Eric! :) You probably don't remember me b/c your channel, like all of them, get lost in the pile. I was the kid who used the fact that he was a "white boy" as a reason why I could never really play the blues, but still use blues to play classic punk, and 60's brit-invasion (white-boy music LOL). Well, you discouraged that notion, outright and even sent me a couple of links to help me out on the day I subscribed.
Since I last commented I started taking lessons after 20 years of playing (semi-pro) with terrible habits. Even the local guitar jocks are talking behind my back about how good I'm getting. Anyway, I demanded to learn this song from my teacher. I knew this was a job for EricBlackmon if I needed some visual aid. Turns out we're playing the exact same staff sheet!
This is a really important stepping stone for me. When you listen to the CHESS recording his playing is a little more lively, so I wonder if they made Chuck lay this chart down as a "dummy" for him to go wild over on the official track. This is the kind of song you start to discover your "fingerprint", but before I get creative my teacher is making me learn this same staff and tab to the note under the guidance of the dreadful metronome.
I'm not going to cheat and abandon the metronome for your video, but this will help me out with some of the more awkward timing examples. Whether you remember me, or not you're a very nice guy, so I thought I'd say hello, just the same.
Everyone plays this song different, so I really appreciate you laying down the foundation of this song before I get to start playing with elements of my own. Thank's for the great work Eric. Seems all I can do is write, and play music so I'm hoping to go pro, in time. Can't do anything else, but why would I want to - LOL :).
Hi Terry! You are right! I chat with so many viewers here on TH-cam that it is hard to remember someone if you don't connect at least every now and then! Glad that guitar is working out for you! Please let me give you a tip. When trying to learn a style like this, listen to it over and over again until you can hear the musical movement in your head even when you are not playing. This will help your "feel" for blues and similar music! Always try to hear something you did not hear before, then try to duplicate it one guitar. The more time that you spend playing this way, the easier it will become for you. Thank's Eric! Actually when I started off learning the tab I was distracted by all the thing's I wasn't hearing in my playing. Listening to first 10 seconds was pretty humbling at first, but I started trying to incorporate the stuff I was hearing in my head.
My teacher dug what I was doing, but asked how well I would play it on-stage. I had to admit, "choking' was a high-risk with some of the stuff I was trying to do. So we backed up the bus, and you know the rest.
I love your 60's song link. They're a huge distraction for the task at hand, but when I get to hit them at least I know I'll be learning them PROPERLY.
You're one of my fave teacher's on YT. I really appreciate how you actually slow it down to a proper learning speed. Every song is hard the first time you try to learn it.
