question: is it theatre Thursday already?

What I get from my vocal coach is that vocal vibrato is what happens when you have enough breath support and singing in a good position. I have developed a vibrato but usually in high notes and low notes but never the comfort zone and its been 8 months of training. It takes time to fully develop so don't get discouraged if you can't get it right away. Anyway, if you are doing vibrato correctly, you shouldn't be able to feel it. It should feel "effortless". Sometimes, you won't even hear it yourself. It's helpful to record your self while practicing and to get a vocal coach so they can help you with their own methods of developing vibrato. A good tip is to keep your chin parallel to the floor, breathe (deep breaths, in and out with your diaphragm), and make sure you are FULLY opening your mouth. The way you can imagine it is to open your mouth as much as Freddie Mercury does. Make sure your molars are raised. Keep the back of your neck tall ( I know this sounds weird but I totally recommend it). Keep your knees bent so that there isn't any tension in your body. If you feel tension in your neck, stop immediately and try lip trills. We all know that youtube is a great source so try some exercise with breathing and working your diaphragm. Trust me, it's not impossible but it is difficult. You just gotta..... WAIT FOR IT!

I need some advice. So, a while ago, our high school did a show. I was dead-set on getting a role. At the time, it was my absolute dream role. I researched for hours and hours about the show, wrote down character traits and did a deep character analysis, chose a perfect song and monologue, had an outfit picked out that was PERFECT for the character I was auditioning for, and practiced like crazy. I was so prepared for that audition. I was a sophomore at the time, and had done many plays before. Anyway, there was a senior who also wanted the same role as me. She was planning on using her solo from choir to audition, but found out the day of she was not allowed to do that, and ended up singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow (this was for Morticia btw), and her monologue from The Laramie Project, the show we were both currently in. I am confident I did well at my audition. I have strong vocals, and worked very hard on my monologue. For callbacks, it was only me and her. I believe I did well at callbacks too. She ended up getting the role, and I got a part in the chorus, as the Addams Family has a small main cast. My band director later told me that the director believed I did very well, but "you know, seniority matters in this situation." I was pretty broken up about it. i had worked so hard, and I lost my role due to seniority. In my school, all I hear is seniority seniority seniority, and it is driving me up the wall. The seniors even say that in the makeup room, they get to sit in the chairs, and the underclassmen have to sit on the floor. HOW do I deal with seniority in my school when it feels so hopeless??
Edit: I am actually going into my senior year now, but how do I deal with everyone else claiming seniority when I know it isn't right?

I have the same problem/am in the same boat. I’d say from own experience tell the youngest they’ll get their time and it’ll be soon! Say that You have been in the same boat you had the same problem and agree with them! Say you know i don’t fully agree, and also try not to be a jerk. I always find that the older years think they have “fans” and people love them or whatever and sometimes older years can be rude sometimes, younger years may be worried about this so make it your responsibility to be a good re model and just be a nice person :)

    I need theatre advice on:
Being in character more. Like actually becoming the character
    AND
How to do accents. If you can, make a video on it!

Queen Vicky to be in character more I typically write long character bios and use templates I find online to create them. Then I vividly before bed when I’m just kinda making scenarios up I do it using my character I’ve created, so for example part of a character bio I’ve done was “what was my immediate location” for a certain scene. It was a quiet coffee shop (obviously with more detail) so I imagined what would happen if there was a screaming child and how the character I’ve developed further would react. Would they get upset, continue on like nothing’s happening, talk trash, roll their eyes, leave... you get the idea. I find that typically helps me get into way more

My local theater almost went bankrupt and was bought out by another local theater. Now everything is different, the people, the culture. It's been really confusing with the new influx of people, and the culture of the my favorite theater is gone. Do you have any advice?

Chespin907 if you need to go somewhere else to feel comfortable, don’t feel bad for leaving. This happened to my dance company a couple years ago. Find where the energy feels right, even if you have to drive a little further, or start all over, what should feel right is within you and you alone.

    • @chespin9078

Chespin907 I feel that. I had so many friends that stayed at that company. But for me it was best to see what else was out there to bring me more joy and make more connections and feel more comfortable to improve. You do what feels right to you.

Oh boy I feel this. If possible, maybe look into other theaters? If that's not an option for whatever reason, I'll concede that things probably won't be how they used to before. But if you try focus on the art, the friends you still have, and the fact that you know based on past experience that theatre is not always like this, it might help you cope. Hope it all works out ❤

make your priorities. personally i think school should always be number one and i’m sure your parents would think that too. sorry i sound old but haha always make sure you’re getting g enough sleep that helps with being able to balance everything and if you notice yourself getting super tired maybe try taking one less dance class this year. and i don’t know what your theatre teacher is like but if you’re super tired and really just need that one night to get yourself back into the game ask your teacher if you could get one night off because you’re worried you’re getting sick or just need a mental break. but always make sure you are doing your school work because even though theatre and dance are amazing you still want to make sure you get good grades because when you start looking at colleges they’ll want to see that you’re a hard worker and get good grades. they just want to see if you’re a good person. but like i said make your priorities and always make sure what you’re doing is good for you mentally and physically because truly you are number one. sorry that was long but i wish you the best love!

Don’t be afraid to drop out of certain activities. If there’s something that’s really gonna be problematic with your schedule, don’t audition or don’t continue it. I know that hurts a lot, but your mental health is more important than anything else.

What's funny is that when I applied for my theatre master's last year, only 3 out of the 7 universities I applied to gave me an audition. Out of the 3, I went in person to 2 of them because the 3rd university asked for a 2 person scene instead. Living in the Caribbean, I couldn't ask my scene partner to spend $400 just to help me audition for 1 school, so instead I sent them a video of the audition scene. Long story short, the universities I went in-person to audition didn't even give me a callback and the university I sent the video to accepted me. I'm starting there this September. 😁😁😁😁😁😁 Based on this experience, I'm putting a bit more faith on video auditions.

The that director doesn't know what he's talking about. I did the show Pretty Theft and I was Allegra. Allegra has 2 monologues each a page. It took me most of the rehearsals (so about a month) to memorize both of them. Monologues can be difficult for people and this director needs to understand it.

For me, one of the things that's really helping me get over my hatred for my singing voice (still working on it), is, like she said, working on it, but also, exposure to it. Like, I can hate it when I hear it on a tape the first time, but by the seventh or eighth time, I might not hate it as much. I don't know if that helps anyone else, but listening to it, trying new things and singing stuff you love, and stuff you are comfortable singing really helps me.

Something to keep in mind when you come across an audition that allows live and video auditions. The casting director won't favor the live auditions over the video ones. A year ago I was behind the table at an audition for part of an internship and experience. The show needed 6 boys and that's how many came to the audition. The first boy that auditioned was great. We all agreed he had an excellent monologue and was able to get an emotion out of most of us there. But he did not get in. He didn't have any conflicts with the play but one other boy auditioned through video and got in. I asked the casting director why he chose that boy over the other. His reply was "he had emotion and character but he had blonde hair and the other one has brown" A year later I went to see a show put on by the same company and I saw the blonde boy as the lead. When I recognized him I got insanely happy that he was still performing and didn't quit. After the show I came up to him and congratulated him on the performance. We had a short conversation and I found out that he didn't even know that the hair color was the reason he didn't get in and he knew how many boys auditioned for the other play. I haven't seen him around since but I still remember that day of auditions and casting.

I had a similar situation happen to me in high school where I was in a musical and had a solo duet with a guy. And I was super anxious and just not confident with my singing and the teacher stops playing the song and in front of the whole cast she shouts at me “why can’t you be confident and sing like him (my singing partner)?”. Basically making my young self feel like I instantly wasn’t even good enough to do what I truly wanted to do. 3yrs later I still struggle with performing and feeling like I’m good enough; but I know my potential and what I’m worth as a performer. Teachers are supposed to lift you up, not let you down.

I have a few things I need advice on:
1.I’m playing Archie in 13 the musical and I have a stage kiss, my FIRST stage kiss, MY FIRST EVER KISS IS ON STAGE!! And I know the director told me it doesn’t really count, but either way it’s happening, and it has to be REAL. What In the world do I do??
    2. There’s this one girl in a few theater groups I participate in and we are the same casting type, and I mean we look almost identical. and it feels like she always gets roles over me, (however I have gotten casted in something she wasn’t even called back for, that made me feel AMAZING!) but we can do the same things, same vocal part, same dance abilities, same body features, same hair and eye color, and we both wear glasses. question!!!! im doing a show this summer (young frankenstein!) in a studio that's an average of 95 degrees allll the time. as soon as we add costumes and an audience and lights and makeup, that may take it up to 100 or more. besides drinking literally all the water in the entire world, what can we do to take care of ourselves? what would you say is the best thing to eat before shows/do before shows to take care of our bodies? another unrelated question: what's the best way to get into character for a person that's *really old*?
thank you!! sending love and good vibes your way always!!

Thank you for addressing friends and drama!! Something similar happened to me where it was both me and my friends being really toxic for one another, and I really needed this as a reminder. Another thing to add on too: if they're in the same theatre department, leave the drama/spite (if you feel any, of course) at the door. We all work for the same goal once we reach rehearsal: to put on a good show and I don't think drama (in the sense of gossip and cliques) helps at all. Some people may not do that, but at the same time, some people do and I tend to think those people are some of the best performers I've seen. Just a tid bit of advice from me to y'all

I’d love some advice on not taking things personally in the theater world, such as not getting a role, notes from directors, etc.
I must admit, I’ve been feeling VERY down on my abilities as a performer lately because I was put in ensemble in a show with a company that had cast me in a larger role last year. It’s not simply about being in ensemble because their is NO shame in that, ensemble is so incredibly important, and I have been having such a blast in the rehearsals we’ve had so far. The fact is i’ve been performing for nearly a decade and have had another year of both acting and voice training since I had that featured role and I just can’t shake the feeling that I’ve let everyone down and am not nearly as talented as I’ve been told in the past. I so want to let it go but I honestly have barely any outlets for validation outside of theater and my self confidence (which was poor to begin with) has taken a critical hit. What can I do to lift this weight off my shoulders and enjoy the show like I so want to do? Thanks so much if you read this.

It's funny. I just got back from karaoke and I see Kath uploaded a video titled "I Hate My Singing Voice".
When I heard my voice through the speaker, it did sound wrong. But it seems like everyone else thought it sounded good. Also, I made a new friend who showered me with praise on my singing. And apparently she was quite surprised when I told her that I'm not a native English speaker (I'm Swedish).
If anyone is curious, I sang:
    "Confrontation" from "Jekyll & Hyde"
"Hellfire" from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
"Settle For Me" from "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"

VERY LOADED QUESTION: i’m in highschool and i go to an all-girl’s school, and i’m always the tallest one in the room, so i feel like the director might not see me as the right fit for a specific disney princess in a musical, which is a role i really think i fit and could bring a new take to this character. however, of course there is going to be competition for the role with girls who have similar backgrounds in musical theater as i do and are shorter than me. are my suspicions and worries valid and what more could i do to ensure my role other than “preparation”?

This probably won't be seen, but when you talked about how to peruse acting/musical theatre, you said voice lessons once a week for an hour. I just started doing just that a few weeks ago. It's terrifying but my only regret is that I really wish I started sooner. It's so worth it! Also, is it even possible for me to get a career in musical theatre/theatre in general if I'm already 16 and just started voice lessons and my parents don't support me at all? Perusing this is my dream but it's also so many people's dreams and it's so hard to get into without support from parents. If it doesn't work out my parents will think "you never should have done that" But how will I ever know if I don't try? I know this was a long comment, if anyone sees this, thanks for reading!

As someone who wants to pursue theatre, I would say if you know in your heart that theatre is meant for you, go for it. But you have to be 100% sure. Theatre isn’t for the weak hearted and you have to be ready to be rejected consistently and beat down and worked to exhaustion mentally and physically. You have to be ready to put everything on the line, but in the end it’s all worth it. If you’re only 16 you still have PLENTY of time to work and improve yourself. I mean, Tommy Bracco started dancing when he was 14 and now he’s originated two broadway characters and that’s just one example! Definitely keep working to improve your skills and find out what makes you, you! Also, sit down and have a serious conversation with your parents, but in the end, you know what’s best/right for you! I hope it all works out, love!!!

Hey Kat... and anyone reading this.
I had a horrible audition for my school's BFA program.... I was naive and didn't prepare well and had been in and out of the hospital a month before the audition. Needless to say I made a fool out of myself, but I am glad it happened because it opened my eyes to my inexperience, my pride, and my need to learn.
HOWEVER... will this forever damage my image in the minds of the people I auditioned for? I got into the BA program, and they'll be my teachers and my judges for when I audition for the BFA program again. Now I'm determined to be the MOST IMPROVED in my class, and I will work as long and hard as is necessary.... but even if I show talent and improvement and commitment... will my image still be damaged in their minds? Please, anyone can reply, but please be frankly honest with me.:)

    • @jessicamcpeak5737
      @jessicamcpeak5737 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think if they even remember that audition next year (which, they might not even remember it), they'll recognize how much you've improved in the year, which will put you in a good place because they'll see you can and will improve. If they're good judges they'll see you for what you are now and not for a singular past experience. Good luck this year!

Hi! I have only been in a couple shows, but the few shows where I have had a part that was not ensemble, I have played the (kind of stupid), funny character who helps the villain. I have watched many videos of yours on how to get into character, and things like that to prepare for the show I am in, but I feel like it mostly only applies to characters who are more serious, and characters who are not frequently comedic. Could you do a video on how to prepare for characters like that? It would really help, especially since I do not have very much experience acting. Also, I know you are a soprano, and don’t usually belt, but I am an alto, but I can not belt, so if you could do a video on that too that would help as well.

Guys I need help! I just stared my theater camp yesterday and were doing once open a mattress. The cast list came out a week or so ago and I was/am( not sure which) playing the Nightlingale( I think that how u spell it) and when we were all going down to start rehearsal my directors asked me if I could go into the voicestudio and they told me that the girl playing Lady Larken gave up the role and they want me to play it. For anyone who doesn’t know the show Lady Larken is a principle role and has a descent amount of lines, which is why I’m stressed! Had I know this was going to happen I would of started memorizing my lines a week ago! It’s exciting(and a little sad- which I will get to in a minute) but I’m STRESSED! It’s sad because the ensemble numbers in this show are really fun and I’m a pretty good dancer(one of the best in camp- only because there is like no one in camp who has formal dance training like I do because in reality I’m a terrible dancer) and I was going to get to do a bunch of soft shooing(tap dancing without stop shoes) and a bunch of other cool stuff! So I’m bittersweet, and stressed! Help me!
P.S- Sorry this rant was so long lol!

Advice?- I usually do two musicals one at my community theatre and one at my school. This year they might be at the same time and I don’t know what to do. My community theatre is doing frozen and I would love to do it plus I’m super close to all my friends there. We’re getting a new school theatre teacher so idk if we’re doing a fall play or musical and idk when it will be. But last year I did Chicago at school and it was like the best experience ever so I really wanna do my school show. If I commit to frozen it will before school auditions and idek if I would get in bc I’m an underclassman and it’s really hard especially if it’s a play with a smaller cast. So if I don’t do frozen and I pick school I could be left with nothing. Sorry that was a lot lol but what do u think I should do.
