I think the main takeaway is motivation. Self promoting motivation is not pleasing to God even if the deeds themselves are good. He wants our motives to come from the first and second commandments. Love of God and love of neighbor.

This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
