The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Patty Duke had a Top 10 hit in 1965 with "Don't Just Stand There" and another Top 40 hit with "Say Something Funny" later that same year. Two other singles charted on the Hot 100, but this was the extent of her national chart career. She was much more famous as an actress in movies and television. I believe this was her only appearance on the Sullivan show. She sang both sides of her current single which failed to chart. "And We Were Strangers" was the A-side while "Dona, Dona" was the B-side. Her performance of the latter has been shown in syndicated Best of Sullivan episodes, but this is the first time that the footage of the other song has been re-released.
She first performed as a singer on Shindig, Don't just stand there was a great single as was Say Something funny!

I like how her natural beauty was not heavily altered by makeup. Today all of the natural hollows and shading would be covered completely with concealer and she would have the doll-like appearance that female celebs have today.
Patti is not a singer but it is clear this song was tailored to her voice and she was taught how to sing it well. Autotune has eliminated this practice.

She sounds fine here, someone wisely told her to sing softly.....this could have been a Hit for her, she had already had hit records in the Teen World and this could have been more of an adult contemporary record for her - United Artists records didn't push her efforts.
