    I’m sorry and take no offense to this but.. I’m scared of going deaf, not being able to hear or understand things is unimaginable that’s why I idolize you! You handle it so well and I’m not even deaf but I cry every time I think about being able to hear well enough to understand people... 💕

    I have tinnitus so whilst I can hear struggle to differentiate words that are being spoken to me so if I'm not wearing my hearing aids I hear roughly every 4th word that is spoken. Also, it is so to see that you have the same type of hearing aids as me; I've never seen anyone else wearing them before!

    I've never thought to use a sewing needle to clean mine out....at work I use a paper clip :) Just pull the long end away, and bam! Instant hearing aid cleaner, knocks out all the wax that gets caught in it (I have rather waxy ears). I love your videos!! While I am hearing impaired instead of deaf, your videos have provided me with so much useful knowledge (and a laugh or two).

      Catherine Mobley yeah it gets so hard to remember being deaf is a range, not just total hearing loss. it's been easier to remember since my papa's gotten hearing loss. he can hear if you're loud and not high-pitched, he still can watch TV and listen to music but he needs it much louder and slower. he also has hearing aids but he rarely wears them, they scream all the time and they hurt. he's not deaf i don't think, but he's definitely hard of hearing.

      @@zachstuder8081 You have a different definition of deafness than most people, and the medical definition of "partial or complete hearing loss". Jessica has substantial hearing loss, so she is deaf.
      Why should you be the arbiter of deafness anyway? And why should your personal definition be the only valid one?

    As an Audiologist can I say how much I love this video. I wish all my patients could see this. You have a fantastic approach to wearing aids.
    Using the eye end of a needle is one of the things I suggest for cleaning out the end of the tube and totally don't feel pressured into doing your own retubing if you aren't doing it every day it can be fiddly.

    • @wolbashi
      @wolbashi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      some hearing aid producers include small cleaning sets together which each hearing aid device. Usually these consist of flexible long plastic needle, magnet to help you take out batteries and a small brush to brush out wax residue from your ear molds ;)
      Before I got hand on these I was using one layer of paper tissues rolled into a scone and it helped me a lot to put all wax out. Though it is important to do this at least once a week ;) my ears are on a itchy side so usually after three days I can feel that it is high time to do some basic cleaning with the paper tissue.
      About re-tubing. Here in Poland it is difficult to find tubes on the market so anyway you have to go to your audiologist and ask them for new tubes. Majority of them will just do this for you, some of them will sell some tubes so that you're stocked for the next year :D

      Also iirc the needles used in sewing machines for knit fabrics are rounded on the end instead of sharp (I may be horribly wrong on this)

    • @brendaleelydon
      @brendaleelydon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FennecTheRabbit No, you are correct! They are also called 'ball-point needles' :) An embroidery or tapestry needle (which I do believe she mentioned in the video) is a hand sewing needle that also tends towards a rounded/blunt 'point' & are usually longer than a machine needle (so perhaps easier to hold for some people).

    Awesome video. My one-year-old son has mild-moderate hearing loss (birth complications) and it's been a bit of an uphill struggle getting him to wear them. You've helped me understand what he might be experiencing when he huffs and yanks them out. It's also heartening for me as a clueless new father to see that you've clearly overcome the challenges of hearing loss. Thanks. I'll be watching the other videos!

      I have a moderate/severe loss in both ears and I'm an early childhood special educator. I have a masters degree. I have been teaching children up to age three (and helping their parents help them) for 35 years. Hearing loss, even when significant, can be overcome and does not need to get in the way of your child being able to do anything they want. Bless you for seeking to understand your child's point of view better. That and instilling the belief that your child can do anything they want are the best ways to support them.

    This video was great! It answers so many questions people have. It would be wonderful if you and Claudia did a video from a her point of view. Traveling with a deaf person for example. When we got married my husband could hear in the average range. Now he hears in the profoundly deaf range; this has changed the way we travel. It would be good to hear from Claudia's perspective. Maybe give tips on how other spouses can help. I know quite a few people who's spouse went deaf over a period of years, then they got hearing aids and that brought on other problems as well.

    I'm getting my first hearing aids after my operation this winter, and I'm so exited! My hearing has been going down drastically over the last half a year. It's hard for me to concentrate in school, and I can't watch tv shows or movies with other people anymore (because I have to turn it up so loud for me to be able to understand anything.) Casual conversation is also hard, and I sometimes rely on lipreading, even though I am terrible at it and get things wrong all the time.

My son had grommets inserted in both ears when he was four ... after I realised other people couldn't understand him and the that he couldnt hear well. I had developed a sort of mum-son sign language without even realising I was doing it. He hears so well since his operation but I realise it may reoccur. My son and my nanna who sometimes wears a hearing aid have been my only exposure to hearing loss. You are honestly educating me in matters I knew nothing about! I really appreciate your insights, they are so valuable to me 💗🌼🌸🌹

      Alphabetical Order I wear hearing aids and glasses. The glasses are on most of the time except for bed obviously. Check the arms of your glasses, maybe pick slimmer ones, the ophthalmologist should fit them for you. Yeah once in a while the aids will slip out, but no dramas just pop it back in. Good luck!

      wear contact lenses (my suggestion)

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Old question, but you might want to look into ones which work by bone conduction (if that's appropriate for your kind of hearing loss) as there are some which actually clip onto the arms/legs of the frames of glasses and transmit the sound via your skull. That way you wear both at the same time. I know for myself that if I were to require hearing aids at any point that wearing contacts wouldn't be a solution as they do not yet make my prescription with my degree of astigmatism in contact lenses (just not quite possible yet) so I have to wear glasses. So have answered as if there isn't an alternative to glasses for you either.
      If you want more info, just reply to this as my boyfriend knows more about them than I do (studied it briefly as part of his acoustical engineering degree, so he might know a brand name or proper term to look up).

    • @MiljaHahto
      @MiljaHahto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If eye surgery is possible and you can afford it, I can really recommend that. Makes life easier, is cheaper than glasses in the long run and actually has less risks than constant use of contact lenses.

    One of my favorite movies is Vitus, and I love that scene at the beginning when the father is pitching the idea of fashion hearing aids that are all kinds of colors. He says, "Instead of hiding the hearing aids, why not show them off??" It seems to me that that should be the standard--I have astigmatism and show off my glasses, so why shouldn't people who are hoh show off their hearing aids?

    Thank you so much for making this series, I most certainly leaned a LOT. It never occurred to me that if a person had hearing enough to benefit from hearing aids that they might still be profoundly affected by their lack of hearing. Thank you for taking the time to convey so articulately what your experience is like. You make the effort and are a strong communicator.

    I really love all your videos. I don't remember how I stumbled across your channel but I remember I was excited to learn some sign language while I watched. Then I realized BSL is wildly different from ASL, darn! It was so easy to pick up from you! Perhaps one day I'll find an equivalently good TH-camr that uses ASL. :P
    One question I thought of while watching the past two parts: how do you experience your own voice when you speak?

    I have a congenital defect in both my ears that means I could lose any amount of hearing (up to profoundly deaf) should I sustain a head injury. I’m already moderately hearing impaired in my left ear, which I sometimes wear a hearing aid in, with tinnitus in both ears. Your videos have given me so much hope for myself should I ever end up losing more of my hearing. I know I’ll be okay. I know I’ll be able to adapt. Thank you.

    Since you used to have full hearing: is the noise of the hearing aids similar to or louder than "normal" hearing? A friend of mine had to sleep with her's in when she had a kid, so she'd hear him (single mom)... And she was like "how do you people do that?! There's so much noise!" And I was wondering how different it is?

    • @laylyoldwild
      @laylyoldwild 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      My grandma's complained about this with her first set of hearing aids: they made all sound louder with no filter so it's like having auditory processing disorder (what I hear). She has a new set which differentiate sound better so vocal range is enhanced and other sounds more filtered out so I think she's said that's more like it was before. My dad's never had an issue with the first type but he came into hearing aids more recently. I guess it depends on the hearing aid and the reason for its use?

      it might be also bad fitting, usually you spend some time with audiologist and they might suggest you turning sounds a bit down and after a week when you come for re-visit they will amplify it a bit and adjust it according to your needs. Also majority of modern mid range hearing aids have various features helping with turning noise down. For instance in my old hearing aids I could not stand the noise when the ambulance was passing by. I mentioned it to my audiologist and she adjusted software inside my hearing aids and now. It is not a big deal. There is noise when the ambulance is passing by, but it does not give me pain ;)

    I am also wearing hearing aids, together with glasses actually 😄 I've been using them since the pandemic, when It became clear I could not understand pretty much anything without lipreading 😷😑🤣 the combination of the three things was quite stressful. Mask, glasses, hearing aids ... now I look like Dumbo I guess! 🐘 Anyways, I really want to thank you dear Jessica. You make me feel so much better in my half-deafness. In my opinion it's really important not to hide these tools also because they help you to immediately guess people's attitude towards disability: super sensitive, not sensitive, quite inclusive, not enough patient and so on. A big kiss!❤

    • @Bucherviews
      @Bucherviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I hope you don't mind that someone else is weighing in on this - I've been learning British Sign Language for about 3 years now, and I've just written quite a long comment in response :P I, personally, think that the best way is actually to take classes at your local Deaf Centre (but sometimes local colleges or organisations run them too). Most languages have a written form which makes them much easier to self-study, but signed languages don't, so I think it's really something best learned from a teacher if you can - that way they can correct your handshapes, and (if the teacher is deaf, which a lot of them are) you get used to interacting with deaf people.
      If you really can't afford classes, or live too far away from anywhere that runs classes (although there are also tutors that will teach you over Skype) there are also plenty of free apps and websites (e.g. BSL Dictionary) to use to look up signs and start to piece it together (and BSL Zone is good for TV programmes). I wouldn't recommend relying on books too much, because you can't see how it moves from a picture! By the way, you'll probably find several different versions of the same sign, because there are a lot of dialect variations in BSL. A good tip is to either try and work out which ones are local to your area (e.g. Scottish dialect) or stick to London dialect signs, which are becoming more standard and are probably the most widely used.
      Also, it's always good to learn the fingerspelling alphabet of your sign language - this is useful for things like signing your name, but is also good for when you're learning and don't know a sign and need to ask 'what is ___ in sign language?' This is usually a pretty easy and useful part.
      I really do recommend it as a language, by the way - I think it's something that should be a much more everyday thing to learn, at least the basics! British Sign Language (for example) is one of the native languages of the UK - deaf people don't have a place where they can, for example, just go to the shops and speak in their native language in the way that a lot of other languages can, but the more people that learn it the better it is for everyone to be able to communicate. (: Good luck!

    My ironic story is that I have chronic noise-triggered migraines and this kid at my school is bordering on deaf. We're in a group together and people always think I'm wearing hearing aids as well, when I'm really wearing little tech buds that cancel out noise and are great for any unexpected noises. When I don't feel well I just wear Bose Noise Cancelling headphones because they're way more comfortable

Greetings from the other side of the pond!

    I have a very similar hearing loss history to you. For many years I only wore one hearing aid at a time because I got overwhelmed by the sound when I wore two. As the years passed, I continued to loose decibels and in my 50s my hearing was such that I really needed both hearing aids in to function at work and in the community. I did adjust and now I have no problem wearing both aids all day. I do pop them out if the office gets too noisy and I need a break. I used to take them out when I got home (getting comfortable) but I don't even do that any more.

    It's so important to me to get more information from Deaf adults. My four year-old is Deaf and wears hearing aids, and she doesn't "sound" Deaf according to literally every stranger and acquaintance and relative... and they wonder if it's even worth us sending her to the local specialized school so that she also learns a sign language. We maintain that she should have the option of signing if she wants to, and learning early will help. She loves her purple aids with bright pink ear molds, she chooses the colours when we change the molds, and she loves signing, and we're taking classes to keep up. Most of her classmates have hearing aids and implants, and we attend a lot of community events.
    I'm always on the lookout for young adults who wear hearing aids and are also just cool and good at what they do, the same way I keep a mental list of dyslexic celebrities and leaders to point to when my older daughter gets down on herself for it. It's great, too, to hear first-person accounts from adults who share their life experiences so that I can understand a bit more of what they're going to go through, you know? Thank you so much for sharing.
    (I've found a very very small size of crochet hook- 0.5mm or so- works wonders for cleaning the molds, instead of a needle. Small, metal, but also not sharp and with an excellent hook that can scoop around. I work in very small gauge crochet, and it's been our go-to tool for years now!)

    I was born with a severe hearing loss condition, as my dad was. I passed school within the firsts to pass. I can't say that the hearing did not help at all, but lip-reading was the tool. However, when I got into a job wasn't that easy anymore so I needed to get hearing aids. I've got the same ones as you and they do a great job and I also subscribe to almost everything you said, it's more quiet and definitely relaxing to take them off but mine are not painfully, I guess that is because I have small tubes and a small earbuds as well. I honestly believe you are a unbelievable person, as long as you can speak so clearly, calmly and fluently. I am sure that you put a lot of work into it. You're amazing!
