I had years of not being able to physically tolerate alcohol, and subsequently often choose not to. Telling people I can't, I git no hassle, telling people I didn't want ro, so often resulted in people trying to strong arm me into drinking. Drinkers in the U.K. are not good at respecting choice not to drink - particularly in Glasgow, it was never easy.

The peer pressure can be overwhelming at times. And you don't want to be the gooseberry, its hard sometimes.
@DJWESG1 that's not with Gooseburry means in that context, though I agree, you have to be individualistic to withstand the peer pressure. Isn't it horrible, that there is peer pressure in regard to alcohol? It wouldn't be accepted in regard to cigarettes.

Telling people you're doing dry January is necessary. I live in CZ - the drinking culture is even more prevalent. My job is a musician, in bars and restaurants. Firstly I get offered a beer as walk in to a pub (where I'm working). After having sparkling water, I don't need to say "dry January" they know it. My main problem is with Brits I get tips from other customers. British people do not tip, they "buy you a drink".

I gave up booze a few years ago, I did drink too much although I was never ever dependent, I just dont enjoy it anymore, I bought a bottle of wine for Xmas and drank coca cola all day, I do enjoy some "wacky baccy" which is effectively decriminalized and completely legal if you have the money to see a "weed doctor" in the UK

Extremely poor taste guys. Piper Alpha happened purely because there were no safety processes in place then. The Trade Union for Oil and Gas workers was formed.
