    This mess lies at the feet of Marquez and his crew. They blew the Donaldson HBP out of proportion. NOBODY expected ejections there. Not even the Yankees. And their overreaction lost them control of this game.
    Umpire conferences after HBP were supposed to allow things to cool, instead, this conference was a lesson in confirmation bias where some or all of these 4 invented a problem that very likely didn’t actually exist. Not a good look for this crew.

    • @rayray4192
      @rayray4192 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The primary reason for crew conference after H.B.P. is to take the decision out of the hands of one umpire, and eliminate the need to make an immediate decision.

    In this case, rightly or wrongly, I think the Umps turned it from a "tense situation" with the second hit-by-pitch, into an "angry" situation, for both sides, but especially for the Blue Jays. With Donaldson, going by the video, I think Warnings would have sufficed. Montoya wouldn't have been happy, but I think that would have sufficed. Then, after the Blue Jay pitcher got ejected for hitting the batter, anything close, like that later pitch you showed, it's just going to piss off the Blue Jays if they see, what they perceive, as unequal treatment by the Umps.
    Long story short, rightly or wrongly, I think the Umps turned a tense situation into just short of a storm, between those teams.

    I haven't done the research on these 4 umpires, but this is one of those situations where and why it always hurts when players (even at the HS level) don't umpire after their careers are over. Instead you have persons who never played the game and don't understand the nuances arbitrating the "unwritten" aspect of it. No one on either side thought that was intentional - 3-3 game, 6th inning, 0-1 count. But 4 MLB Umpires who have made it through 10-15 years of training did.
    So with that being said, I would have to agree with Lindsay there HAS to be more to this. Somewhere those officials were told by MLB about something else going on or they had other information we don't. I hope. Man, I hope.

    • @a_doggo
      @a_doggo ปีที่แล้ว

      It's obvious for an entire umpire's career - either you're effortless reading where plays, hits, and throws are going, knowing instinctively which players are backing up where - or you're reciting the manual and have a bag of flash cards in your trunk and probably won't ever get to the point of calling a quality game without a "real" guy/gal on the plate. I have no clue how the non ball-players even survive calling ball above the HS level - because they basically don't. They'd lose their heads in the first inning of an NCAA-level game. No shot.

  • @douglassepic9030

    A few things: First- the "I'm done with you" hand waive by the crew chief when ejecting Garcia was demeaning and unprofessional. The level of umpire unprofessionalism needs to be corrected by MLB in these situations.
    Secondly, when ejecting the pitching coach, the crew chief, again, nearly hit Montoyo in the face.
    I typically defend umpires and believe that they have every right to engage in heated arguments with managers/coaches/players. And I'm tired of hearing people say that unpires are "ruining the game". (There's a lot ruining the game, including the players' union, the umpires' union, large market owners' greed, no salary caps, no profit sharing, etc...)
    Nonetheless, the level of general professionalism anong umpires needs to step up. For example, what happened with in the recent Bumgarner - Dan Bollino confrontation is far below an acceptable level of decency and professionalism.
    Likewise, the handling of this situation falls short of the mark.

  • @pfiechtner
    @pfiechtner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Amazing that you can have a crew of four umpires talk it over and somehow not one of them had the common sense to assess the situation and realize it couldn’t possibly be intentional. Garcia sequences his slider and 4/2-seamer off each other (just check baseball savant to see how he works both edges of the plate with them). After the first pitch sinker, a fastball in (that got away) to set up another slider away makes a lot more sense than plunking a guy to put the go ahead run on base in the 6th inning. The whole crew blew this one.

      @@bogie7311 pitchers that are mad about homers don’t throw first pitch sinkers on the black to the next batter and THEN suddenly decide to bean them, and you don’t intentionally put the go-ahead run on base in a tie game...
      Garcia pitches inside with questionable control at times, but he hasn’t had a reputation for headhunting and he doesn’t have any particular history with Donaldson. The whole umpiring crew suffered from a case of scenario fulfillment here, egged on by the Yankee dugout, and decided that they saw something that wasn’t actually there

    • @bernier42
      @bernier42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you need to check Baseball Savant, that’s not “common sense”, that’s research. And a heck of a lot of intel for umps to have on every player on the field. And needless to say, umps aren’t consulting websites and databases in real time on the field.

MLB umpires should come into the game already aware of something as simple as hard in soft away sinker/slider sequencing, because it’s incredibly common at every level of the sport, rather than immediately assuming intent just because a fastball runs inside.
      I meant that if anyone here in the comments doesn’t believe me when I say how Garcia uses his pitches, you can go check to confirm I’m not making it up

    This was just straight up incompetence by an umpiring crew. It was the 2nd pitch of the at bat, the game was tied, the balls had been terrible all night, and Donaldson, who is known to overreact to things, didn't even react. And considering the 3 other umpires are relatively inexperience in the League, this falls on Marquez, which to be fair doesn't surprise me, he seems like a fine umpire when not doing Blue Jays games, but when he does Blue Jays games he becomes incompetent, I'm not one for conspiracy theories but it seems to happen more than enough to be a coincidence.

    Big mistakes from the umps honestly, Donaldson is beloved by the Jays organization so no one is ever going to throw at him intentionally. Also, 3-3 game and if it was intentional he would’ve thrown at him with the first pitch of the at bat. I usually come to this page for the real view, and I like that defense of the umpires happens here. It definitely always gives a different viewpoint to Jomboy ("Uh, I don't know what the rule is, but I think the umpire screwed up." -Seems to be a line in every one of his videos.) Occasionally, however, it does seem like you go overboard trying to explain the umpire's actions away. This was a bad call to eject. (From a Braves fan. No dog in this fight.)

      In their defense, they did say thst they thought the umpires were wrong

      @@critter2 I had a viewpoint and I expressed it. I thought too much of the video was used to say "Well, they might have done it because of this reason, or that reason. Maybe they did have a good reason." While I appreciate avoiding bashing on the umpires, I thought the video would be much better with a short and simple, "We don't know what other information they had that may have changed the call, but from outside appearances, I believe this hit by pitch was not intentional." Overall, I love the content here and hope that Lindsay keeps up the great work!

Then the latest scandal about increasing RPM by using unknown substances is growing and ugly talk is leaking out. Could it be that some of this HBP relates to hard-to-handle balls and a drive to increase speed of rotation? Let's step out of the box of payback and send-'em-a-message for just one second. The pitching coach and players should be able to argue without being restrained as well. As long as they aren’t trying to attack the umpire. That’s the way it used to be and it should be like that now. Yelling at them to get out while they are being forcibly restrained is a bad look for umpires. This is for both teams and umpires, just let them have their say and they’ll usually storm off. No need to grab them and hold them back especially the coaches. I’ve seen coaches that argue more calmly than managers.
