no disrespect but you’re a totally irresponsible to recommend a carcinogen such as Monsanto's Round up, a guy just won a case in the US due to getting CANCER from spraying this poison, whats next you recommending Agent Orange or DDT. recommending this to people for use in their garden where they, Children or pets may come onto contact with this poison is crazy., also round up stays in the soil for decades, and has a detrimental effect on other plants, microbes and insects. The article also shows how nearby use of Roundup affects farmers not using the “Roundup Ready” system of growing GMO crops coupled with the spraying of glyphosate. One farmer describes how he loses corn every time his neighbor sprays Roundup and the herbicide drifts onto his conventionally grown corn. Worse, his neighbor’s fields have become so compacted that every time it rains, Roundup-laden runoff floods his conventional crops. “ANYTHING YOU PUT ON THE LAND AFFECTS THE CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY OF THE LAND, AND THAT’S A POWERFUL PESTICIDE,” the farmer is quoted as saying www.planetnatural.com/roundup-killing-soil/
Don't you know Round Up only causes cancer in California. And that guy is from the bay area... But did you read the story, he literally bathed and inhaled Round Up.
I recently moved back to my home & I am fighting Numerous Crab grass weeds & others. I've tried numerous diff items. Well I'm 68 years old and this is The Best Crabgrass education I've ever viewed!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge about "identification" of different type of grasses and weeds.
After 5 to 6 years of trying to combat crabgrass and not having a healthy lawn until this year I still have crab grass I bought Gordon’s crabgrass killer from Ace Hardware and mixed it half an ounce more than what I called for put in 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish detergent may be a little bit more and the crabgrass after I cut it down to the grass to 2 inches tall to really cut the heads off I sprayed the crabgrass it was dead in 2 to 3 days. It did not hurt my tall fescue. Subscribed
This is exactly what happens when you grow up... they lied to us!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 It’s nothing like we imagined 😂 here we are YouTubing GRASS 😞 so disappointing 😭
This is one of the best videos I have seen so far on weed control. Crisp and clear and very informative. I would recommend everyone should watch this video and learn to identify the different grass types and how to control them. Well done!!.
Really informative and well spoken on crabgrass! My lawn is 70% crabgrass, 5% clover, 10% bare from dead weeds I killed with weed-be-gone and it barely freezes in Dallas, Tx but it is now in the 90's with tons of bugs and a disabled single lady like me can hardly get outside in this climate
I live in central Maryland in a 67 yo house with Zoysia which is continuous across the 5 acre plot land between two streets in our neighbor hood. The whole neighbor hood is essentially all Zoysia. Most lots, like mine , are .5 acres. The only lawns with different types of grass are across the street on the 5 acre plot of land those houses are on. I have some serious crabgrass I want to get rid of and am looking for ways to clear that up. It gets direct sunlight year round, goes dormant in the winter as well as in the summer when we have drought conditions. Zoysia is some tough grass.
Now I know what I dug up! Luckily, it's outside my fence in the city's right of way. But I didn't want it coming into my yard. So....I dug most of them up, have a few more to go. As you said, I had to dig deep! Left some pretty good size holes. But I'm not replacing the dirt. I'm sure the grass will now start growing over the holes. St Augustine can grow really thick. That's what I'm counting on. Anyway, thank you for a great, informative video without unnecessary chatter!! I stayed with you till the end. And thanks again!!! 👍🏻
Damn, finally someone who knows what he's talking about when it comes to crabgrass. Unofrtunately, my lawn has been overwhelmed and I'm having to kill it and reseed. but now I'll know how to take care of it moving forward!
This video has convinced me (your knowledge of lawns and grass)... I need to abandon the idea of controlling the weeds in my lawn... (South Louisiana)work and make more money, find a local guy with your level of expertise, and pay him to take care of my lawn... last time I hired a company... they sprayed a few times a year... my lawn looked pretty much the same... wrong company...the next guy will have to be able to show and talk the level of knowledge you have, thx
Hi William. just remember it all starts with water. If you focus on the watering you can get some solid results out of most lawn companies assuming they put the products down correctly.
Pest and Lawn Ginja, we just purchased a home and the lawn is infested with what looks to be crab grass and I was searching for ways to get it under control. Dude, I learned a TON just watching this video! Thanks and I'm subscribing.
Carlton! Love that you were able to take the info and run with it. Makes me happy. That was the whole reason for me showing up to youtube. I wanted to create good content that would allow people like you to watch and do the doing!
I needed this! Looks like my yard right now (Georgia)! I am a new homeowner and by the second summer all these different grasses popped up. Thank you for explaining. Great tutorial!
Great information here. Well done. I'm looking to control weeds, aerate a lot, and seed. I know premergents to control weeds will prevent new growth .. So, in the spring I'd like to hit the lawn with the premergent with oil. In Sept. I'd aerate and seed. Water and watch the grass grow. Does that sound like a solid plan. I'd want that lawn that his so lush it'll prevent weed growth. Now, its not the greatest - at all.
I'm learning about crab Grass in this And this video really did help me control and get rid of a lot of weeds especially crabgrass which destroyed my Lawn. I enjoy his videos in their very educational also Very well explained thank you and I will do as recommended appreciate you to for having channels like this period enjoy guys
Good grief. I learned more about these weeds and products than I ever have. Tough to catch all of it, but I'll go back and take notes. Great job and you seem extremely knowledgeable! Well done brother!
@@pestandlawnginja Your other video says you can use quin and seed oil on bermuda but this video has a text pop saying dont for crabgrass. Now im more confused.
First time home owner here. After doing days of research, this whole lawn care game is wildly confusing and overwhelming. Came looking for answers and again left feeling even more confused/overwhelmed. rip my yard.
Once u start doing it, it will become intuitive and simple. Thats because u try to learn everything but never actually try it yet. Its like u try to learn how to swim or drive a car just by reading or watching yt video. It meant to help u in ur learning, but just doing that isnt gonna get u anywhere. U need to actually start doing it. And of course, mistake will be make, rip to ur lawn but u will get better each time
@@prumchhangsreng979 Thank you for the perspective check. Since I made this comment 2 weeks ago I have already made mistakes. The house I bought had a lawn that had not been taken care of in years so its just completely and totally overrun with weeds. This yard has become a baptism by fire as a first time home owner.
@@bloodybones63 and did u learn how to swim in the air? When I say do it, it mean do it with precaution, if it sth dangerous, do it under expert supervision. I can totally see that accident at backdoor gardening gonna create a blackhole. Lmao, the worst that can happen is u kill ur grass and waste those money, but would u call it a waste if u actually learn things along the way faster than just watching a video without any practice at all? Stop going around spitting bullshit mate
Great video, I have heard over the years having a thick, healthy lawn will prevent a lot weeds coming up. It's like the opposite, less grass the weeds will choke out the grass, more grass, the grass will choke out the weeds.🤔🤔🤔. Thanks
Good information. Where I am, in zone 7B, tall fescue is one of the good guys. Other options are Bermuda or centipede (gardeners hate because it’s the worst weed they battle), zoysia or St Augustine. I hate glyphosate. I kill crabgrass with baking soda! It also works on certain weeds with a flat rosette and deep taproot.
Great video! For my St. Augustine lawn, I had an invasion of crab grass in my backyard. I grows all over the neighborhood. One method you did not mention: I ripped out all the crab grass by hand, end of last summer. I seeded some new grass on top, Bermuda. It grew well into fall while the St. Augustine shuts already down. This year, the St. Augustine overgrew the Bermuda grass. Really good success displacing the crab grass. Because it grows horizontally it is really easy to grab and pull out. Ok, I had a few blister, I admit! 👍🏻😀
Very Knowledgeable video and channel... Open my eyes to issues that I couldn't understand regarding my lawn; thank you. I have a serious undesirable grass/weed/crabgrass problem at my home and I made the decision to Dig the whole lawn up and re-apply soil and go with new SOD. I deal with a Local Landscaper and He cuts several properties on my block / neighborhood. My question is am I wasting my money by going with new SOD and letting the Landscaper cut my lawn because the other lawns he cuts have similar bad crabgrass issues ? Thanks
Great question James. Few thoughts come to mind. The main issue is keeping your lawn healthy and happy. Second of all Identify your grass type. What we want to know is if you have a rhizomatous grass or not. If you're not sure go to a local nursery and have them identify your grass type. The name of the game is keeping the grass thick. If you don't have a rhizomatous grass type you may need to overseed annually or semi annually to keep the grass thick. Thickening up the grass will naturally help push weeds out. It will also help keep the microbes happy and healthy. You have to have to dial in the sprinklers. If pre emergents dry out for too long they lose there capabilities. The pre emergents have to be put down at the right times. Buy yourself a meet thermometer and measure the ground temps. I put my pre emergents down when ground temps hover around at 50 degrees F. If you follow these steps you'll be fine. First and foremost keep the grass thick.
I live in South Florida with a St. Augustine lawn. The cheapest method I found to get rid of Crab Grass is baking soda. I mix one pound of baking soda to one gallon of water in a Roundup sprayer. Mix it for a minute, it is very water soluble. I then add one tablespoon of liquid dish washing soap which allows the mixture better coverage on the leaf surface. Spray it on the grass in the morning. It may take several treatments but really works and does not harm the St. Augustine or any pets or wildlife. Each gallon costs less than $1.00.
Dam I never realized how many different kinds of grass there is. Geez trying to learn all of the things to do to a lawn is like having another full time job. 😳
Very good analysis of various grass types. Be aware that Roundup has been declared cancerous in several court cases. As far as crabgrass goes, you might mention that it is an annual grass that drops seeds in the fall and then dies. In the spring, those seeds germinate forming new crabgrass plants. Without using any chemicals, I spent 2 whole days pulling up mature crabgrass plants using a special forked hand tool that extracted the plants easily. Lot of work, but the yard is now almost completely free of crabgrass. Another point: if you use a pre-emergent to prevent those seeds from germinating, you may not be able to plant healthy perennial seed at the same time.
I have spent so much time digging up tall fescue. Almost got it all gone now. Tip to the wise when seeding you lawn initially spend the extra money for quality ryes, fescues and blue grasses
I was once told by a man that had worked 40 years for the park service that the best grass in the park was crab grass because it would tolerate so much foot traffic and was stronger than other grasses. Perhaps we should be happy with something that will last.
I work in the spring industry here in Florida. Crabgrass is a big problem of course but we try to put down a pre-emergent during the winter time and we been putting one down during the summertime. We actually for an added fee of like $100-$200 we put down spectacle which in the spring time helps against a lot of broadleaf weed’s including crabgrass. So a lot of what he says is pretty much spot on. Only we don’t have Bluegrass but we deal with Saint Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoyza a lot.
Very cool. I don't deal much with nutsedge or some of the other common annual grasses you would. Pretty cool of you to bring those up. Spectacle is an herbicide I haven't had the pleasure of using due to the target weeds not being present in my area to make it worth the purchase. Glad to hear it's working well for you.
Great video. One grass/weed that is prevalent in my neighborhood (St. Louis area), and not controlled or correctly identified by any of our lawn service companies is Fountain Grass. It will show up in your lawn and will look as though your lawn mower blade needs sharpening. It can be very unsightly. It sprouted from your neighbors ornamental Fountain Grass. Quinclorac will control it. However, very few know what it is or how to control it. It can be very invasive.
I see it in multiple lawns in my neighborhood. When I talk with the landscaping guys they don't know what it is. Here is more info. Is spreads from the ornamental and is perrenial. purdueturftips.blogspot.com/2013/06/junes-weed-of-month-is-fountain-grass.html
I'm guessing you live on the Wasatch because you nailed every type of grass I have been struggling with (and the mountains in the background) Thank you for the highly knowledgeable explanation. I guess I'll be digging because I got tall fescue not crab grass.
A few weeks back I edged along the driveway and sidewalk, now I have crabgrass growing everywhere I edged at. It's been a few years since I had a crabgrass problem. And now it's starting the grow in the center away from where I edged. I usually pull it out by hand, but there's a lot of it this year. I also always have a problem with that creeping vine, that gets little flowers on it, and turns a red purple color in the fall. It spreads out from a central source, looks like an upside down root system when you pull it out.
I think that creeping vine is chick weed. Its hell to get rid of, because even if you pull it up any part that falls on the ground will regrow anew. I have it in my gravel driveway and here and there in the yard. I use a vegatation killer on the drive that is supposed to last a year. Well, I have applied it 4 times this summer.
Great information. I am dealing with crab grass right now. I used BioAdvance All-In-One Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer Ready-To-Spray. Didn't do much, now I am digging up and treating some with vinegar.
Hey! Thanks for doing this. It's very informative. I've been studying weeds and lawn issues and how to identify which is which. And finally I found your video. It's made identifying them now a little easier. More than i knew 5mins ago despite working on thus for 2weeks. Images I've looked at are useful BUT you actually got down and really zoomed in on video to record it and I've found this much more helpful than images or other videos where they talk and talk but never get down in the soil which I think is a must in really helping a novice like myself. I'm gonna pop out now and get down in the soil and look at them to compare and hopefully finally identify! Thing is, I think I've prob got the majority of all you showed! How does this happen? My lawn was awesome last year after loads of work. But the UK winter just passed gave moss and boom all these cheeky weeds. Can't fathom what went wrong after years of no issues other than low grade grass and soil which I improved and it looked gorgeous. Anyway cheers....gonna go look now!! 👍
Late to the show as always. This year I just started to really dive into lawn care. I have been trying to identify Johnson grass for a while now and I wasn’t able to get any definitive evidence stating the distinct characteristics of the stem like you did. As soon as you plucked that piece I knew right away what I was dealing with. Thank you!!!
Finally a video on this that's in Utah! My neighborhood has more of the tall fescues but my direct neighbor had the Crabgrass. And it's currently turning purple (thanks Trimec). Hey, can you do a video on the thistle types in Utah? Mainly the type that get the purple flowers?
Hi Court welcome! Thanks for watching and the comment. I'd be happy to do a video on thistle. It may take me a while to find multiple species. But the control methods are all the same for thistle. I'll put it on the list. Thanks for the idea.
Thanks for the comment. Great question. I'm part of a local service company. Here is my brief answer. If you can find a company that incorporates Macro and Micro nutrients that your local area needs there is a ton of benefits. Most granular formulations do not contain micro nutrients. Think of macro nutrients as a whole wheat pasta and micro nutrients as your fruits and vegetables for your own body. The macros stimulate growth and the micros provide nutrients to build and fortify overall health and better root growth. The micros are expensive to put into the mix and that's why its not common for companies to include them in there mix. If you ask the right questions you can find the right company for what you want. Most inexpensive lawn spray companies use micro nutrients only and that's what the cheap price gets you. Overtime the lawn uses up the available nutrients and stops giving you the great results you once had and using the macro's only stops working. Hope that helps.
Love your videos. Finally got a house with a yard and I have been learning and embracing the suck. Its a rental and they said they will discount us on rent for what ever we do to improve they property. Your videos help. Its nice for when we own next year. Keep up the good work.
I am on the downhill side of my weed hoarder neighbor. I have used everything including fire, yes I burned my front yard down. Nope, didn't work. I currently have two silt fences up and about 4 gallons of roudup on the ground...I'm at the point of building a step up in my yard with railroad ties to stop the water flow weed supply from next door...
You and me both Jason!!!! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I was frustrated for years with all the misinformation I was given. Figured it was time to help others now that I've got a handle on it.
Around here we get dallisgrass, and it is a huge pain in the grass! Comes back every year and spreads like kudzu, it will take over a lawn. It grows so quickly, in the peak growing season the seed pods will stick up a foot or more in 4 to 5 days.
I don't know what state you're from, but I sure wish you were in Utah! You are by far the most knowledgeable person in your field that I have found on the web. All I can say is, keep making videos!!! You are awesome! And if by some small chance you are doing business in Utah, P.M. me, I will drop my Lawn and Pest Care Company in a minute. They have nobody with the knowledge that you have. They can't tell me what kind of grass I've been fighting, and they're the third company I've hired to get rid of it!!!
A lot going on with my lawn this year. First I recognize you're probably in CA, yet I am in lower Michigan. We've always had a decent front lawn although we live on 4 acres. The lawn is 35 years old. We never irrigate, never fertilize, or treat for crabgrass, or any other thing. The grass went dormant due to hot summer, and everything was dry, and browned out except the undesirable crabgrass and other weeds. We then watered, but the grass never came back, but the crabgrass and other junk came back thick. I have no grass left. I have faith the grass will come back next year as the roots are 14 inches deep in our nice sandy soils, but fear the grass will be chocked out by that time as crabgrass and fuzzy green junk is now thick. After all these years I fear Roundup w/ surfactant is the answer. We were so proud of the green front yard grass, never having to water it, fertilize or treat it as it always looked good. Here's what I think happened. We have a young dog, and in the wintertime I always plowed the front yard of snow with a tractor so he had good areas to choose to go potty. This exposed the grass to harsh wind and cold temps ( 20 below zero) that put a strain on the lawn verses keeping it winter protected under the snow. We had harsh sub zero temps this past winter and I allowed the lawn to freeze out. Dang it. So a word to those that are in four seasons, don't plow your lawn. Keep it covered in snow.
Sounds like you have a few things going on. If you feel the roots are still alive I would do a ph test to see if the ph is to high or too low. You may need to manipulate the ph in order to get some new growth to occur. While this doesn't happen very often I've seen it happen. The annual grasses will die off with the first winter freeze. You might consider sending a soil sample to your local extensions department (extension of the agricultural division) and have them do an analysis. At the least they will tell you if there is any active life in the grass types you want to come back. Thanks for the comment.
Roundup comes in a gel form now in a deodorant stick type application you can wipe on the leaf blades with a rubber gloved hand. So no risk spilling a bowl of roundup on your lawn.
I saw that in Walmart years ago!!! I was trying to buy one and a lady snatched all 8 of them right in front of me hahaha. Then she gave me a lecture on how walmart was discontinuing them. Never had the pleasure of trying it out.
Great video! I am so glad I came across this video and your channel!! I learned a ton in a very short amount of time - instantly subscribed! Thank you for sharing your considerable knowledge 🙂 Not-so-quick question: I seem to get 3 varieties of horizontally growing grass that I assume is all “crabgrass”. One is what you showed (round pattern, long stemmed creepers). The second one is also round-patterned, typically starts with 3 thick, very white colored stems growing out into an almost frond-like pattern of smooth & pointy blades. Roundup doesn’t seem to work and I have to remove each manually with the weed weasel - luckily they have short roots. The last one grows long across the ground - like a vine. I have pulled up sections up to 18 inches long. Even if this stuff looks dead and is brown and dry it will continue to grow once it gets wet. My question is are these all considered “crab grasses”? PS - I can’t wait to binge watch your channel 🙂!!
Sounds like some sort of stolon grass types like bermuda. I would take a sample to the local nursery. Its soo hard to get that type of grass out of the lawn IMO.
Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks for the help!! Between the Bermuda + crab grasses and these tiny wild strawberry weeds (my neighbor thought they “looked cute” but has taken over mine and others yards) I have roughly 2 sq. ft. of actual grass. Maybe I’ll just cultivate the weeds and keep my Kentucky Blue grass in planters 🙂
hahaha. If you want kentucky bluegrass you may want to try the herbicide Tenacity. Tenacity www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DUTNF0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005DUTNF0&linkCode=as2&tag=pestandlawngi-20&linkId=101508a60c6bc63e3f7bf4b29e774b70
I live in Florida and I use baking soda on my crab grass. I have St Augustine sod which is relatively salt tolerant but crab grass is not salt tolerant at all. It only takes about 3-5 days for it to kill the car’s grass completely
Very insightful video. Many thanks. I had herbicide applied last season and did a good job of killing the mature crab grass on my lawn. Now it’s full of yellow dead crab grass pockets 4-5 stages deep. Can I and should I pull them out before the spring warm weather sets in?
Im nor a pro but have great success killing crab grass with drive accellerate, Crab grass shows signs of suffering the next day and is white and dried up in a week. I also use baby shampoo as a surfactant at 1 oz per gallon.
I live in Tennessee and with bermuda grass and a ton of crabgrass. I am going to try to recommendation since I've put down two types of crabgrass killer to very little success. Thanks for the recommendation!
Crabgrass not dying, thats because it’s dallis grass. It’s the Jaws of grass. That’s just for all the people who might be watching this and thinking they have crabgrass.
dutch971 I hate it too, I think some jealous pos dropped the crap in my lawn , it is a bitch to get rid of it.... We had a dry spell so all my good grass dried out and dallisgrass went to work, it loves hard soil and synthetic fertizers
@@pestandlawnginja It was really just the first portion. I think you probably just have great focus is all. Anyway, keep it up I've got a lot to learn.
I used to have a very bad crabgrass problem until the last two years. I found that the best way is put down a granulated preventative and a liquid spray preventative when the ground starts warming in Spring. Can't be too early and can't be too late. Must be shortly before seed germination when the ground temp starts to rise. I have zero crabgrass the last two years.
on this property there used to be i think crabgrass or something similar.we got chickens and they kept eating and eating the grass untill the grass just disappeared.took about 2-3 years though.there was a ton everywhere.
Yes I have tried it. The issue that people will have is the method is not a selective herbicide and will kill everything around it. Most people choose not to be careful and kill everything.
@@BlueRage if you're referring to bunching tall fescue not so much. There are soo many varieties of tall fescue and rtf tall fescue is one of my favorites because the root depth can exceed 15". In return it really helps with drought stress once established. A california favorite blend
Rafa Hino I just did some research and the product to use for St Augustine is called Blindside. You can get it from Amazon. There's also a product called Celsius made by Bayer.
The best defense against crabgrass is a thick stand of turf with timely pre-emergents. My experience with post-emergent control is that you can ding it up (unless you mix higher than the labeled rate which is against the law) but it will shrug it off, and if you remove that plant it leaves a void for a new crabgrass plant. You can spray all the chemical in the world but if there is not a healthy thick stand of turf weeds are going to make their way in. As far as perennials go, round up is the best option. Roundup kills the entire plant. If you dig it up and miss some roots they can regenerate. Aerating and seeding every fall coupled with timely pre-emergents, proper watering/mowing habits, and proper fertilization is the best crabgrass controls.
A great detailed video with technical details. You are knowledgeable about various types of crab grass. You stand out highly against the rest of the weed busters. Great job.
The grass is my yard keeps asking me to feed it. Its belligerence and appetite seem to grow in equal proportions, which was recently and unfortunately evident when the grass ate my boss, Mr. Mushnik. Any advice would be appreciated.
Same here. The home and lawn are only four years old but totally overgrown with crabgrass. Never treated and worst looking yard on block. I feel so terrible.
Great video. The best I've seen so far on Crabgrass control. Unfortunately, in California we have much stricter laws on chemicals and you can't get any of the chemicals you use without a license that also has restricted chemicals included. That being said. I have had luck with Gordons Tri-Mac Plus. The bonus is it kills other weed varieties also, and I also use Surflan, a liquid pre emergent. Keep the videos coming, even for a (very) long time lawn care professional, I love to see different approaches to weed control. Great job!
Really appreciate the comment. Keep in mind these chemicals are not restricted use chemicals. They do have an epa number, but even the items at home depot have that. I haven't checked but they may be restricted use in california.
Wow! I'm blown away by your knowledge! I don't think we can get those products here in Switzerland, but it's fascinating to listen to you. All the best, Rob
I live in South Texas with St Augustine. The grass was not taken care of places. I have crabgrass with huge root structures almost like small plant roots. had to take out a 450 sq ft of grass to get rid of it. Still there are clumps in other areas. How will the herbicide effect the surrounding St Augustine grass. I have been pretty good about digging them out but i think i'm losing the battle. I was also told that St Augustine can take it out if its strong and healthy. Thanks for the great lesson
great question! it all depends on the product and making sure that for use for st augustine is on the label. most of the products listed here are safe but best practice to read the label and be certain as formulations change from time to time.
Thanks for watching today's video. Check out the description to see the products I used today. If you're looking for the best treatments for your lawn, check out my favorite products:

no disrespect but you’re a totally irresponsible to recommend a carcinogen such as Monsanto's Round up, a guy just won a case in the US due to getting CANCER from spraying this poison, whats next you recommending Agent Orange or DDT. recommending this to people for use in their garden where they, Children or pets may come onto contact with this poison is crazy., also round up stays in the soil for decades, and has a detrimental effect on other plants, microbes and insects.
“ANYTHING YOU PUT ON THE LAND AFFECTS THE CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY OF THE LAND, AND THAT’S A POWERFUL PESTICIDE,” the farmer is quoted as saying

Don't you know Round Up only causes cancer in California. And that guy is from the bay area... But did you read the story, he literally bathed and inhaled Round Up.

Subscribed

Crazy times we're living in
I was looking for another type of grass...
me neither. 3 yrs ago i mowed and that was it, didnt care what i was mowing. I must be getting old that i care what my lawn looks like now
This is exactly what happens when you grow up... they lied to us!!!
Thank you! Really appreciate the positive words.
Thanks!!! Glad you liked it. Thats some crazy heat in texas
I've spent three days hand pulling crab grass and after watching your video I feel vindicated that I did the right thing. Thank you!
It's endless, isn't it?
Not only is it not dying, it's laughing at me.
must be dallas grass then. it'll give you the bird finger fast hahaha.

I think our crabgrass is related to each other
Crabgrass: "muwahahahaaa, what else do you have puny human?"

one of the best video descriptions i have seen on youtube of how to control crabgrass, etc;. Thanks for sharing
Zoysia is crazy thick. Love it. Go to domyown.com and do a search on crabgrass and zoysia. They have a few solutions that'll work
Now I know what I dug up! 👍🏻
Thanks! Good luck
Damn, finally someone who knows what he's talking about when it comes to crabgrass. Unofrtunately, my lawn has been overwhelmed and I'm having to kill it and reseed. but now I'll know how to take care of it moving forward!
Thanks Steve!
I have been trying to figure out the difference between Tall Fescue, Johnson Grass, and others, your explanation with examples was great!.
Glad I could help Steven! thanks for watching
I needed this! Looks like my yard right now (Georgia)! I am a new homeowner and by the second summer all these different grasses popped up. Thank you for explaining. Great tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! That was the most straightforward explanation of weed control I've heard so far.
Thanks Robert! Those were my intentions.
Now, its not the greatest - at all.
yes that'll work! most pre emergents provide about 90 days of pre emergent protection.
Wonderful! Love that you're finding value!
Good grief. I learned more about these weeds and products than I ever have. Tough to catch all of it, but I'll go back and take notes. Great job and you seem extremely knowledgeable! Well done brother!

First time home owner here. After doing days of research, this whole lawn care game is wildly confusing and overwhelming. Came looking for answers and again left feeling even more confused/overwhelmed. rip my yard.
sorry to hear. check out some of my current videos. I have lots of videos on starting points.
When I say do it, it mean do it with precaution, if it sth dangerous, do it under expert supervision. I can totally see that accident at backdoor gardening gonna create a blackhole. Great video, I have heard over the years having a thick, healthy lawn will prevent a lot weeds coming up. It's like the opposite, less grass the weeds will choke out the grass, more grass, the grass will choke out the weeds.🤔🤔🤔. Thanks
possibly
Good information. Where I am, in zone 7B, tall fescue is one of the good guys. Other options are Bermuda or centipede (gardeners hate because it’s the worst weed they battle), zoysia or St Augustine. I hate glyphosate. I kill crabgrass with baking soda! It also works on certain weeds with a flat rosette and deep taproot.
Very cool thanks for sharing.
Love it! I made a video this season about digging crabgrass out by hand! Can you dig it!
Thanks for the time you put into this video. I learned more in 10:52 than I have in the past several years. Well explained and great advice.
Appreciate that Michael! Thanks for watching my video.
First and foremost keep the grass thick.
this is the most comprehensive and clarified video about weeds control so far.thanks for sharing .
Glad you enjoyed it!
Each gallon costs less than $1.00.
yes. important to remember this is a non-selective herbicide and will kill everything it touches. with proper care it can work very well.
Holy Smokes! I can't keep all of that straight. I did not know there were annual, and biannual grasses. I will have to watch this 10 times.
Thanks for watching!
Dam I never realized how many different kinds of grass there is. Geez trying to learn all of the things to do to a lawn is like having another full time job. 😳
Exactly!
The best video on grass and weed control I have ever seen! You nailed it bro!
Thanks Jim!!! Really appreciate you spending the time and watching.
Another point: if you use a pre-emergent to prevent those seeds from germinating, you may not be able to plant healthy perennial seed at the same time.
thanks for your insite.
EPA still says it is not carcinogenic (when used as labeled) I think homeowners forget to wear proper PPE when applying.
@@j_____m3568 So much for the EPA and protecting citizens. A safe alternative is full-strength vinegar.

The issue is that crabgrass is an annual grass. It has a period of death. You're at the mercy that the new seeds will sprout the following season
Seriously one of the best videos on TH-cam for this subject...well done! Are you in the Midwest?
Hey Mark! Appreciate the incredible compliment. I'm located in Utah.
Apply Pre Emergents in the beginning of the year Jan -Mar. I would stay away from Prodiamine
That is a grass I don't think I've encountered. I know we have decorative fountain grass but it doesn't sound like the same thing you're describing.
I see it in multiple lawns in my neighborhood. When I talk with the landscaping guys they don't know what it is. Here is more info. Is spreads from the ornamental and is perrenial.

I just hired someone yesterday. Only good thing about doing my own lawn was loosing 13 lbs. Florida is too hot right now.😟
Yep. It's time to "hire the man"!
Thanks for the comment lookslike 4moreyears! don't forget to put those pre emergents down early!!! Sounds like you have a game plan. Good luck!
Thanks for the comment Frank. Chickweed is very difficult to get rid of.
Great information. I am dealing with crab grass right now. I used BioAdvance All-In-One Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer Ready-To-Spray. Didn't do much, now I am digging up and treating some with vinegar.
sorry to hear that. calibration is a big deal when dealing with these types of products. be sure that its actually crabgrass as well. Best.

I have to say I'm impressed with the knowledge that comes along with your videos! No gimmics, just straight up knowledge! A+
Thanks AaronD711! It's taken me years to get where I'm at and I'm happy to share.

Sounds like Scotch Thistle.

Meism THANKS!!! Huge compliment. Appreciate it.
What do you think about these companies who sell plans and come out periodically for fertilization, weed control, and aeration?

Around here we get dallisgrass, and it is a huge pain in the grass! Comes back every year and spreads like kudzu, it will take over a lawn. It grows so quickly, in the peak growing season the seed pods will stick up a foot or more in 4 to 5 days.

They can't tell me what kind of grass I've been fighting, and they're the third company I've hired to get rid of it!!!
Hey Brian. Super kind of you to say. I work for All Green out of provo. Check then out myallgreen.com
Thanks for commenting back Pest & Lawn Ginja. Respect your input. I'l get soil tested and see what level it needs to be and bring it back up.
Finally! Somebody who could answer the questions I really had about crab grass and tall fescue. I've been scowering the internet/ Great work man!
Makes me happy hearing this George! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for sharing your considerable knowledge 🙂
Not-so-quick question: I seem to get 3 varieties of horizontally growing grass that I assume is all “crabgrass”.

I live in Florida and I use baking soda on my crab grass. I have St Augustine sod which is relatively salt tolerant but crab grass is not salt tolerant at all. It only takes about 3-5 days for it to kill the car’s grass completely
I could see that working with st Augustine. Unfortunately the cool season grasses shrivel like the best of them.
Very insightful video. Many thanks. I had herbicide applied last season and did a good job of killing the mature crab grass on my lawn. Now it’s full of yellow dead crab grass pockets 4-5 stages deep. Can I and should I pull them out before the spring warm weather sets in?
Always a wise choice to pull them so the grass roots have a chance to fill the space.
Im nor a pro but have great success killing crab grass with drive accellerate, Crab grass shows signs of suffering the next day and is white and dried up in a week. I also use baby shampoo as a surfactant at 1 oz per gallon.
Drive is a great product. Sounds like you're doing it right if you're getting good results.
Hi there. I have a little bit of everything in my grass...crabgrass, mushrooms, weeds, various kinds of bugs and worms.
Hey Peace World!!! You got this!!! You show that crabgrass who's boss

Hey Albert!
Excellent content. You will be my lawn care go-to guy from now on.
Huge compliment LP&S. Thank you.
I've found that frequent mowing helps.
If the annuals can't bud, flower, and seed, they won't have much progeny the next year. 👍
Very true!
@@pestandlawnginja Maybe you can have a series on mowing? Mowing height, mower maintenance and recommendations? 👍
@@Pallidus_Rider in the works for sure!
I live in Tennessee and with bermuda grass and a ton of crabgrass. I am going to try to recommendation since I've put down two types of crabgrass killer to very little success. Thanks for the recommendation!
You're welcome Bob! Let me know how it goes!
Excellent stuff Dr Ginja. Keep up the good work sir.
Thanks!
Crabgrass not dying, thats because it’s dallis grass. It’s the Jaws of grass.
That’s just for all the people who might be watching this and thinking they have crabgrass.
very good point! They do look alike too. Love the suggestion.
dutch971 I hate it too, I think some jealous pos dropped the crap in my lawn , it is a bitch to get rid of it.... We had a dry spell so all my good grass dried out and dallisgrass went to work, it loves hard soil and synthetic fertizers
Great info, but I feel like this guy doesn't ever blink...
Hahahaha. I get that comment every now and then
@@pestandlawnginja It was really just the first portion. I think you probably just have great focus is all. Anyway, keep it up I've got a lot to learn.
@@dmennenoh it's probably the fact im a night Walker🤣🤣🤣
@@pestandlawnginja I used Surfactant and tenacity and soaked it. 2 weeks So far it hasn't killed nothing but my hope

Awesome! Glad you found something that is working for you.
Granule Pre is horrrible.. Use liquid and a herbicide
on this property there used to be i think crabgrass or something similar.we got chickens and they kept eating and eating the grass untill the grass just disappeared.took about 2-3 years though.there was a ton everywhere.
Crazy!
Thanks for the video. Informative.
I use straight up baking soda to kill weeds. It’s awesome! Have you tried it?
Aloha
Yes I have tried it. The issue that people will have is the method is not a selective herbicide and will kill everything around it. Most people choose not to be careful and kill everything.
How do you use the baking soda? sprinkled on or 50/50 sprayed on?
I want a yard that is full of that bunching tall fescue. I love that stuff.
To each there own. It's a hardy grass. Not so inviting on the feet though
@@BlueRage if you're referring to bunching tall fescue not so much. There are soo many varieties of tall fescue and rtf tall fescue is one of my favorites because the root depth can exceed 15". In return it really helps with drought stress once established. A california favorite blend
I have St Augustine grass. Can I use quinclorac to kill crabgrass?
Unfortunately not
So what are our options?
Rafa Hino I just did some research and the product to use for St Augustine is called Blindside. You can get it from Amazon. There's also a product called Celsius made by Bayer.
@@3pumpkins170 thanks for this!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I do agree that the best way to keep weeds away is to get the grass nice and thick.
A great detailed video with technical details. You are knowledgeable about various types of crab grass. You stand out highly against the rest of the weed busters. Great job.
Thanks Michael! appreciate the support
The grass is my yard keeps asking me to feed it. Its belligerence and appetite seem to grow in equal proportions, which was recently and unfortunately evident when the grass ate my boss, Mr. Mushnik.
Any advice would be appreciated.
sounds like a personal problem
I just moved in to my house a few months back. Person before me never treated it. It looks like shit I almost want to cry lol
You can fix it! I'll pray for you
Same here. The home and lawn are only four years old but totally overgrown with crabgrass. Never treated and worst looking yard on block. I feel so terrible.
This is all you need it's called Quincloac 75DF it will decimate crab grass guarantee.
does a great job
Thank you much. After watching this video I realize I spent hours pulling out what I thought was crabgrass. Good info
Glad it helped!
Can you do a video on how to eliminate ants and other insects from the lawn and patio that’s safe for pets?
Thanks.
Hey Robert! Thanks for the idea. I'll place it up on my white board. Really appreciate the suggestion.
I recently read that cornmeal kills them.
that is true!
Water and dawn soap works wonders
orthoboric (boric) acid kills ants, earwigs, and other insects preying on the patio plants
Great video! Thanks for taking the time. Very knowledgeable.
Thanks Ohio Ham!! Thanks for watching!
Interesting, , the simple cheap way is to dig it out and seed.
indeed
It may be cheap but it ain't simple. Digging sucks.

Thanks Rob! Wish i could get on the lawns there. someday!
These are a pest from hell. I will try this. I'm tired of taking the garden how and digging it up from the root

I use to wet the lawn, wait a day or so, then pull the quack grass and tall fescue manually. The chemicals mentioned here are knew to me.

You're welcome don! Thanks for the comment. have a great day.
