The reason these tracks don't loop is because they belong to on-rails shooter segments. Every chapter has one of those sections, and if a track is roughly 5 minutes long (the amount of time Pit can fly before his wings burn up) then it's one of those. Because they're on-rails, they're almost scored more like movies than games, perfectly synced up to the action.
Yeah, love the way they did this. Also goes for Xenoblade 1's music for the cutscenes. Sadly they didn't really follow suit quite as much in any of the sequels. In XC1 it's like this for pretty much any of the dynamic cutscenes including the ones where they just talk, but in XC2 and XC3 it's mostly relegated to the action ones. XCX didn't really have any of that (though it's pretty insane how 1 guy composed pretty much all of the music).
@@XenaticLuxo No, I don't have them mixed up. The music loops, but the cutscenes are still scripted to work with the music. Even when just talking the highlight of the music would usually come when characters would talk about hope or something good (assuming you just use auto scrolling for the text and not manual where this is an option). Like the cutscene early on in the game when Shulk and Reyn talk after the key event in Colony 9. Or when Shulk talks to Dunban just after the Prison Island events about halfway through the game. I noticed that from the start in XC1 and that wasn't quite the case for any of the other games where the music coinciding with the cutscenes was mostly restricted to the action packed scenes.
Sakurai was very intelligent and insightful with the game design on this game. A lot of people tend to think that autoscrollers are outdated, but he reframed it as a strength. Then, knowing that a lot of gamers have never played shmups before, he rennovated the difficulty system to something really exciting and rewarding. Much respect to Sakurai.
The reason this game/game soundtrack is such HIGH quality is due to one simple factor: game lead is Masuhiro Sakurai…the creator of SMASH BROTHERS and KIRBY. He’s one of the BIG boys in Nintendo; one this guys that goes “I want to make a game” and Nintendo says “ok, here, take ALL the money and talent you need”. This game was one of Sakurai’s passion projects.
Just a slight clarification on the "[Sakurai] is one of the big boys in Nintendo" point, Sakurai doesn't work for Nintendo, he works with Nintendo. He's never been an employee of Nintendo (HAL is a closely affiliated by still independent 3rd party developer) he's just been contracted by them for his projects. The rest of what you said is true though, he's an extremely respected collaborator
I would always be hesitant to say "don't want to", in the world of game development (any creative field really); it's always a matter of what projects can secure what money and what team for the next 3-5 year cycle. And sometimes stuff is outright quietly planned to wait about 10 years before revisiting in a special way, etc (not to mention just not being allowed to talk about what's explicitly being planned but not announced as a common policy which can sound the same as 'not wanting to/allowing to die'). I mean, say if Sakurai wanted to have proper directing/oversight for a remaster/sequel, then the time for that to occur really would've been *after* Smash 4 + Smash Ult's collective development cycle finally ended. Which means honestly it'd only just recently be around time to hear about it as a plausibility, especially since its systems'd have to be adjusted quite a bit for single screen; deciding how to handle the character portraits and dialogue in the same space as the main gameplay, and the special ability palate, etc. On top of that overlap of needs, Sakurai's preoccupation with Smash at the time, the pandemic's impact on ongoing projects, and the Switch 2 being due to happen, I'd dare to say there just hasn't been an ideal time to pick up KI:U again just yet in reality if it hasn't only just happened behind the scenes.
There's way too much to say about this game... But the gist is Kid Icarus is definitely an "underground" Nintendo IP if it weren't for Smash. The original was on NES (1986), then they made a Game Boy game (1991) then the IP went dormant for years until Nintendo added Pit to Smash Brawl. The character was popular in Brawl so Nintendo had Sakurai (THE smash bros guy) make a new game for 3DS (uprising). The composers were mostly people who worked on Brawl music. Uprising sold well but overall the series is pretty niche. I grew up with the Game Boy game so I'll always love these games. Also the guy who did Chaos Vortex Hirokazu Tanaka did the original NES game's music along with the original Metroid so it's cool they had him on as a guest!
Yeah, it's a pretty small IP. The first game was from 1986/87, the 2nd from 91 and the franchise was pretty much dead until the sequel in 2012... and it's been dead since. And it's not like the games didn't sell all that well, Uprising sold over a million and the franchise sold over 3 million in total with 3 games. Honestly I don't think we'll ever get another major Kid Icarus game. The next one would probably be closer to 2D game along the likes of the original, kinda like an indie-tier game.
Keep wishing they did a Switch post of Uprising because it's such a fantastic game, and the soundtrack is up there as one of my all-time favorites. Honestly baffled there are no other requests for Uprising music. Maybe I should switch to a higher tier sub again...
It's such a hard game to get attached to its themes (...I mean, hard to get attached, besides the obvious bangers. Hi Dark Pit.), because they're whole suites for each of the on-rails sections. It's all good but it's a bit tricky to say "Oh yeah, this is worth showing up as something interesting!" even if frankly, yeah this might be a good game to go showing these themes, they are pretty juicy pieces to bite into. I loved the fact Jesse caught up on the "dog-fighting" feeling for Chaos Vortex, fitting the final part where you are right on the tail of the Chaos Kin and blasting it down into the on-land section, there's probably potential for material like this in some of the other songs.
@@dawk7 Maybe it's a bit strange, but my favorites are the Little Girl and the Dog's themes from the Ring of Chaos chapter. Something about them I really love.
@@corruptedteka Nope. Fairly common pick, and 100% certified bangers. Also my favorite. That violin is _sweet,_ nevermind the guitar going hard on the dog.
Kid Icarus is one of those strange classic Nintendo series. I'm pretty sure it only has three games total on the NES, GameBoy and this one on 3DS. Masahiro Sakurai of Kirby and Smash Bros. fame directed Uprising in between the third and fourth Smash games like 20 years after the previous Kid Icarus game. It's basically nothing like the previous games too, going from a 2D platformer series to Uprising being a mix of on-rails shooter and 3rd person action game.
That guitar riff that starts at 6:00 is soooo motoi sakuraba it hurts. I love it so much. Chaos Vortex is one of my favorite songs in the soundtrack and it's so underrated imo.
What you said about "whatever this place is is not a good one" for the chaos vortex theme...ohhh you would be right, this chapter had me locked in so much when I played it and the things that were at stake when fighting the boss for this chapter. Also one of the most nightmare chapters for me at least to try and achieve that 9.0 difficulty because of how much you had to endure on it... This game has a dear place in my heart and I use to spend so much time on it back on the 3ds days lol.
While I could talk about how Kid Icarus was one from Nintendo's dormant franchises for the longest times, how THE Masahiro Sakurai basically restored it from the 16 bit fossil it was or how harsh all 3 games were in their own right,; I want to shine light that Kid Icarus was the franchise chosen to be played by Mario himself in the Super Mario Bros Movie being front and center for a couple of frames, and while it might not seem like much, with how closely Nintendo was checking its development, I think it's worth noting
You hit the ball out of the park with Chaos Vortex Jesse. I absolutely love it when you're able to nail the theme and atmosphere of the game, despite never seeing the game before, just from the music. That's when you know they did a good job.
Well, they certainly cared a lot about THIS game, but it may surprise you to know that the actual franchise consists of exactly three titles, one of which was never even released in Japan until the Virtual Console came around (and thus isn't acknowledged at all by Uprising). The huge gap between this game and the NES original means that most of the modern fanbase exists pretty much entirely because of this one game (and to a lesser extent, Smash), which should tell you right away how special it is. You'll find that many of Uprising's tracks are more similar to a movie score than VGM, because they play on on-rails segments where the music is synched up to what's happening on screen. You got Chaos Vortex right on the money though. You're diving into a literal chaos dimension with all that entails, followed by an intense dogfight where you're chasing after the being who created it, the music swelling as the in-universe time limit on Pit's ability to fly starts running out, then the final few seconds ending on a triumphant note as you finally shoot it down.
YAY MORE KID ICARUS !!!! Yes, this franchise sits in a dark attic somewhere. There are 3 games, 2 of them being 8-bit, and Uprising being on the 3DS. So... yeah that's what we've got ! Uprising is regarded as a cult classic 3DS game though, if that tells you anything. Some people even call it the best 3DS game period ! And Sakurai-san, the one who revived the franchise, has been pretty clear that the series is not coming back any time soon. I'd love to get a surprise announcement, but, yeah I don't think it'll happen.
Kid Icarus Uprising, my beloved. This was such a time sinker game for me when i first had my 3ds. The story The gameplay The SOUNDTRACK So good. Such a fawkin treat
Kid Icarus Uprising felt like a labor of love for an almost forgotten series. It was such a well-written, hilarious, and fun game. The only problem was the control scheme was a fast track to cramps and carpal tunnel. For good reason, as it worked, but the 3DS was far from being the most ergonomic of systems.
If we're going down the Kid Icarus Uprising rabbit hole, my recommendation is to listen to two tracks at a time. Typically every level/chapter is split into 3 sections: an on rails flight segment, an on foot ground segment, and finally the boss of the chapter. The majority of levels use the same boss battle theme, so that leaves you with section 1 and 2 of the chapter with music that build on each other. Section 1 will be a nonstop cinematic music track that plays into the on rails action of the level; section 2 turns into a looping track as you travel on foot at your leisure. For what you listened to, the pairings would be Chapter 14 Lightning Battle followed by Chapter 14 Thundercloud Temple. The other is Chapter 21 The Chaos Vortex followed by Chapter 21 Chaos Island. If you want more different sounding music from the game, I suggest Chapter 5 Pandora's Labyrinth of Deceit + Into the Labyrinth and Chapter 15 Mysterious Invaders + Aurum Island.
Context for the Chaos Vortex: Pit(the MC) is flying through the vortex looking for the monster that stole Lady Palutainas soul. At 16:31, Pit finds the monster, the Chaos Kin, and starts to chase after it, the reason why the music gets more intense is because Pit can only fly for 5 minutes( which is also why Lightning Battle, and a majority of the ost is under 5 minutes long), so you’re on a time limit to shoot down the Chaos Kin before Pits wings burn up, and the Chaos Kin gets away.
Chaos Vortex is up there with my favorite track in KIU, and Chaos Vortex is easily one of my top Chapters in the entire game. It's basically one long boss rush to kill a single, stubborn, bug.
I really do miss Uprising it was a genuine 3DS gem. Amazing OST, top tier characters and writing, and as weird as the controls were the gameplay was solid. Also lighting battle is one of those big fan favorite tracks from the game for how hard it goes, also if my memory serves the level it plays in goes absolutely crazy during the flight section when this plays.
Even outside of Smash, Sakurai really does have a habit of bringing so many people together with what he does. Man has so much respect and such a huge reputation that he can move mountains single-handedly in this industry.
Kid Icarus Uprising is to this day my favorite game of all time. It's the result of the collaboration of some many different minds and artists, that guided by Masahiro Sakurai, the mind behind freaking Smash Bros, were able to give a new life to this dormant Nintendo IP. The team put an incredible amount of effort into any aspect of this game: the almost infinite customizable gameplay, the writing of characters and story, the presentation ans specticle of the levels, the marketing that involved anime shorts and collectable cards, and as you stated, the music. The three tracks you listened so far, are all used during the "flight secionts" of the game: basically parts of levels "on rail" where you fly around fighting enemies and experiencing events of the story. THey are basically epic rollercoaster section, and the music accompany you during the various sections, changing as you progress through it It is a great sound track that while is able to stand on its own , works way better in context. The game also features more "traditional" music, played on the "land sections" of the levels: those loop and are overall shorter and less bombastic, but still great If you are curious, I may suggest to look up some of these: Aurum Island: th-cam.com/video/iy_Hi4f63Jg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n9INUzscQQyRSG1I The Reset Bomb Forest: th-cam.com/video/TLYPeC-J5Ek/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SwErj-Tfc4dQBeUW Theme of THE DOG: th-cam.com/video/MLGERR8Rzqk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=V7b_udXBg2yYrGUL Magnus Theme: th-cam.com/video/6_rZLBr0gj0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ERpxk9vLfQkB-IoA Sorry, I am just happy to see more people knowing about this nieche game. Keep up the always amazing work, Jesse :D
Kid Icarus: Uprising was directed by Masahiro Sakurai, who also happens to be the creator of Kirby, and the creator and director for every Smash Bros. game. Yeah. Sakurai is easily one of the most respected figures in the game industry, he's a legend as far as I'm concerned. The quality of his work is truly astounding, and it all shines through beautifully in Uprising. Uprising is still one of my favourite games of all time and it's an absolute shame that the series seems to have went right back to being dormant again, despite selling so well. Oh yeah, fun fact, Pit's modern design originated not in his own games, but in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii! Funny how that worked out...
Been a whopping three games in this series: Kid Icarus on the NES in 1986, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters on the Game Boy in 1991, and Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS in 2012. Very obscure franchise. When given the task of creating a game for the 3DS launch, Sakurai chose to reboot Kid Icarus. He must have gotten a crazy budget for it. Also, Hirokazu Tanaka composed the music for the original Kid Icarus! The original Metroid, too!
Kid Icarus Uprising is a very VERY good game, easily top 3 3DS games and very fun even just to replay. As for its characters, it stars Pit (kid with the angel wings as you eventually got lol) who is guided by the Goddess Palutena (whose also in Smash lol) to defeat the evil Medusa whose been resurrected from the original NES release… and is technically a very elaborate and completely overhauled version of Kid Icarus 2, but better in every way. As some other mentioned, mix between on rails shooters sections at the start of levels and actual action shooter sections. All really really solid and a big recommend if you can ever get a hand on a copy. Or use the “totally official PC version” of, if you catch my drift.
The gameplay behind these songs: A flying on rails shooting section, kinda like Sin and Punishment. "Flying section" songs don't loop and for lore reasons usually last less than 5 minutes.
Kid Icarus: Uprising does have a very stellar soundtrack. Lightning Battle is one of my favourites in the game. Though honestly when it comes to a legendary all-star cast of Japanese videogame composers, I don't think you can beat Half-Minute Hero: The Second Coming. The 1st game has great music, but the 2nd game knocks it out of the park. Honestly amazing how such a small niche game that not even fans of the 1st game know exists has such an amazing cast of composers.
One if my favorite games ever. So many great tracks in the game and such a gem of a game. Too bad we still have like 10 more years before a sequel(according to the characters at least). This chapter is a fun one with Phosphora and the Lightning Temple.
Kid Icarus Uprising is indeed an underrated game. Easily one of my top 10, but unfortunately it was difficult to play for people who have wrist issues or large hands. It'd easily be perfect on a console like the Switch.
Being in Smash is not an indicator of how Nintendo treats an IP. Kid Icarus only has 3 games. There's Kid Icarus for the NES in '86, Of Myths and Monsters in '91 for the GameBoy, and Uprising in 2012 for the 3DS. I think the Ice Climbers might even just have one game outside of the Smash Bros series...
Man, I remember the years after Uprising came out. People wouldn't shup up about it and fans thought Kid Icarus was going to be Nintendo's next big "new" franchise. That uh, didn't happen.
I love how you keep saying they care about the IP and then its like 12 years since the last game XD. I think a lot of the games some devs are super passionate about are one offs or "limited era". Like F-Zero for exampo.
I was really disappointed by this game... I enjoyed the original NES Kid Icarus game and was hoping this would extend from that, but it was all just combat. I stopped playing on the third level... ...but it came with a nice 3DS stand that I still use at least.

The game also features more "traditional" music, played on the "land sections" of the levels: those loop and are overall shorter and less bombastic, but still great

Sorry, I am just happy to see more people knowing about this nieche game.
PLEASE check out more Kid Icarus: Uprising tracks
This is in my top 3 games of all. The soundtrack is masterful, all of it
The gameplay behind these songs: A flying on rails shooting section, kinda like Sin and Punishment.
Kid Icarus mentioned.
Oh it'd be nice if the series had more entries, at least port this one.
I finally got one I recommended.
Kid icarus uprising got such baaaangers
Yes more kid Icarus
This game is in desperate need of a remake so bad it’s not even funny. Hands down for me best 3DS game
I love how you keep saying they care about the IP and then its like 12 years since the last game XD. I think a lot of the games some devs are super passionate about are one offs or "limited era". Like F-Zero for exampo.
You should definitely react to some random songs from this game.
please react to track Wars End its the final boss theme and really good for a DS nintendo game
I was really disappointed by this game... I enjoyed the original NES Kid Icarus game and was hoping this would extend from that, but it was all just combat. I stopped playing on the third level...
...but it came with a nice 3DS stand that I still use at least.
