    Oh my God - this is EXACTLY what I look like when I'm swinging the club. I've been trying to fix this forever and no matter what drills I do - and I perform the drills perfectly, by the way - when I go back out there to swing for real, that "flick" thing comes back just naturally. This "shoulders" tip is wonderful and another affirmation as to why your channel is the best golf instruction channel out there - bar none. And what makes you really special is that you make me laugh out loud with every video I watch. Thanks so much!

      I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction.
      With regard to that "flick thing", those "ghosts of swings past" are stubborn and they don't give up without a fight. One suggestion is to spend some time working on your swing rhythm. There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing to the "hit" instinct (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm, and perhaps related to your "flick"). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss.
      Thanks for your message, keep up the great work, and keep it fun out there!

    I've been playing golf not very regularly for 36 years and never broken 100. My ball striking has been more of a slap. I have been looking for some simple instructions to follow and came across your video on ball striking. I've just got back from the range and what a difference. Following three or four of your simple instructions I gained 30 yds and hit the ball crisply. It has given me hope for beating 100 again. Your instructions are genius and has renewed my appetite for golf again. Thank you.

    Was literally just at the range 10 minutes ago. Was slicing driver about 20 yards off line.(Which was my normal miss from a few years ago.) Started thinking about getting my right shoulder under my chin at follow through. Striped 10 drives in a row right down the middle. I was keeping my shoulders moving through the whole swing.

    I felt the same feeling with great results yesterday during my round. More fairways hit 9 out of 14. Still only 6 out of 18 greens but missed constantly to the right. My score 92 with two triples and 6 more putts than my average. I’m 71 still playing from the middle tee box. And am 5 months post op from a total right knee replacement. Started playing for the first time last May and I've played every other sport left handed. For some reason I could not correct my bad baseball slice left handed so I decided to swing right handed. I started watching you and progressed quickly then...I watched other instructors and then digressed quickly. About a month ago, I decided that you are the only TH-cam instructor that I'm allowing in my brain! Shot 92 with 7 double bogeys. Thank you for simplifying things and making golf fun :). One thing that I would enjoy watching (even though it is not where you've decided to reside on TH-cam) is a round or 9 holes where we can watch every part of your game. Personally, I feel like I would gain so much more by watching you drive, approach, and chip. The best clubs in my bag are 7 through wedges. I've literally put my driver in a long timeout, however, I've been watching your old driving videos with the slight hip forward approach and need to practice that. Anyways, long post but Thank you for all you do! And would consider playing a couple holes?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      You only started playing a few months ago and you already are shooting in the low-90's??? That's outstanding!!! 💪💪 I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!!

      With regard to watching different videos from different sources, your personal experience is case in point that we must be careful about navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. That is not a dig against any other teachers out there. It's simply best to commit to a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put your blinders on, and stick to it. And if the system I teach appeals to you or at the very least stokes your curiosity, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of it in a more structured manner before fully committing to it: go.saguto.golf/

      Yeah that 92 was also with 7 double bogeys so I know I'll break 90 soon. There are no slights towards any other instructors for sure. The awesome thing about your instruction is just the fact that simplicity gives confidence and confidence knocks off strokes. I think I've taken a look at that video before but I'll watch it again. Would you consider an updated one with your swing now?@@SagutoGolf

    Hey Tom,
    This is Gabe, not sure if you remember me but I’ve commented a few times before. I just wanted to thank you so much for your instruction. Today I played in our high schools district tournament and helped our team qualify for the state championship. We thought that we had been beaten by another team by ONE STROKE. Turns out they can’t count and we actually were tied. So I shot a 97 through 18 holes which placed me in second place on my team. The top two from both teams go to the playoff hole. I hit my drive down the middle, pured my iron shot to the left of the green by putting weight on my lead foot, tucked in my elbow and chipped up to the green, and made the 15 FOOT PUTT FOR PAR
    I can’t thank you enough for helping my golf game and I can’t wait to get better from your videos! Wish me luck at state!

    A little over a year ago I watched one of Tom's videos on focusing on driving the shoulders, not arms or hips at the start of the down swing and it changed my golf game forever. I literally went from 125yds to 145-50 on my PW. Great contact, no more fat shots. Went from a 14 to a 6 handicap in a year! It's my only swing thought now, start the downswing with the lead shoulder and GET the trail shoulder through. That's it! Nothing more! The arms are only a long for the ride just like a trebuchet. The hips will drive and lead without having to think about it. The only thing I have to make sure to retain tilt, not just turn shoulders horizontal.
    Thanks Tom for changing my golf life!!

    OMG I hit balls in my garage into a net following your instructions about left arm straight,hands down and a little forward of the ball, keep my right elbow close to my rib cage and start my swing with the left shoulder. Played yesterday on the first tee I out drove my friends by 30 yards usually about 230 and I measured it with my GPS 285 yd

    I think I mentioned this on one of your last few videos (RE: shoulder turn). I see a lot of golfers confuse that rotation with arm "lift". In reality, and I watched every shot you just hit, there is very little arm "lift" in your swing but great shoulder turn. Once this movement is consistent then you see a drop in the "over the top" and casting issues. This is good stuff here. Also, your divots are fire !!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure I did, Ritchie, as I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results.
      You are spot on in that there is no independent lifting action in this swing system. If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, we can then allow the big muscles to drive the swing, and the combined tilting/turning/extending motions will elevate the club to the perfect "slotted" position at the top without the need for any contrived manipulations. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.
      Thanks for your message and support. I'm glad you enjoyed the crispy roasted divots!! 😎

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job successfully incorporating it into your swing!!
      It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content.
      Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following:
      1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices.
      Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA.
      2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft of the driver is considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
      3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )

    Tom … I truly believe your “keep your shoulders moving in a circle” is one of THE TRUE FUNDAMENTALS. So many things in golf are taught as fundamentals… but they are actually latent reactions to an actual fundamental. I do believe that “keep the shoulders moving” must be combined with “ROTATE AROUND A STABLE ANCHORED SPINE” … at least for me. Your shoulders turn in a circle imagery keeps the club on plane , sequences the body, keeps the head/spine behind ball at impact, creates lag … so many things that are taught separately as fundamentals… but are actual latent RESULTS of the true fundamentals. If a person takes your advice … and learns to set up AND ALIGN PROPERLY (another fundamental in my opinion) … they will hit it consistently solid in their intended direction
    Please keep up the great teaching and thank you!!!

      @@SagutoGolf I'll check out the lessons! Yes, I try to keep thoughts to a minimum; for now, There are maybe 4: takeaway with the body not hands; point the lead shoulder to the ball; get the weight on the lead leg before the downswing; and keep the trail arm connected. I'm hoping that over time and with practice, most or all of that will happen without me thinking at all.

      I'm very glad to learn of your improvement with the longer clubs, Barry!! With those short irons, try moving the ball back closer to mid-stance in your setup while keeping your hands even with the inside of your front thigh as they should be for all clubs (the shaft will definitely be leaning forward). Also, make sure you are keeping your weight loading forward and maintaining your relationship with the ball throughout the swing.

    yes, i guess we're all on a journey with this game. the shot played from a deep divot in last weeks pga tour event demonstrated the importance of trail shoulder rotation thru the shot ; and, the key- as you demonstrate- is to turn it thru towards the target. this ensures that a player uses the correct muscles in their shoulder. the clavicle leads; but, it is not physically possible to actively turn the clavicle thru until the club starts to move back round to the ball. in the start of the downswing the club moves away from ball; and, then it starts to move back round to the ball. it is at this point that the hitting area begins and the clavicle turns thru. the left side of the right forearm is key to clavicle rotation thru the shot. when muscles in the left side of the right forearm are fully activated, in the start of the downswing, it loads the muscles around the clavicle.

    Im pretty sure this is what my problem was too. Ive been in a major slump for months. I always felt like i had to hold the hips and shoulders back to prevent from "shooting the hips". Once i started to point the trail shoulder at the ball to start the downswing things started improving and felt more free flowing and had more power.

The cult that is quietly, surreptitiously gathering lost swings from the vast purgatorial abyss of failed "conventional" instruction and leading them to the way and the truth of a method rooted in the unchanging principles of physics and geometry. Thanks. I'll check it out. And thanks for responding. You may want to read my most recent Notes to Self. Honestly Tom there is no circle in the golf swing. There is the implication of a circle but it's an arc. It's part of a circle. The reason I mention it is because with the circle in mind too many of us are doing waaaaay more than is needed on the back swing. Just a thought. Peace.@@SagutoGolf

      I appreciate your suggestion! The course vlogs are rather difficult for me to justify from a cost-benefit perspective. They take considerable time to record and produce, and they just don't garner anywhere near the viewership and interest in comparison to the lesson videos; I must keep the desires of my general audience in mind in this regard. Perhaps I’ll do another at some point, but at this juncture my primary focuses are supporting my online school and its members while creating quality instruction content for this channel's subs and visitors.

    Great video! Do you shift any weight/pressure to your trail side during the backswing? Or do you always keep your weight forward?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
      The need for a *_weight shift_* in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some *_transfer of pressure_* into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing system I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.

    I’m playing the Frankenmuth course The Fortress in 2 days and “My swing feels like an unfolded lawn chair!” For 2 weeks I was striking my irons great. 4 days ago I have been sooooo weak. My right elbow feels trashed (tennis elbow and pain…too many range balls in my garage) - wonder if that may be the culprit in losing 4-6mph swing speed. I’m going to try this tip and see how it works. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

    Hi Tom, I hit golf balls so much better since learning ur mechanics. The question I have is this - do the arms rotate the shoulders back and through or does the body turn and the arms follow?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patrick,
      Are you still in the school, because the Community section of the new platform is the best place for swing related questions.
      With regard to your "chicken vs. egg" inquiry, there is no right answer. This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible.
      For example, in this particular episode I'm conveying a feel for the shoulders driving the entire swing. The premise here is that if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. Here are a few lessons on this topic:
      - th-cam.com/video/1FLm67Fn81M/w-d-xo.html
