Every trans person who has ever lived has at some point looked at a cisgendered person of their true gender and said "That! I want to be that!" One Piece, being a gag manga before anything else, takes that idea to its comedic extreme. The same principle still applies. 2 "Luffy told Yamato 'Just because you call yourself Oden doesn't make it true', so clearly the show disagrees!" Pay attention to what you just said. "Calling yourself ODEN doesn't make it true." Luffy wasn't talking about gender. And even if that was the intent, Luffy clearly changes his mind almost immediately, since he exclusively uses he/him pronouns for Yamato right after that. 3 "Look at the way she's dressed! She's not even trying to hide her breasts!" Trans men don't owe you masculinity. If a cis man can present femininely and still be a man, then a trans man can do the same. Femboys are valid, regardless of their assigned gender at birth. 4 "Kaido raised Yamato as a boy because he wanted a son!" That's not what I saw. I haven't finished the Wano Arc because I'm watching the dub, but the earliest instance of Kaido treating Yamato like his son that we see is after he puts the manacles on him, while the earliest instance we see of Yamato identifying as a boy is before that. "If you're really my son, then become strong for me" reads as "if you're gonna call yourself my son, then I'm gonna hold you to the same standard that I would hold a son." Also, what part of Yamato's character makes you think he'd identify as a man just because his father told him to? 5 "Oda hasn't confirmed if Yamato is trans! The people who worked on One Piece still call Yamato a woman!" I've said it before and I'll say it again, the character you wrote to be trans as a joke doesn't stop being trans just because you treat them like a joke. It doesn't matter if you believe trans people are who they say they are, doesn't matter if you mock them in-universe for it, if you write a character who was identifies differently from the gender they were assigned at birth, then you have written a trans character. Furthermore, "Word of God", the idea that if the writer says something about their story, then it must be true, isn't a real thing. It doesn't matter what the writer says about their story if the story's very existence contradicts it. If a writer says "This character isn't racist", and the character repeatedly says racist shit, then that character is clearly racist, regardless of what the writer says. Even if Oda officially announces that Yamato isn't trans, that doesn't changed to fact that Yamato identifies as a man despite being assigned female at birth. Character assassination and personal agenda also need to be considered. If a transphobic writer has their trans character "change their mind" or "come to their senses", that needs to be taken with a Carthage of salt. In the end, no matter how you slice it, Yamato IS a trans man.
This was a thoughtful and unique character sheet creation. I say that because I am a One Piece fan and a Yamato fan at that. I'm new to the world of DnD so I need help in the future when creating my own character. But I'm interested and fascinated by the creation process. If you had to do another One Piece character(s) in the future, here are three suggestions: Nami, Brook, and Robin.
