Gosh your comment " the battle to get better but you can't" you summed that so concisely. You encourage me as I'm battling my own chronic health condition which leave me on the sofa most days. I can tell where you come with those tears and you've been battling things for a heck of a lot longer than I have. It's the people around us that struggle that things aren't going to get better and constantly feel guilty for being ill.
I never normally comment before I've even finished watching a video, but you talking about your Grandad got me. I had a very similar relationship with mine, and even when he was in hospital towards the end he was always more concerned about my Granny and the rest of us than himself. Sending a lot of love your way ❤
Hi Jen. I'm usually more of quiet observer when it comes to TH-cam videos, as in, I don't comment very often. But I just wanted to let you know how much I love your videos (especially the reading vlogs) and how much they mean to me. Every time you announce on IG stories that a new video is going live later I look forward to it and plan when I can watch. I usually map out a chunk of time where I can sit down, relax and enjoy your video with a cup of coffee. It gives me a calm and peaceful break in my days, and boosts my mood when it's not been the best day for me. Thank you very much. I hope you have a great day. 😊 (Also I hope I was able to articulate just how much I am thankful for your videos... English is not my first language and I definitely understand it better than I speak /write it myself 😄)
I am chronically ill and this video is giving my life! I have never heard of this prize and I've spent years trying to find my experience represented and this is so amazing!!
@@jenvcampbell yes, I've participated! I don’t remeber much on chronic pain/fatigue/fibromyalgia but I could have been looking in the wrong places. Thank you for the direction! 🥰
I picked up What Willow Says because of your rec / this video and it was the singular most emotive and life-shifting reading experience I've had in a very long time... thank you for expanding our reading worlds. What you're doing here is essential.
Hi Jen! I love your videos and I have watched them for a long time now. Im from Argentina and it was amazing hearing you talk about Claudia Piñeiros Elena knows. My little brother has a disability and that is why this affected me a lot too. Sending love to you today!
What Willow Says sounds so good! of course.. my library doesn't have it but it sounds beautiful so I may actually just have to buy it. ALSO seeing the picture of jack and pumpkin made my day. I'm a little jealous that I don't ever come in contact with adorable foxes!
@@jenvcampbell oh thank you! I will have to give that a try. I have an enormous list of books that the library doesn't have, so maybe I'll start with just a few, lol!
Brilliant, as always. I showed the children the video of Jack & Pumpkin & we all loved it! My son adores foxes. Such a wonderful list. I bought ill feelings last month on your recommendation, and Josie George's book has been on my wishlist for a while. I'm absolutely seeking out more of these books. Thank you, as ever x
I'm looking forward to reading some of these. I've suggested What Willow Says to my library. Have caught up on a bunch of your videos lately and my want to read list has expanded drastically 😀
Had to put Elena Knows on my tbr right away. I didn’t know about this prize, thank you for making this video! It’s wonderful to see so many chronic illness and disability rep in literature.
I had to laugh, because I added Elena Knows and What Willow Says to my recommendations spreadsheet while watching the video, and then when it got to the end it turned out they were also your top two. 😆 I definitely look forward to reading both of them!
I lost my Dad to a Parkinson's related illness 5 months ago and I both want to read and not read the novel. I completely understand what you said, he was always apologising. Sending you love x
Everyone’s feeling on this will be different but in case it’s helpful to know: whilst I did love the book, I found it very hard to read in places, and it’s been twelve years since my grandpa died, so be kind to yourself. Sending love x
These books sound like they would pair well with Anne Boyer’s “The Undying”, a Pulitzer Prize winning memoir on illness and the author’s own journey with aggressive breast cancer. In it, Boyer discusses the life of the horizontal, and how cancer patients are expected to be “angels of epiphany”, and the many ways in which she rebels against the expected “performance” of cancer. The writing is super smart and unsentimental!
I should also follow up that thought by saying it's not something that people should be expected to put up with - toxic behaviour and unkindness are rubbish, but we should acknowledge that not everyone has a choice/can get away from it.
Wow, Elena Knows sounds a bit like The Unheard! Of course I'm down to the wire with The Unheard as part of your read along (and loving it) so have it on my mind. I realise it's probably only superficially, a woman trying to find out why another woman has died, but you've sold me on it. Although I am a bit way about books translated from Spanish, I don't tend to get along with them as much as other languages. Having said that I've just ordered it. I love seeing Lola out walking.
I think it's a sign of how not like each other they are that when I first read your comment I didn't know what book you were talking about, ha! But I can see how on the surface they could look a bit similar. I hope you enjoy Elena Knows, and I'm really glad you're enjoying the Nicci French readalong, too. x
Great reading blog on so many levels. I loved your premise of reading the long list, choosing your short list and comparing it to the prize’s short list. From your reviews, I ordered two and they ended up being your top two! Why? 1) My uncle came into my care. He had Parkinson’s among other deep disabilities. I miss him and love to remember him! I became his legal guardian for his final years and became so close to him. 2) I’m on a deep journey with trees. All things trees. I’m also struggling alone with the notion that we all need to learn sign. I’m very curious about the practice, guilt, and jealousy with communications in Willow. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing. I hope these two books speak to you as much as they did to me. I would love to be able to sign myself (and I do know how to finger sign) but having ectrodactyly means that it's just full of miscommunication. It's particularly frustrating that many people who have EEC also are d/Deaf, and therefore (like with What Willow Says) many families with EEC have to create their own sign language, signing with the fingers that they have, but then that dialect is obviously not understood by the wider world. xx
@@jenvcampbell Sorry for the delayed response. But you inspired me to download a finger-signing chart, and I started practicing! This seems an easier first step to signing. When I say easy, I don't mean perfect. I have tendon issues in both hands now, so I too can not do all the signs completely. I can't make all the finger letters and numbers, but I'm oddly finding all of them to be great tendon therapy. I've found the best therapy for my tendon stretching is very soft and gentle. Finger signing feels like an extension of my therapy. I didn't know of the common correlation with folx with EEC also experiencing deafness. Every day is full of learning. This video covered so much, but I forgot to mention, my favorite of your fashions was at the beginning of the video. The blond crimp wig with flowered bibbies and black shirt/glasses. Great contrasts! Light and fun.
i got the kindle sample for The Coward and felt like, they chose as winner the book that 'explained being disabled to non-disabled people' not the one that was about being disabled speaking to other disabled people. It's gripping, if anyone's wondering, you'll have no problem reading it, and his father's and mother's lives add that extra, but you can tell that once it gets past the drama and pain it'll be boring
I really enjoy ur long video.THAT FOX IS AMAZING.. TAKE CARE HOPE WINTER IS GOING TO B SHORT.. I FEEL YOUR SADNESS WILL WE EVER UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAS TO B THIS WAY FOR SOME AND NOT FOR OTHERS..ITS A TOUGH GOING..LOVE YA NITE.
These books all sound interesting, but I am really excited to add A Still Life and Elena Knows to my TBR. Also cool to hear your thoughts on Hawkeye. I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see that representation and it ended up being one of my favorite Marvel shows, even though the Hawkeye character has never been my favorite in the past
I’ll be receiving my copy if Ill feelings this week. I see it’s quite low on your list here but I remember you spoke positively about it in another video. Anyway, I’m not sure it’s appropriate to say I’m excited to read about someone’s illness but I’m definitely looking forward to reading it as an interesting work of non fiction.
A Still Life was one of my favourite books last year. Have you read Will Dean's Tuva Moodyson books? I am not sure if I spelled that correctly. They are crime, she is a reporter and she's deaf, the details of the benefits and annoyances of it seem well written to me, as a non-deaf person.

Not everyone is made to be caring. This is such an interesting thought Jen and one that I'll be pondering today. Elena Knows sounds so, so good.
