It was like mostly mercedes in that town, but long time ago, a lot of people went to work in germany after ww2, and came back with Merc(it wasnt like today, you can buy 100 different cars, and back then u had limited options, merc, vw, audi, opel...
So you buy the best one....

I am a local, and to see what Mercedes meant to gasarbaiters is a tragic example of immigrant story. It is a story how these people seek the meaning in something (to proove themself and others) as they spent their lifes in hard work often finding themselves not integrated in Germany neither when they were returning back home when they werent the same part of community as before. Great points and observations in the video with how these people are aginst imigration when they were imigrants themself... However, generalisations should not be made as some of the speakers and their beliefs in nazi germany are not of whole comunity.

You had to cross the border (BiH) and visit the village Vojnici. There, there is ~900-1000 MB cars and trucks and there are only 100 houses. THAT place is insane. Imotski has a decent number of MB vehicles but nothing compared to some areas across the border.

I got 4 one more one the way had 3 more but they were wrecked so thats like 7 MB's in 10 years time and yes i live in the centre of Imotski all my neighbours have one or two in the town area there are aproximately 1000 households more than 800 have one or two MB's most of the cars are oldtimers or collection models that stay in garage so i believe there are more than 3k MB's in the imotski because we have 10 bigger villages around the town and i dont know anyone who lives in these villages that doesnt own a mercedes. These are my insights and some facts that i am sure of.
But thanks for advertising my hometown its a nice documentary, come back when the statue is finished you will see what we are talking about 😉

...not true...they bought them, because of quality of the car, many cars produced in 1980'ies,Mercedes precisely are still been driven...they have more then 1 mill of mileage...Yugo would fall apart, because of the roads in the past, weren't that good as they were today...they were rocky roads,no asphalt or concrete...it wasn't like today when modern Croatia builded more roads and highways in less then 30 years, then both of Yugoslavia did in 68 years..😊😊
Mercedes was just built quality in those days and they could afford it...obvious they like it,city is known for Mercedes...not Yugos, which is maybe the worst car ever built...😊😊😊

Most of the cars you saw are 20 years old or older.
Oltimers you saw are well preserved examples and doesn`t represent a usual car in Imotski.
Mercedeses are long ago outnumbered with VAG family of cars (VW, Skoda, Audi, Seat) wich offer good enought quality for fraction of price (for running them and keeping them on road) and even 20-25 years old models aren't that rusty so they will be roadworthy for quite a while.
Also as you figured out by yourself, almost nothing you heard from your presenters is true. Few of pepole I saw on video are extreme right wing, while few of them are extreme left wing. If you were offered with other presenter, there is a good chance that you would see marxist books, Tito pictures and simmilar stuff

    • @luna500rr

@@LennartWorldWideWhat I'm from Imotski. It is just a Legend. It has to do with the culture of people here. People like to own stuff in Imotski, so they don't like to lease a car. It has to do with intermittent wealth of people, as many of people are full of money for some time and after that they are almost broke for a while, as they work on seasonal work or outside (like Germany). Buying a car is next more expensive thing you could buy after a flat or home. That is why you wouldn't like to spend your savings to a car that breaks down.
Old Mercedes diesel cars like W123, W201 and W124 were for a long time better investment than any other used car or new one, as they held their value for long time, didn't break down, required only mild service like oil brakes bulbs and tires to be roadworthy. At the same time they were much more safe in crash event than any other car you could buy for same money, drive better, were more comfortable and so on.
But for a long time this just isn't case any more. Mercedeses went down in quality (or they are just more cost optimized to last for a warranty period), they rust and break down when they are old and cheap enough for our people to buy them. This is why you don't see them any more but rather Golf's, Passats, Octavias and similar VAG cars. If you want to see what younger people drive and are more passionate for, just look at the towns car clubs. There is VW club, BMW club and Mercedes club. Compare number of people, cars and age of them in car meets. Compare car meets and try to figure which one is organized by tourist agency, and which two by true petrol-heads

I'd say it was around the war when MB population peaked.
Back then MB might as well have made up half of all cars in the area.
And political extremes arent really that important to focus on - its same as anywhere else in the world, it's just that people are more free to express their political opinions without being Gestapo'd for having 'wrong' opinions like you'd be in Western Europe, so they're more open to sharing those with others.
