  • Shannon and Stewart’s baby-centric two-storey home faces a sprawling city park…But after three weeks on the market, they still haven’t received a single offer. Sofie immediately knows what’s wrong…Outside, the verandah is full of junk, and the home’s interior beauty is obscured by oversize furniture, a home office in the dining room, and a tidal wave of baby accessories.
    In order to best showcase the family’s home, Sofie comes up with a $3,800 plan. The couple is willing to get on board from the start…And after a major purge, Anthony and the team get to work on neutralizing the décor, building a bench for the verandah, and creating a designated home office space. Sofie gives Shannon and Stewart a lesson in real estate do’s and don’ts…And urges them to be more flexible in opening their home for viewings.

      My parents house was like that and it was cluttered far worse. After each viewing we did declutter more. But even with our first viewing they were interested. We got it reappraised after we decluttered and did a few improvements. Value bumped up and it sold within 2 weeks.
      We were downsizing and threw out alot of stuff. All my stuff fitted in a small van. The buyers had like 5 huge truck loads. I was surprised they could fit it all in. It was a divorced woman and kids, she was obviously super downsizing.

    I have never understood why people cannot see the house without being distracted with someone else's décor. I fell in love with this house as soon as she did the first walk-through. It was, "I love it! I'd change this and this and this." In fact that is exactly how I felt when I bought my current home. And over the years I have lovingly changed, "this and this and this!" Most of the do-overs to make the homes more "sellable" to me just ruin them. Wrong color paint, wrong furniture, wrong accessories. So it would still be, "I love this house! I'll change this and this and this!" Only now I would be paying someone to change something that I will have to change again. A fixer-upper means you can make it yours, not try to fit into someone else's idea of beauty.

    • @rocketpsyence
      @rocketpsyence 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with this. Every place I've ever gotten I've told the realtor "there is nothing sadder than a house with character that's been HGTVed to death please give me something horrible with wood paneling and outdated linoleum and I'll do the rest". I don't want to pay extra for someone's renovation when I'll be undoing everything they did in the first place.
      My last realtor finally explained to me that most people want to just move in without changing anything though which is why I guess these houses are appealing. But man I do not understand it. Half the fun for me is making it the way I like and doing the projects.

    This show should be called : "how to change a dynamic/vibrant/full of personnality house into a a tasteless-catalog-type-overseen house.".
    I am sure you have to declutter a little, remove some items so that the visitors can feel confortable enough to imagine themselves in the house (and not in your house), but..change the entire master bedroom into this tasteless-blank-grey room ??? They are not selling an hotel. They is their actual house.

    I do like what she did with this house. The end result is very livable and very pleasant. That type of bay window in the dining room and middle bedroom is quite common in houses of that vintage with the house next door so close. The lot is likely no more than 20 feet wide, so not a lot to work with. Off street parking, via the laneway that runs behind these houses on the East side of Shaw Avenue really adds value. There may be space to park two cars back there.

      @colette s Wrong. They never show the rooms they chose not to do. For example, they haven't shown us one bathroom in this house. Perhaps that is the reason it's not selling, but we'll never know. The basement staircase is open to the main level, so that means there's not a shut off/door to the basement. Perfect place for a teenager, or an office, etc. Who knows?

    • @jemts5586
      @jemts5586 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yesiownfrodo My previous house had a staircase down to the basement, but had a landing and door, so the basement was closed off. Maybe there's could be too. But as others have said, this family seems like they have too much stuff. Why waste the space in the basement? I'd have worked on it (bit by bit, if money was an issue) and get more liveable space out of the house.

    • @laceandbits
      @laceandbits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yesiownfrodo Yes, but it's obvious there must be at least one bathroom, and in the same way in some houses they tell us it's four bedrooms but we only see the master one because that's the only one they are going to upgrade.
      At the start this house is described as 2 stories so having a third floor which isn't mentioned at all is weird. Surely the house wouldn't have been built with another staircase going down if there was nothing at all there for it to go down to. If you look at the outside front, there are steps up and the ground floor is well above ground level. This is just like my sister's house with a basement in Canada where the top metre or so is above ground and there are narrow windows at almost ceiling level.

    I feel like some of you are issuing the point of the show. It's not an interior design show where they come in to decorate for president existing family's taste. It's a show about selling houses. A lot of the time buyers don't want to see a house with a bun h of stuff every where. The space shouldn't look too lived in. So by clearing out some of the stuff and having the bare minimum it gives the buyers an idea on what the actual house looks like, which is what they are buying in the first. They are not buying your style ideas but the house so they need better views of the house's dimensions. A buyer comes looks at place based on how they would design it and a lot of that can't be realized with family's existing style pretty much everywhere.

      The thing is, clutter can hide a multitude of sins. I bought a charming cottage 7 years ago and what was beyond the clutter cost a lot of money to correct. I bought it because of the location and generous lot, but I would have negotiated a lot harder about the selling price if I'd known.

    460 THOUSAND dollars?!?!?! WTH? It has zero space between houses, no front yard, almost no back yard, on a fairly busy street. I didn't see much in the way of storage, like closets and such. Is there a basement? What is the condition of that and the attic. What about the heating system, plumbing, the condition of the roof? All these things count when buying a house. The house it's self has some nice features, but jeeze, for that much money, I would want some decent land all the way around the house with a garage.
    Also, 3 weeks is not a very long time for a house to be on the market. Some linger on for years.
    Man, it really pained me to see that guy drill big fat screws right into the wainscoting on the porch! I would have made the benches free standing so as not to destroy the original wood work!
