  • 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Joe West ejected Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Borucki and pitching coach-not-manager Pete Walker after Borucki hit Kevin Kiermaier with the first pitch of Tampa Bay's 8th inning. Report: www.closecalls...
Two days earlier, Kiemaier upon being tagged out to end a half inning on a play at the plate picked up a scouting card dropped by Toronto and took the card to the Rays dugout. The Blue Jays were reportedly upset after the incident occurred and Rays manager Kevin Cash issued an apology to Toronto skipper Charlie Montoyo.
Warnings had not previously been issued.

Hopefully that pitch settled the dispute with him picking up cards that don't belong to him. Question for any trained umpires reading this:
You’re approached between innings by the manager of a team in the Blue Jays situation from the Monday game. He explains that an opposing player had picked up a scouting card which had fallen out of the uniform of one of his players during the course of play. The ersatz Blue Jays had asked the opposing team to return the card, and the opponents had refused to do so. He is asking you to intercede and require the opposing team to return the scouting card. Do you do so?

[Our hypothetical manager doesn’t think the situation is specifically covered in the rulebook, but knows that umpires have the authority to make rulings in such situations even if he can’t cite the exact rule (which I believe is 8.01 (c) ) ]

As a centerfielder he plays the entire outfield as though he doesn't trust his left or his right fielder. Stealing Toronto's Scouting Card, and then refusing to give it back is what got him a 93 mph pitch to his back. I sat in center field yesterday first row along the homerun wall. In the pre-game practice a ball landed a few feet away. Our entire section were asking Kiermaier for the ball, even waiting five minutes for him to come over and give the ball away to someone in our seating section. The dude pretended he was going to give the ball away to fans, and then simply walked away with the ball telling fans he didn't owe them crap. He was either in a bad mood, attitude already pre-game or Kiermaier is just plain a jerk. Randy Arozarena, the Tampa Bay Left Fielder is a whole different person. He was throwing balls into the stands for fans the entire day. Randy is a class act. Kiermaier is an arrogant ass. Some bad Karma came back to Kiermaier today.

I understand they want to let the old umpires still umpire because it’s a respectable thing to do but we all know when you get older your eyes get worse, hence why you have to start going for eye exams to renew your drivers license. Once you hit a certain age I’m sorry but you just can’t call balls and strikes behind the plate anymore.

Sorry, but isn’t every bean ball intentional? So every plunking deserves a suspension then?
