like my stuff to be close to mint so i look for sales online. Hard to find stuff in person thats in good condition
Streaming is getting expensive too.. Netflix just increased their 4k subscription to 25 US $ a month..
They made $8.71 billion profit in the last quarter.. That is insane!
$25 is still cheaper than one new 4K and you have access to a lot of films and television. I got the service with advertising and it's just $7.99 and I have Criterion and Prime. It's less than $40 and throw Tubi and a few others in there and it's a far more affordable than a couple of new 4Ks.
Even the bottom ad supported tier went up
Went to Walmart yesterday (Toronto, CA) and the prices have DROPPED. It wasn't a sale. Lots of 4k under $20.
Because of you Jamie, I have actually started moving back toward physical media. I just went to JB today and picked up a blu-ray Superman animated series for fairly cheap. Super (no pun intended) happy to be moving back to physical.
I agree, you can make it as expensive/cheap as you want. As a collector I avoid duplicates as much as possible. A lot of collectors end up losing a lot of money because they always want to update their collection to the latest format (in this case to 4k) just because the video image looks a little bit better or the sound is slightly better. There are many 4k blurays with the exact same audio track as regular blurays. Their 4K is not going to improve the sound when the tracks are the same. No need to double dip. Your regular 1080p bluray discs are going to remain in good condition for a very long time cause they have a scratch resistant coating.
I have about 40 movies made up of boxsets/steelboxes/steelbooks (limited editions) that cost me ~$4k which includes shipping + tax. I decided to go for quality over quantity b/c I have limited space.
It's as expensive as you wish it to be. Depending on the movie, I buy my all time favourites on 4k, films I love on blu ray, almost everything else on dvd. Most of the time as long as I have access to it I'm happy.

OK, I'm old; but I remember in the early days of VHS tapes when a C- grade sci-fi horror movie like Syngenor (1990) was considered a bargain at $60-- not adjusted for inflation.
The moment K-mart, Target, and Big W stopped carrying DVD/Blus JBHIFI sales went down the toilet. When there was price competition for media sales were all over the place. Now JB doesn’t have to compete with anyone. Even the sales now are still overpriced. Sanity is gone and that is mostly because they never had anything price right, and EasyDVD has been 25% higher on price since physical stores ceased.
The Australian market for media today is the worst it’s been because even JB is phasing them out. However, like everything, there is money to be made and things come full circle, and DVD/Blus will make a comeback in all those stores.
The best place to build a collection on a budget in Australia is through places like Vinnies, Red Cross, Salvos etc. the choice is a crapshoot, but I’ve found bangers over the years.
Living in the UK for the last couple years I can say that HMV is aware how popular film and TV are and they often have a half dozen sales, as well as carrying labels like Criterion, Radiance, Second Sight, Arrow, Indicator, etc. I’m thankful they haven’t thrown collectors to the wolves like the Australian market.
Over 1200 films and TV series with 993 of them being DVD, and I love it. Purchased mostly from bookstores and eBay. I use an app to keep track of everything. When I shop, I like to keep bookmarks on Amazon and Ebay to compare pricing. Enjoy your films and video games people
I started collecting again in 2023 since the dvd era. I managed to get over 1300 movies and shows since 2023. 90-95% of my collection is bluray and almost 75% of that are used. Im glad I got the majority of my favourites and have upgraded a few to 4k already but I'm still super content with regular blurays.

I can’t fathom spending 40 bucks for an individual film nowadays..BUT… what I do is I buy in bulk ( particularly boutique labels) so what I do is I’ll buy about 10 films at one time .. roughly $300 bucks give or take , then I’ll just use affirm , zip , PayPal pay in 4 etc … and just pay $70 bucks every 2 weeks till it’s paid off .

Same person: pays for 5 different streaming services at 20 dollars a pop, has ads they cant skip, may deal with buffering, content may not be available in years to come, pays for a digital rental of a new release if they choose so for an additional cost.
Streaming can cost just as much or more depending on what one does with the service no different in regards to physical media, its as cheap or expensive as you wanna make it.
Hey Jamie, I'd like to see what your top 100 films are. Maybe in an incremental series, just a suggestion.

The thrift store and used shop argument is bad.
You assume a great or even fairly decent selection and that is not often the case. Even our better Goodwills are reducing the amount they put out. If more people take up collecting, the selection will get worse. As that happens, prices on used items will increase.
I called the price hikes back in 2023 and I was right. It's because I don't wear rose colored glasses and I am also aware hard media isn't immune to inflation.

i don't need every movie on 4K or special edition, some times, yes i what the best i can get, but is not the case every time. some times a DvD is more than ok for me.
They need to dropped that price to complete with streaming

Sony is only ceasesing production on making blank blu-rays. Sony is still continuing making blu-ray film's. A few months ago. Sony made a deal with Disney. To transfer their production to Sony.

4k collectable edition steelbooks are expensive i.e "Wolverine Deadpool", "Willow" steelbook. They control Supply and it manipulation. However can save with slipcover version. Also Collectors are no longer paying for transfer quality.
They paying top $$$ just for pretty art work 😂 on piece of tin. Limited edition steelbook art .....it the Collectors buying it this FOMO and driving prices up.

4K is NOT a new format. We have had it for 11 years at this point.
It’s the newest format, the current high end in terms of collecting

Why not because in my opinion a Bluray/4K player makes more sense for DVD's today than just owning a DVD player, believe it or not but not everyone is running after 4K.
And yes, I still watch VHS 📼❤ every now and then because it's fun, you don't have to understand that.

If you have a ub820 it will upscale it so its better than watching a vhs. Also there are a lot of things that never got a blu ray release only a dvd one.
absolutely, if you are going to buy a 4K TV then why would you then watch DVD on it? It just demonstrates the TV owner's poor judgement, and maybe eye sight too? Also DVD has regions, oficially 4K does not
@ how is it poor judgment? some poeple cant afford to buy everything in 4k, some things were only ever released on DVD. so what dvd has regions? blu ray has region locks too. your whole comment is braindead
