Once, before I had been doing ikebana for very long, my husband and I invited a Japanese colleague to the house for dinner, and he acknowledged my arrangement a lot like you say. He stopped in front of it and contemplated it in rapt silence for some twenty seconds, then reached out a reverent finger and almost touched the principal twig. He then gave a sigh of ineffable satisfaction before finally moving on. Of course I recognised that his reaction was conventional, but it was still gratifying to have my arrangement noticed. For the most part North Americans pay no attention at all.
