@@BrennenHinojosa Sold it earlier this year, never had a problem with it. I needed more drag for the type of offshore fish I was targeting. Ended up getting a Shimano Twin Power 10000 SW. I lost some line capacity but drag went up to 55 lbs. I’ll get another one cause I miss that size reel. I hate I sold it but a buddy wanted a nice reel.
I fished the VR200 in the raritan bay this year pretty heavily and this reel stood up to the test! Never using another reel, have it on a 12' tsunami trophy 2 and it is butter ! #raritanbay #newcapecodcanal
I've got a Penn Authority and fish it from a yak, it gets abused with salt water and sand, so far it's holding up better than my slammers, but some of the black finish around the spool arm is bubbling, my Slammer drag seized with salt, but I can get my Penn's serviced in NZ, I'll need to check if anyone services Van Staals down here, but it looks perfect for a yak fishermen going through surf.
Interesting thing with the Authority, I've seen that with older battles, but not the newer nicer reels. The Van Staals are pretty incredible reels and they sound perfect for what you do. The simple all metal, no frills body is bullet proof, as is the design and gearing in them.
@@tailwateroutfitters A chance follow up...I've just dropped my Penn Authority off for a service, the main bearing has ceased up, so no more Penn's for me I'm afraid, I'm getting a Van Staal for my yak fishing...I've used Penn's for many years, I expected more from this Authority:(
Never had issues with the Vr series. Besides basic maintenance no issues at all. Lighter is a plus for me, no clue why Penn still provides options to swap handle left to right ?
I love my penn slammers but if im going to spend more money on a spinning reel than a slammer its the van staal all day for me. Just for the useless beauty of the van staal.
Which one You would recommend this reel for shore jigging 20-100gr jigs? For around same budget I guess there is Twinpower and Certate but on bigger fish like 10-20kg+ having an all metal reel is a plus also vr150 is around 480gr on same size the others are 750-800gr which would be your choice in between them ?
Since fully sealed reels are around 550 do you think it’s better to buy cheaper 150ish dollar reels so that if they do break you can just swap them out for another one? Or do u think buying a semi sealed reel like a salt x which is around 300 is the way to go?
It depends on how you fish and how hard you are on your gear. Personally, I baby my gear a little bit, so I would rather spend the few extra bucks because I know that it will last
My suggestion is buy a Saragossa. Bought a 6k two years ago, dropped in the sand, has fished plenty of salt. Have had no issues and it’s buttery smooth. If you’re not fishing it underwater it will be fine.
@@kadekeyes9003 I bought two vsx both brand spanking new. A 150 I used for my early to middle spring in the back bays and a 200 for majority of everywhere else. the main body seal on the 150 failed at the same time my anti reverse failed. Then my 200 center shaft started moving way more than it supposed to left to right and I got water in my reel because of it this happened while fighting a fish. I reached out to van staal they did nothing for me. Also the aluminum on the 200 has pitting on it when I didn't even use it for more than 6 months and yes I wash my reels off with fresh water after use in salt water. I found myself a USA made 200 used however it's been flawless. Stay away from Chinese made van staals that's my advice
For ipx6 with adequate service after fishing reels would be there long after we all gone , the seals on authority almost more than enough for 99% world wide anglers , authority raised the par for castibility with their slow osc n curvy spool lip , still not the best (spool length a bit short) , smoother than van staal , authority is a winner no doubts , i have 4500 one , lately it becomes my mainly driver instead of my stella 6000sw , buy it before penn change their price 😂
The Van Staal shown is the "VR" series, which has the same sealing as the Authority, and is close to the same price. You are thinking of the Van Staal "VS" series, which is totally sealed and can be cranked under water, but is another $250 more expensive.
I’m sorry but there’s NO spinning reel worth 900$-1000$ I’ll buy a piscifun carbon x2 for 70$ or a pfluger president reel and it’ll last just as long and if it brake I’m not out 900$
I’ll keep my VR150, I use it for lakes, river, inshore and offshore, never failed in 7 years.
How’s it going still? I’m thinking about getting one

Can't say my VR has gotten smoother over the years. Maybe need more use
..haha. but loving my new Salstist MQ 4000.
Van Staal guys crack me up. Never seen one used to catch a 200lb tuna. Authority will all day. 60 lbs of drag your vsx dont got that
Van Staal. Tried and tested through the years.
Van Staal for me just for the aluminum bliss!:)
What size is the authority?
I couldn't find that anywhere either. Should be in the title or the very beginning of the video.
Van Staal all day!! Left and right handed models, come with bailless conversion kit, and light. I have the little vr50. (25lbs drag).
Penn Authority

sounds like a great setup! These reels are pretty bulletproof
WHEY WILL STAND UP YO HARD USE, SAME SS GEARING AS IN THE VS AND ZB@@tailwateroutfitters

Hey come on buddy us lefties need to fish too 🤣
left hand wind is a US thing.
5500 Authority?
I somewhat didn't have good experience with VR first version due to anti-reverse broke.
THATS AN EASY FIX PUT A NEW ONE IN AND YOU'R BACK FISHING.
Nobody will do a penn torque two review can you do it please and maybe vs it with a reel it’s level ?

you are showing the reel but what size is it?
Van staal if you want your anti reverse to go as soon as you buy it

Which has the better / smoother drag. VS drags were notorious for being bad
We’ve never heard that from customers, but the Penn feels pretty good
@@tailwateroutfitters yes i hear the VR drags are an improvement over the older VS drags
Is the vr 150 a 4500 sized reel
No it’s 8000
What do you think of putting a 150 on a popping rod, you think the 200 is better or will the 150 crush
150 will work just fine depending on the size of the rod.
They’re made by the same company with different look and slightly different purpose.
