Best Lawn Advice I've Ever Gotten!
I applied the Empero Sedgehammer exactly as the video described, including the surfactant and dye. What a great success! None of the grass was affected but the Nutsedge stopped growing immediately. After a week it was yellow. After 2 weeks it was brown and drying up. I guess it was because of the dye - but I did not miss a spot of Nutsedge on the entire acre of grass I treated.
Thank you for creating this helpful video!

We talked with a local nursery as it is rampant in our retaining wall planter. They said just leave it and mow it. So we did - it’s great cover and we don’t have to fight what wants to live there. And yes, nature handles the rest.

Spectricide makes a product sold at Lowes called Weed Stop that kills over 200 types of weeds, including nut sedge, without harming your lawn. I have used it with excellent results, and it will not break the bank - very reasonably priced.

The Ortho product is also available in a ready to use spray bottle. I buy several of those and dump them into a pump sprayer. In 20 years I haven’t had any damaged grass and it works fast.
The bigger challenge for me is timing the application with mowing, timed watering, and rain. Remember, these products all depend on absorption through the leaves, so if you apply right after mowing they might be ineffective.

You can get the Ortho in a spray bottle (like Windex) for small spots. Much easier to target just the weed, and I haven't noticed any damage to surrounding turf. Obviously if you have a lot, one of these is better. But for subsequent years, or if you only have one or two small spots of it, just having it on hand is an amazing tool.

Sledgehammer has another advantage…it can be added to other herbicides in the same sprayer. You can add it to 2,4-D amine for broadleaf weeds, quinclorac for grassy weeds like crabgrass, and even to Tenacity, which is an all-around herbicide. One small bottle of Sedgehammer can last a few seasons.

For the ultimate feeling of satisfaction, I go the extra mile, or inches anyway. I use a cheap water jet nozzle, like 1/4 inch. It doesn't have to be a powerful jet, just enough to blast the dirt away. I grab the stem with one hand and shoot the water jet down with the other along the stem and down to the nut and root ball. They vary in depth, some a 1 to 2 inches deep, but others are 4 to 5. It's easy to follow the stem down with your fingers and pluck them out with the nut and roots. Most of the dirt will just settle back into the hole, it may need a little help. But usually there are 4 or 5 plants in a group so just get all of them then just spray the dirt back but it mostly levels itself.
It's a little messy but very satisfying knowing you got that sucker nut and all. You don't need a powerful stream, it's just slower but neater.

I find that if you just have a few it’s better to just pull them up versus spraying chemicals. When it gets hot out and dry most all of the chemicals I’ve tried burned the grass and might even kill it. Seed won’t normally won’t take until the fall so you create a dead spot and even more weeds will come up.

I find most fast-kill herbicides don't provide long-term control, or at least as long as you get with slow-kill products. Consumer broad-spectrum killers like Roundup, which contain glyphosate, don't seem to last nearly as long as commercial glyphosate concentrate, same as the consumer level broadleaf sprays don't seem to last as long as commercial products. I'd rather pay more and get longer control than to see immediate but short-term results.

Again once you cut the nutsedge after spraying it didn't grow aggressively as before...so I actually prefer the slower death as the lawn looks better if that makes sense
