I love the Kobo Color! It's a beautiful experience. I have the Kindle Scribe and I believe Amazon really missed the mark on that one. The Scribe is definitely a nice device, but it's the one I turn to the least because of the large size and the limited use of the stylus. In contrast, with the Kobo, I can annotate a book the way I would if I were reading an actual paperback or hardback.
I also dislike that you can’t annotate on the page on the Scribe. Amazon should have made the Oasis or an Oasis size as their “Scribe” or even 8” instead of 7”.
Great review, trying to talk myself into one 😂, although most my reading is in black and white so not sure I need it. Please do a review when you get the stylus. Thx
This was a really good review!! Thanks for this! I was undecided between the kobo and the kindle, I think I will go with the kobo. It feels like a better long term investment since it's colour and you can annotated it! I only read technical books, so underlining and side notes are defo a must!
I find the big problem with Kindle, though this applies to any e-book (or any other digital media) ecosystem, is that should you - for whatever reason - violate the or happen to hack off Amazon via one of their many, many, many, many, many services and they threaten to close your account - you risk losing all your e-books, audiobooks, purchased Prime Video content, etc. We've also seen cases when a company removes itself from a country (Barnes and Noble in the UK) and palming the service off to another company - only for that company to eventually shut down the service. I really do wish e-books were platform and ecosystem neutral where the same content can be used across all e-readers and platforms. But as always, tech companies "know best". As for me, as Amazon wields a bit too much power, I'm moving to Kobo (Colour Libra) and buying new books there. But I'm using Calibre to make a full backup of my Kindle library as a precaution.
@@ANSageWrites Here in the UK, I've written to my MP about the right to transfer digital goods to other services. He's replied to say that he'll debate this in parliament when it comes up, but that could take ages. It's a start, though! Yes, I've chosen the Kobo Colour Libra because it's the closest to the Kindle Oasis in form, plus the Kobo supports more formats than the Kindle - it's more "open" (or as much as open can be in a protected ecosystem). I'll probably stick with Audible for audiobooks for the time being, however.
@@ANSageWrites If you plan to use Calibre, I would suggest you to also take advantage of its "Annotations" plugin which will allow you to back-up your highlights/notes from your Kobo to your Calibre/PC :) (Plus, with Calibre and Kobo, you will also able to automatically create collections and to update any metadata you wish for all your books. I love playing around with subtitiles and series :D)
Thank you for your practical review. I'm not into all the tech specs but just want to know the ins and outs as a reader. I'm in the States with a Kindle Paperwhite so would have to transfer content with Calibre. My main concern however is that one of my favorite authors is a Kindle Unlimited author with several longrunning series. While I do have a Kindle app on my Samsung Galaxy phone I'm assuming I would have to purchase her books, download to Kindle app and then transfer yet again to the Kobo? That being said I still really would like to get away from being so tied to Amazon and this color ereader ticks all of my boxes - size, physical page turn buttons and USB-C charging. Am I missing anything?
I think you got it all! I'm not sure how calibre works or if it goes against any Amazon rules and regulations so I can't speak to it. I know people mentioned there are certain books it can't transfer and I'm thinking those might be KU books since they are exclusive to Amazon. With that said, I'm keeping my kindle specifically for KU books and will be using Kobo for everything else.
Nice review! Very helpful! I tend to take a lot of notes while studying, do you think this would be a good buy for me? Or are there better readers for note taking during reading pdfs?
If it’s just for note taking, I think the remarkable might be better. This one is great for reading with the added ability of taking notes and annotating but it’s not strictly a digital notebook
The E Ink technology is the same. If or when Amazon brings out a Color Kindle, the screen is likely to be the same tech as the Kobo Libra Color. But the Kobo has the first mover advantage. I'm sure Amazon is confident of domination over the Color E Readers when it brings out its own Color Kindles.
@ANSageWrites Lol, agree with you there! They know they're the biggest player, and are working to a plan. They're sure that once their Color Kindle comes out, many will upgrade to it, and they will use their dominant position to get more money out of existing Kindle owners.
I would not hold my breath for colour Kindles anytime soon... not only has Amazon recently downsized its Kindle team significantly, but manufacturing of the eInk colour screens has not been easy to ramp up to volume. So Kobo by coming out first, Rakuten Kobo has essentially booked all the company's colour screen production capacity for the rest of 2024 and into 2025 (Kindles also use eInk screens exclusively). Plus with Kindle having almost ten times the market share of Kobo, eInk would have to be able to produce ten times the volume to colour screens in order for Amazon to be able to offer a colour Kindle... its not going to happen anytime soon. Maybe in 2026 there will be a colour Kindle actually available, unless Kindle goes with a completely different screen technology.
@ablair7007 The Amazon Kindle has become ubiquitous now. The growth as percentage is going to be difficult unless there is a breakthrough idea or a novelty, say, a Color Kindle. You are right, the same Company supplies both Kobo and Amazon. Interesting info about the volumes locked down by Kobo. Obviously they have the first mover advantage. But the Amazon Kindle user base is huge. Whenever they bring out something substantially novel, that is the demographic that will drive sales and volume growth. If, however, Amazon has given up the battle for now, that would mean a long delay. Even if Amazon pushes for more production growth, it will take years to move from plans to production. Guess they're looking at some other numbers. Interesting info. Thanks.
Hi. You have 20 books but only 3 on Kobo. Yours was one of the videos that helped me upgrade my Kobo to the Clara Colour. I don't need the note taking side and the Clara fits into my pocket. Thank you.
Sorry. A couple more short books, but 3 novels 2 of which are free. I have them and will read soon. All I am saying is get more books on Kobo. I don't know how it works but they owe you
I’m trying to make sure any self published book I put out is wide on all platforms. For the other books, my publisher sets those parameters. But yes, the goal would be to have everything on kobo. I’ve heard amazing things about the Clara color! I hope you love it! ❤️
I have been trying to get through "What the River Knows", for like three months, in my spare time. It lives on my bed because I feel guilty for not finishing it. Lol. The physical book, I mean. I am a Book of the Month Club member, but I also have a Paperwhite. I am an Ex-Googler and I come from the tech, writing, and design world, so I am very interested in this comparison. Also, your books are right up my alley, and I had never heard of you before this video. Lol.
ooooh you should try it on an ebook. I really liked it so it’s worth starting. If you get the kobo, I’d love to know how you feel about it! And nice to meet you on here 🥰
From what I can see, there is no option for images in the notebooks themselves. Hopefully that could be an update for the future because I'd love that as well. Thank you for watching!
Thank you. Can you borrow and read newspapers or comics from the library in canada? I currently use apps like Hoopla and PressReader with the Toronto Public Library.
I’d do a search cos I’m sure you can read newspapers and even download for offline reading in the Pocket app which is included in the Kobo natively, underneath Dropbox and Google Drive
I’ve currently got the same Kindle PW and I’m very very tempted to go with the Kobo Libra Color due to its features (not just the color aspect). I’ve only got 81 Kindle ebooks so it shouldn’t be too hard to move over, however, I just don’t know what to do with KU as KU is a great option if I end up reading a lot, which I hope to eventually. Even reading one Ebook a month you get your $ worth with KU. So I’m really indecisive, not to mention at the moment I can’t justify owning 2 ereaders at the moment 😢 I just don’t do enough reading, hopefully I will one day and I’ll definitely be buying a Kobo in the future.
Hi all, I'm just curious whether other stylus (microsoft surface pen or etc) would work with the Libra? I've already placed my order for Libra, but am hesitant to buy the stylus due to the price.
You can use any stylus with MPP (Microsoft). I have got the Metapen 1 and it works great with my Kobo Libra Colour, at 1/3 of the prize of the original one!
On this ereader they applied a trick tough to make it better then the other kaleido 3 colorscreen ereaders. They switched up the order of the screenlayers. @@Grr8jon
