  • Gone are the days where the money of investors actually goes towards making returns. With more and more companies funneling increased capital into Enviromental, Social and (Corporate) Governance (ESG) investments, it seems as though ROI is being put on the backburner in favour of activism funded by the shareholder dollar. In today's day and age, who actually owns your favourite company? And where is your hard-earned money truly going if your investments isn't coming back to your pocket tenfold.

    "There's a place for activism, but that isn't in Capitalism" isn't really the right way to frame the problem. The real issue is that most of what Blackrock manages are other people's investments. They're using other people's investments as leverage to push for social and economic changes that many, perhaps even most, of those individual investors do not agree with. They are exercising a voice that is not theirs on behalf of investors who don't agree with their message and largely, until recently, did not realize their voice was being co-opted by someone else.
