    the building of Speke Hall began in 1530, so actually it is closer to being, from its beginnings, nearly 500 years old.

      According to Roy Boardman who at the time of my visit was the curator and took me around on a private tour, he says the great hall goes back to the original Viking Noreis's that seized the land and built the first stone building that became the great hall. I think he said just after the battle of Hastings but it's been a couple decades for me now.

    Thanks so much. As a Norris here in California I'd been lucky enough to visit this wonderful place twice as I'm married to a Geordie Lass and have visited the UK 11 times. Would love to spend a weekend sometime there, heh.

    First class video Ian.liked the monkey puzzle tree we used to have a lot up here in North Yorkshire a few million years ago. you can often see their remains on the beach around Whitby in the form of Whitby Jet.

    This has whetted my appetite - Have to get the old NT card out and take a dekko. BTW did you have your patented wind muff on? I noticed a lot of wind in the vid but not much blow on the mic.

      The Meejah Channel Yes I did, I used elastic bands instead of glue (think I got that from you) :o)

    Went there on a school trip when I was a kid. We all loved the priest hole. Nothing like a secret room to get the imaginations of Scooby Doo steeped youth going.

    'animated' video host.... a lot of what is actually inside Speke Hall was barely shown here, plus the maze outside....... BEAUTIFUL place ..... and has stood the test of time despite being right close to the airport !!

      @Henllan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      eaglevp Hopefully, yes. The weather was poor for a walk (forecast heavy rain all day) so a trip out was on the cards, should be fun to do a few more :o)

    and you forgot to mention the original priests hiding hole/room, harking back to the times of Henry VIII and the result of his reformation when catholicism was abolished.

      +Jacqui Moore The Priest hole was an interesting place, I couldn't get any reasonable footage because it was too small - but it would have been nice to include it. Thanks Jacqui :)
