Hebrews 4: In His Rest Now or Later? - 119 Ministries

  • It is common to hear that we are already in the rest of our Messiah. This doctrine exists to support a theory that we are to no longer literally rest every Sabbath. Do you know where that doctrinal support is found? Have you ever tested that doctrine? You might be surprised to learn when we actually enter that rest.

To the first-century Hebrew Christians, the apostle Paul wrote: “There remains a sabbath resting for the people of God. For the man that has entered into God’s rest has also himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his own. Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest.”-Hebrews 4:9-11. Paul is encouraging us to enter into Gods rest. When Paul wrote this God was still resting.

I have realized more and more that all of the Christian doctrines that argue against the Sabbath and the Law and Obedience have been "come up with" because they don't WANT to keep the commandments or be obedient or more likely, that they are protecting their own traditions...therefore all of these doctrinal theologies that twist scripture to say they don't have to in order to protect their own practices. If they in fact Desired to do these things, keeping commandments, remembering the Sabbath, being obedient, then there would have never been invented ANY of these reasons why not to. Mans religous doctrines to not have to do what the One They SAY they Love has said to do...SAD!

Thank you for this teaching. I believe antisemitism was also a motivator for the development of this and other doctrines in the church. It is said that Martin Luther cursed the Jewish people on his deathbed. Equating the observance of the law with being Jewish rather than with being obedient to YHWH appears to have at least been somewhat of an influence. May a true reformation bring the body of Messiah back to our roots.

      Shalom,
We believe we are saved by grace ONLY through faith in our Messiah. Obedience is not for salvation, but it is evidence of our salvation. As James 2:18 states: I will show you my faith BY MY WORKS
James 2:18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith BY my works.

I should point out that the 10 commandments were of such importance that God himself wrote them, even after Moses broke the first (original) ones God again wouldn’t allow Moses to write them the second time and they are writing on tablets of stone (for all time) and are stored in the ark of the covenant under the mercy seat, this Hebrews 4 teaching is very exciting and worthy of something to look forward to. @@wydopnthrtl this chapter all refers to the age to come, aka the Kingdom, Hebrews 2:5. The writer says that they should be careful to make sure they get to enter this rest. He mentions the land of Canaan rest but then says hey notice David speaks of another rest, so There is still a rest yet to come for God’s people. It also talks about how we already are in this rest, and that we are Sabbathing everyday
But the World to come won’t be here until Jesus returns. Don’t worry, without guidance and a proper knowledgeable teacher Hebrews is long and a doozy of a book. Abused scripture, "The Lord will give you the desires of your heart."

Following the Sunday is actually giving allegiance to the Papacy. A day they boldly claim they had the authority to change. Just as the Bible predicted...the antichrist power would think to change times and law. Sabbath keeping points us to our Creator and Redeemer Christ Jesus while giving testimony of our total trust and reliance on Him and His redemptive work, not anything we can do or offer!

We need to take into account the 12 men that surveyed the land before going into it. Ten of them said they couldn't enter the land bc they couldn't defeat the giants there. But 2 of them had faith that God could defeat the giants and usher them in. The 10 didn't enter in because of unbelief aka disobedience (see Hebrews 4). Nowhere does it say they didn't enter in from disobedience to the law. To imply they didn't enter in because of disobedience to the law is eisegesis. They didn't enter in because of unbelief in God & his power.

Satan and his angels will occupy this barren world and will be the "bottomless pit" he is "chained" to for a thousand years (Rev. 20:1-3) All the righteous dead are resurrected and together with the living, meets Christ in the air and are taken up to heaven where we live for the thousand years you are talking about. Your statement that we are not yet in His rest in denying the Biblical teaching of Jesus when He said: “ Come unto Me …..and I will give you rest”, ……you will find rest for your souls” Matthew 11: 29 His dying on the cross for us, payment for our sentence of death, gives us that rest. We have that rest the minute we believe in His Atonement for our sins. It is like been born again. That gives us the assurance of salvation in Him. You are idolizing the day which was given , not for salvation , but for showing His grace and love for us. I believe that the Sabbath is the commandment from God to keep it by-resting in Him, physically and spiritually and honoring Him as my creator and Savior, but also, I try my best , every day ,to live doing that and not only on Saturday. Why you do not preach every commandment as forcefully as you are doing for the Sabbath. You have also added a lot of assumptions on the Sabbath for the last days which I do not read in the Bible. The Sabbath keeping is not assurance for salvation, only the belief in Jesus gospel is.

Jesus and the apostles were in the temple on the Sabbath and rested on Sunday , the first day of the week . Pentecost , 50 days after the Passover is on Sunday . The day the Holy Spirit filled the people in the upper room. The Catholic church may have mandated Sunday but there were over 250 years between the ascension of Christ and when this was done , maybe even longer. Point is we may be grafted into the vine but I am not a Hebrew. Bible says the gentiles are a law into themselves . Saturday Sabbath does not make you right with Jesus anymore than hail marry's . Jesus did it all on the cross and as far as I am concerned God just wants a day that we humble ourselves .

@@brucecawlfield4909 so you think it's ok to sin, we are automatically forgiven? Let's see what the Son has to say about that.
Read Matthew 7:21-23. It ends with, "I will declare to them, I never knew you, depart from Me you who practice lawlessness.
So what does Scripture say lawlessness is?
      1 John 3:4,
Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
So there must be some kind of law to break or otherwise it's impossible to sin.
Let's see what Yeshua says in Matthew 5:17-18.
Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
Obviously heaven and earth hasn't passed away yet and not all of the prophecies from the prophets have come to pass, some are still in our future. Therefore, clearly the law hasn't changed.
Keeping the law won't justify us to enter the Kingdom of heaven because we have broken the law so our punishment is death. But because of what the Messiah did, we can repent and be forgiven and have a chance at eternal life. This is grace, but grace isn't a permit to break the law (sin).
In Matthew 7:13-14, Yeshua said to enter the narrow gate which leads to life and that it is difficult and few find it. The way to destruction is wide.
Is the way you're taking difficult? Sure sounds pretty easy to me.
You think that you can ignore what the Scriptures say and depend on what God tells you. How can you possibly know that it's not not satan? If you knew the truth, you can spot a lie and you will know it's not the Father. Don't underestimate satan.

The rest is in the thousand year reign of Yeshua. It’s what this whole life is about. In the garden, when sin entered mankind, via Adam and Eve, Yahweh wanted to reconcile or atone for this breach. The seed of the serpent is sin in the flesh, which Yeshua destroyed the CONSEQUENCES of in his death.
    Hebrews 2:14
“14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil”
His death did just that, it destroyed the POWER of death, the diabolos, on the cross.
The diabolos is sin in the flesh Paul says “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” That flesh is the diabolos, which Adam with his law breaking, left death as a consequence.
We don’t serve the seed of the serpent, we serve the seed of the woman. The wages of sin is death, not eternal burning, for ANYTHING. The devil or diabolos was destroyed at the cross, it’s not saved for the end of the thousand years. I hope this generated some research and thought.

According to some sources, Christians held corporate worship on Sunday in the 1st century. An early example of Christians meeting together on a Sunday for the purpose of "breaking bread" and preaching is cited in the New Testament book of Acts (Acts 20:7). Early Christians largely continued to pray and rest on the seventh day but soon also observed Sunday, the day of the week on which Jesus had risen from the dead and on which the Holy Spirit had come to the apostles. ... A Church Father, Eusebius, stated that for Christians, "the sabbath had been transferred to Sunday".

Acts 20:7 is "Motza’ei-Shabbat" and Paul was to be traveling the next day. They were gathered just at the close of Sabbath and Paul was to be traveling on Sunday after sunup. Both of those are in perfect harmony w/Sabbath keeping.

Is this seventh day Adventist teaching??

    • @geraldhill7547

      It's non-Catholic Christian teaching.
Many protestant traditions came from Constantine's Catholic Church.

My question was is this seventh day Adventist teaching? I wasn’t asking if it was catholic doctrine. Thanks

Nope. It is biblical from the early church before 300AD. Closest denomination would be messianic Jewish teaching.

This study is all over the place and incredibly erroneous.
Rest is in Jesus, the simplicity of Christ and his work on the cross.
This study completely undermines this and wants us to step back into the foreshadow of Christ and his work. Isaiah 66:23 is a vague reference and can no way be used to claim perpetual Sabbath's as Revelation 21:22 makes clear that within the New Kingdom, there will be no sun or moon. The referenced verses of Roman's 11 and Eph 2:11 also make no sense as evidence for gentiles keeping Sabbath. Isaiah 56 is speaking to Jews at that time and refers to the old covenant.
I was once swayed by this Hebrew roots style theology, but praise the Lord that my eyes have been opened to the simplicity of the gospel and the glorious work of Christ our saviour, who fulfilled the law and the prophets..Amen

Isaiah 66:22-24 has not been fulfilled yet; therefore, all has not been fulfilled yet according to Matthew 5:17-18. Since everything has not been fulfilled yet, the law is still here.

JESUS IS LORD OF THE SABBATH
    MARK 2
27 AND HE SAID TO THEM, “THE SABBATH WAS MADE FOR MAN, NOT MAN FOR THE SABBATH.
28 SO THE SON OF MAN IS LORD EVEN OF THE SABBATH.”
YES! INDEED MAN WAS NOT CREATED FOR THE SABBATH, BUT THE SABBATH WAS CREATED FOR THE SOUL TO WORSHIP THE FATHER IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH.
LET THE EGO HAVE ITS WEEKLY SABBATH; BUT THE ORIGINAL PURPSE OF THE SABBATH HAS SET THE SOUL FREE - SO IT CAN WORSHIP THE FATHER IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH SPONTANEOUSLY - ANY DAY - ANY TIME IN PRAYER PRAISE OR WORSHIP NOT WITH SHOW BUT WITH SINCERITY AND TRUTH AS INDEED YESHUAH TOLD US TO AND TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL AND AIDING THE FRAIL ARE SABBATH ACTS OF LOVE FOR JESUS. ISAIAH 61
1 the spirit of the sovereign lord is upon me, because the lord has chosen[a] me.
he has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help[e] the broken-hearted,
TO DECREE THE RELEASE OF CAPTIVES, AND THE FREEING OF PRISONERS,
{FOR JESUS SAID, WHEN YOU HELP OTHERS - YOU HAVE HELPED ME PERSONALLY.
    JESUS SAID DON’T LET YOU LEFT HAND [EGO] KNOW WHAT YOUR RIGHT HAND [SPIRIT - SOUL] IS DOING.}
YES! YESHUA HAS ST US FREE OF THE CLUTCHES OF THE FLESHLY EGO FORTHOSE WHO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE AN EGO AT LEAST.
MATTHEW 6 3 BUT WHEN YOU GIVE TO THE NEEDY, DO NOT LET YOUR LEFT HAND KNOW WHAT YOUR RIGHT HAND IS DOING,MEANING, IF THERE IS HESITATION IN WHAT YOU GIVE OR DO, THEN THE EGO IS INVOLVED IN THE DECISION AND MAY WELL BLOCK IT; AS INDEED WHAT HAPPENED TO “CANE”
    MATTHEW 6
6 "BUT YOU, WHEN YOU PRAY, GO INTO YOUR INNER ROOM, CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND PRAY TO YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN SECRET, AND YOUR FATHER WHO SEES WHAT IS DONE IN SECRET WILL REWARD YOU.
IT IS A SABBATH, WHEN YOU ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD BE IT IN PRAYER, PRAISING OR WORSHIPING THE LORD, OR SHARING THE GOSPEL.
YESHUAH SAID - MY FATHER HAS BEEN WORKING UNTIL NOW AND I TO AM WORKING. [YES ON THE EARTHLY SABBATHS CREATED FOR MA..]
THNK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS; THEY ARE INSPIRING AND CERTAINLY; FOOD FOR THOUGHT AS I HOPE MY COMMENTS ARE.
GOD BLESS YOU AND PEACE BE TO YOU ALL IN JESAUS THE CHRIST - YESHUA HAMNASHIACH.

All the controversy is a waste
There are more than 10 moral laws
The nature of a law is not determined by what it is written on
The 2 Best : LOVE GOD + LOVE OTHERS are not on stone
    Holy days are over
    One Lord and One faith
Over with all this ceremonial hooplah
It is a lack of obedience of faith
And since faith works by love, it is a lack of love to the Person Who is Rest 100%!
It is leaven, pride, ego, delusion and distraction
It is of the flesh and a doctrine of demons 100%!
Love the Lord and others in the Holy Ghost from Heaven
1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

This verse was one of the ones that forced me to look into the laws more. I kept reading and yearning for God outside of church and it led me to Torah. I was like "wow this is so cool but sad that all these people think he's Torah is abolished." I'm glad to have my eyes opened
