Muhammad and his followers went to Medina (in 622, the start of the Islamic calendar), Muslims were instructed to pray towards Jerusalem. But about 18 months later, a revelation came down from God, ordering them to turn about 180 degrees to pray towards Mecca, which they have done since then. In other words, Jerusalem lost its significance as the qibla (direction of prayer) and also as a site for pilgrimage. The Qur'an does not even mention Jerusalem or al-Quds, not even in the verses about the night journey to the 'furthest mosque' (masjid al-aqsa). As for the flying horse etc., that is mainly later legend. It's time these facvts were presented in international fora (e.g. UNESCO) and that this and other Muslim claims (e.g. calling the Maarat Ha-Mechpela in Hebron 'Abraham's mosque', as if a mosque existed anywhere in the time of the patriarchs.

It seems to me that some one wants my comment removed. I may not be as brilliant as the professor but I am asking the same question........ "Can you explain the present without looking at the past?" The Torah covers the five thousand years he is talking about, so let us see what the Torah says about Israel: Torah speaks of twelve tribes the children of one man; Joseph sold as a slave; the rest of his brethren and father joining him in Mizraim. The Israelites were not Europeans.
They left Mizraim under the leadership of Moses a man who lived in the Pharaoh's palace for forty years and was mistaken for the people of the land. The plaques shows slaves in Mizraim (Egypt) and captives (Israelites) of the Northern Kingdom by the Assyrians.
The Greeks came along and called all the people of the area Ethiops (black) then the Romans who by 70AD chased the Israelites out of their land, historians say over 1,000,000 fled into Africa to hide from Roman persecution and slavery...... can a smart man as the professor tell me what would have been the complexion of these pre 1948 Israelites? The Western Roman Empire fell in 476AD at that time there were no Ashkenazi, Hasidic or Sephardic Jews.
Mohammed who was born around 570AD began his ministry around 610AD his first converts to Islam were Israelites; ( Yethib (Medina); Spain Portugal France Byzantium and Khazaria tell the story; the conversion of the Khazars to Judaism a people who became citizens of Russia changed everything.
The Torah the same book the Israelis are holding on to and using as the basis for their claim, apart from the physical look, the Torah prophesied the condition from poverty to slavery that will befall the Israelites. I dare those who want my post removed proved that Israel of today are the descendants of the nation Moses led out of Egypt....... and remember I have not yet spoken on the Balfour declaration or Theodore Herzl.

Professor the Arabs did not make a mistake; the mistake was giving the larger portion of the land to the SMALLER population ( Europeans a people with no tie to the land). The partition was blatantly unfair; were you a Palestinian would you have accepted ? Besides the Arabs were on the land since 640AD 98 years before there was ever an Ashkenazi Jews
