Hi ! just purchase a RB 13, thinking of getting razer core x, given you a chance to purchase the graphics card again? would you still recommend the RTX 3080? Does it also boost the overall performance and reduce the overall heat from the laptop?
I am not sure if it would reduce the overall heat of the laptop, but it will boost the graphics performance for sure. Right now is definitely not the time to get GPUs though.
I have an NVIDIA A100 that will easily fit in this enclosure. I don't want to play games but use it for AI training. Do you foresee any issues with my Dell Precision 5500 which has Thunderbolt 3 and Windows 10 Pro?
The base model has 8GB RAM soldier. Windows 10 will used at least 5GB to operate, leaving you with only 3GB for other programs. And it can’t be upgrade. So a “Productivity” laptop should have at least 16GB built in. Other than that, a decent gaming PC now require 32GB RAM. So 8GB laptop for about 1,200 dollars is a H3LL NO.
I was considering this exact setup but reading the specs of the core x chroma it says it can support up to 500 watts of power for the card but the 3080 requires 750 watts. Also, isn't there three power 6x2 power plugs on the 3080 card? But the chroma only has two power plugs. Seems this wouldn't work.
No, I think 750w is recommended system power req. Meaning if the PSU has to power the CPU too. Also, the pin amount may vary depending on the model of the card.
Is there any significant differences between TB3 egpu enclosures? I see a variety of prices but... well, I don't have any real desire for fancy RGB or anything. Also as far as the benchmarks, it seems the sweet spot in terms of value with a 30 series card connected over TB3 is the 3060 or possibly 3070. It's the 4x PCIe bottleneck at play, the 3080 and above don't seem to offer significant extra performance due to it.
When I tested two different units side by side (I have a video on this), I didn't see a big performance difference. I would expact 3060 or 3070 to be a sweet spot.
Hi, thanks on this review, i had been watching this couple of times that I almost about to buy the rtx 3080 for chroma. I already have the Chroma, One question if i may, how does the rxt 3080 behave as it is rated 750W while razer x chroma is 700W.?
@@JosephKim Yes, the thunderbolt 3. It was working yesterday but my Razer notebook does not detect it. The chassis fan is working, and the notebook is charging but no detection of graphic card.
@@JosephKim Thanks Joseph. I did and suddenly it works. I may buy another cable which is longer as I believe that the length and tension may be an issue. The thing is totally random as all drivers are up to date and the cable came with the EGPU.
I have a razer core x with a rtx 3080 fe paired to a surface pro 9 & it sure does put out better graphics than my old aurora r12 3070, debating if I should get the chroma version & upgrade the psu, fans & i/o port.
@@JosephKim you could upgrade the psu, just a little fabrication & finding the right parts. I plan on getting the 3090 TI now, I already have the razer core x chroma version 😂. what laptop do you have? Does it have an internal graphics card? If yes, which one? I'm just wondering how much of an increase of performance it was compared to the internal GPU because I have the base Razer Blade with the 2060. @@JosephKim ah, thanks for the quick response! Yeah, having a laptop without a gpu then that makes sense to have the egpu. But good video! Keep em coming!
Thinking about getting this after alienware killed off their AGA. I have an Area 51 R2. Will the eGPU work in conjunction with my internal 2080S(200 Watt) or shut it down and pull only from the external?
It would not work together with the internal card, just pull from the external. Not sure if the overall cost vs. performance makes sense if you already have the laptop with powerful GPU :)
Hello there! I have a Razer Core RC21-0094. I also have an EVGA nvidia 2070 Super gpu. Would this work on my MSI laptop? It does have Thunderbolt 3 support. Just wondering if this will all work together before I break something 😅
I would be very curious how this eGPU setup compares to a high-end gaming laptop, using i9-11980HK/Ryxen 9 5900HX and a mobile RTX 3080. That is normally about 25% slower than a desktop counterpart, but I doubt that the lag of the Thunderbolt cabling will be much less. I am fully aware that my internal CPU is not upgradeable, but I haven't seen such a comparison. I have never used the Benchmarks you use, but I guess I can and compare. I do have a TimeSpy score of ~13000 though, without OC. Sorry about the late post.
No worries! It is a fair point. I just don't have access to similar speced laptops. I do have some recent laptop review that shows the result in comparison. Basically, the native ones are faster.
@@JosephKim Thanks for the reply. I just thought I would try the most easily accessible benchmarks to compare. Thanks. Just got a 3060 and I was worried I’d be losing a ton of performance via egpu. Looks like I have to drop the cash for Razer Core achromatic though…at least I’ll have zRGBs
Haha. I mean, laptops are expensive. If the GPU is the only bottleneck, it's cheaper than buying a new laptop. Although, GPUs are so expensive and hard to get these days.
Hi Joseph! Thanks for the great video. Would like some advice if u have the time. I'm currently on a Razer Blade 15 Advanced with Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10875H. Its a great laptop for gaming and content creation. However, I would like to edit 4k video even more smoothly on my external ultrawide 38-inch LG monitor. Whilst I can do so currently, I was thinking that an eGPU might enhance my setup. My questions are: 1. Given my CPU, how good a GPU could I install in the Razer Core X Chroma such that the CPU doesn't become a bottleneck? My worry is that even if I install the best GPU, my CPU may not be able to harness the potential of the GPU and it might be a waste. 2. I wanted to attach daisy chain a USB Dock to the eGPU to make ports more accessible but of course the Core X only has 1 TB port. What are your thoughts on using the Akitio Node Duo that has 2 TB ports? The only issue with it I find is that it only generates 500W which leads to my last question... 3. What GPU do u think would be suitable for the Node Duo to partner with the Razer Blade 15? I hear that the power generated should account for 2x the power required so I assume I could use a GPU that requires 250W? Appreciate any advice if you have the time :)
The bottleneck of GPU is scaling. Meaning whatever the performance, 90% is what you can utilize. Thunderbolt can be daisy chained, but each port and length will bottleneck in terms of bandwidth. It is unlikely for you to fill up all of that in mormal tasks, but is possible. Yeah, power maybe a problem. I wish they allowed us to swap out the PSU.
@@JosephKim thanks for taking the time! I'm gonna try and go with daisy chaining the node duo with a razer dock chroma for tht ease of access and to keep the thunderbolt cables as short as possible. As for the GPU, I'm gonna use an RTX3060 as it's not so power hungry. I really hope this works and gives that added boost when it's all plugged into to a 38inch ultra wide monitor. 🥲🥲🥲 If it doesn't, I might have to sell the bits for parts hah...
HI Kim, my laptop already came with the RTX A3000 card. im using this setup with a Quadro P5000. how will Windows manage to have both cards running at the same time? i cannot disable the A3000 because it keeps showing up. should i just leave as it is? thank you
@@JosephKim yes, but how do i let the system know? is there a setting or a program i can use to turn off the A3000? because i tried to uninstall the A3000 and next restart, windows keeps reinstall it automatically
because that is your default, you wouldn't be able to completely uninstall it - and A3000 will continue to show. Once you got it working, you can disable it in the device manager, I think.
I use Maya & Arnold , also DaVinci and I was wondering if an eGPU would work here as well . Thing is a new laptop (with last gen tech) with good specs will cost way more than even this razor thing with a RTX 4090 (even though teh pricing is bonkers) and a renderfarm is expensive too when you start rendering teh good stuff ... so if it works it might be a good solution ...if it works
It still is going to be bottlenecked and as it is Thunderbolt 3, I am not sure how much the GPU can leverage/face limits. As I don't have resources to test the latest gen cards, we will have to see ;)
@@JosephKim I understand there will be some bottleneck ... but back in the day I built my own PC's and found bottlenecks were always present and it is more a question of balancing them out ... my question is more how much of a bottleneck and if I can render what I need within a certain timeframe vs using a renderfarm (looking at long term costs, I understand that €1800+ a eGPU box will be a big expense, but certain renders (when using specular and refractions etc) will cost about €1 a frame , my average timerange is 230 frames .... so cost wise it might make sense to make a big expense now ... anyway thanks for answering and if you get a chance to do a new video at some point ... do some tests with Maya & Arnold please ... You will have significant performance gain by running 3060 ti or 3070 ti. But it also sounds like you have a desktop. Why not just put those cards in your machine?
brother a quick question from a noob. I need a egpu with my laptop for external monitors (for work, not gaming). The amount of monitors I will be able to connect uniquely depends from the graphic card I will buy, not on the Razer Core X itself, correct?? thanks
Hi, I’m new to this, so can I basically use this razer x to plug in my gaming hp omen laptop as it has a thunderbolt port and play with the latest graphics card on my laptop?
I was thinking about getting a razer core x and a 4070 super, and seeing its that simple, i am pretty relieved xd my laptop 2050 is good for cs2, but i tried playing ark ascended, and though this game is pretty unpotimized, i only got 30 fps on lowest settings. But i need the portability of my probook, so an egpu makes sense, especially at home where i also have a monitor :)

I would like to purchase a monitor such as lg38wn95c and connect to a regular work laptop (which I do not have control). Main usage would be for multiple windows and programming tasks (but not machine learning (ML) that is GPU intensive)). In the past I had issues connecting a regular Dell I received from work to a 27 inch Dell 2k monitor. Is a eGPU (external) setup combined with the lg38wn95c monitor a solution to guarantee that the setup with a regular laptop will work. On the laptop side, are there any mandatory requirements (at least Thunderbolt 3, Windows OS) or alternatives I should be aware of to be able to manage my setup in case my laptop changes? Any recommendations regarding the GPU . (models) I will not use this setup for any gaming purposes (but might use it in the future for ML).Thank you!
To put it simple, yes the Thunderbolt interface is an absolute requirement. As to the GPU option, it is pretty much whatever you can find without breaking the bank. (it is impossible to get one at reasonable price atm) when you get all set up, it should be a problem connecting different monitors. It is rare that a monitor simply does not work with a laptop though. Try different cables and resolutions.
@@alexpetchesi6968 is there any update regarding this? I am planning on getting the same setup for programming and light gaming. So the same ultrawide LG monitor that supports 144hz, and egpu with maybe a 3070, and my Surface pro 8 that supports thunderbolt 4. One thing I've learned while researching this kind of setup, I don't think you can get the full 144hz of the monitor if you connect to the thunderbolt port at the back of the monitor (USB-C to USB-C). I think you'd need a USB-C to display port to get the full refresh rate.

@@ejkitchen how did it go, Eric? I am thinking about buying egpu for Stable Diffusion and other AI. Not really keen on buying the whole setup. Thx
Would you recommend to get the base model Razer Book 13 and this instead of the $1,600 model?
The base model has 8GB RAM soldier. Windows 10 will used at least 5GB to operate, leaving you with only 3GB for other programs. And it can’t be upgrade. So a “Productivity” laptop should have at least 16GB built in. Other than that, a decent gaming PC now require 32GB RAM. So 8GB laptop for about 1,200 dollars is a H3LL NO.
Nice video. Can you explain why the short cable is better?
Physical length that the data travels introduce more delay/performance reduction.
yes thank for this information , this is just what I needed as grad architect student.
Cool!
I would expact 3060 or 3070 to be a sweet spot.
you take a hit because the desktop mobo has 16x pcie lanes while thunderbolt caps at 4x
Yep
Let’s say money wasn’t an issue and I bought a Razer blade 16 with a 4080. Would it make any sense to get one of those with a desktop 4090 in it?

Thinking about getting this after alienware killed off their AGA. I have an Area 51 R2. Will the eGPU work in conjunction with my internal 2080S(200 Watt) or shut it down and pull only from the external?
It would not work together with the internal card, just pull from the external. Not sure if the overall cost vs. performance makes sense if you already have the laptop with powerful GPU :)

I do have a TimeSpy score of ~13000 though, without OC.

My questions are:
