    I know how to place a document, to click options, etc. My problem is that when I place a Word document that has something italicized or superscripted, all the text after that becomes italicized or superscripted. How do I make InDesign place my Word document without doing that?

    Hello! I'm wondering if it will change the text if you edit the word document, the same way a linked photo might update? Thanks

      YES! But, you have to select the “Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files” checkbox in the File Handling pane of the Preferences dialog box first! Thanks for the good question :)

    Thank you. that is great information. can you inform me how to import large tables in word document? The problem I have is when I try to import multi page tables tables the row break up, meaning if the row is large and can not fit at the bottom of the table the whole row moves to the next page. So there is a large space left empty at the bottom of the page and the table is ugly.

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... this may be a situation where I need to see the files in order to best advise, but in general I would try a 'keep with next' solution in the import OR if it's manageable for you, you could reset the table completely in InDesign. It's tedious, but that's how you can can have complete control and really customize the look. Believe it or not, sometimes it's easier to create something from scratch one time and modify it to suit your needs vs. messing around with something that won't allow you to fully do what you want!

      I read on the internet that there is a java script that solves this problem. It is called Tables Sized to Frame.jsx. i dont know where to find it though. i found one on the internet but it doesnot function.

    Hello Graphics grrrr! I love your videos. So so helpful. I have a question I've not yet been able to find an answer for. I have a large book I am designing that I've imported from a Word doc (keeping all the original formatting). I want to go and find all of the words that are italicized throughout the book so I can apply a character style to all at once. Is there a way to do this? I have to change all of the body text paragraph styles to my own and if I do that, I will lose the italics. TIA!

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hellooo, Angie! Thank you for the kind words. You can preserve the formatting. InDesign provides some options for retaining the formatting of text when you choose File > Place. In the Place dialog box, select the Word document that you want to place, then enable the Show Import Options checkbox and click Open. Hope this helps! Please subscribe and watch my whole InDesign playlist if you can- that will really help my channel. 🙏

    this is very helpful!! I have a question about inserting text. How is it possible to insert it and make it follow different master pages text boxes in a continuos way. I mean if I have master a, b and c and in my document and I alternate those randomly to create different styles. I have tried to apply it by clicking with shift in the first box but it only responds to all the same master pages and not in the order of the document so it jumps pages. Hope I am clear with the question and that you can help me out with this. Thanks in advance

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hellooo, Alejandro! If I understand your question correctly, you would simply import the text and then apply different master page styles to the pages.

    • @alejandrovidal2463
      @alejandrovidal2463 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@graphicsgrrrl Hi!! but if I apply master pages styles to the text after importing it, it doesn't follow the text boxes of the master pages, it shows on top of the design that the master pages have. I apply master pages to pages from the "PAGES" floating menu, don't know if there is another technique to import the text and make it go all the way through the different text boxes

    How do you predict what font sizes were used on scanned images.
    To match work as close as possible

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not really a prediction as much as a check, I can guess pt size pretty accurately now but I always verify by typing a word in the passage, put it in like magenta or neon green and overlay it on top of placed art or type next to it. On top is best so you can also check spacing. 👍🏽

    What is the best option import the text from Word or type it directly in indesign 🤔 Thanks

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While you can import text from Word with File / Place, I find it add a lot of extra formatting- especially if it uses Word formatting vs the font (i.e., bold or italic vs the oblique font), so I would recommend copying and pasting from Word and then go into InDesign and paste. Then you can just format as needed with less gobblygook!

    What if I have a .doc with several pages?

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to import it all! Perhaps make many linked text boxes in InDesign before you import-- it will flow into all for you to format!

    • @Underhills
      @Underhills 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@graphicsgrrrl The tables and layout formatting from the imported doc file collapses. Doesn't work.

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Underhills So you have a text box and have gone to File / Place and navigated to the Word doc you want and then InDesign quits? I'm not sure what you mean by collapse. How about try this: open Word, select All and copy and then go into your InDesign file, create a text box and paste. I'm thinking your Word doc must be complex with tables, etc. so try this with just a small amount of text if it doesn't work with all.

    • @Underhills
      @Underhills 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@graphicsgrrrl Nothing works cause the doc files gets formatted when placed. All the tables and layout collapses.

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Underhills Ah, okay, by "collapse" you mean it doesn't maintain your tables. To keep this formatting:
      1. Choose File > Place.
      2. In the Place dialog box, navigate to the document.
      3. Check Show Import Options.
      4. Click Open. The Microsoft Word Import Options dialog box opens. Make sure "Preserve Formatting from Text and Tables" is selected in the Formatting area in the Microsoft Word Import Options dialog box.
      Let me know if that solves it for you. Many designers prefer to reformat tables in InDesign to make them look prettier.
