I've had one for a year and I'm still discovering cool sounds, especially for looping or blending it with distortion for leads. Ola is right, but you still get 128 tweakable synth/pad/lead/organ/FX/sequencer sounds all controllable via an expression pedal, but with excellent tracking. Best usable pedal I've bought in years, and I bought a lot. At this price range, I don't think anything comes close.
@@aymericmarchand3472 OK I think I should get an expression pedal and try that with it. I don't think I've seen a demo of someone using one with it. Edit: Just watching a demo of it with an expression pedal. Very cool!

I love this pedal. I know Ola is a metal channel, but anyone doing 80's songs can pull lead synth lines out of this with ease. Blended with a fuzz and reverb and using the hold feature on the sequencer can deliver some amazing stuff. Terrific for ambient playing.
One of best guitar gear purchases of the whole year 2020. Honestly. I spent quite a bit this year in pedals from fuzzes to delays and this fucker keeps on and is one of the essentials of my sound. Tracking is amazing and blend helps a lot
Reminds me of 70s-80s Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. They were always experimenting with different tones , time signatures and about anything else that they could make music with. No to mention their unique lyrics
I play a SY-300 (the SY-1's larger bro) through one stereo channel, and all my clean and guitar effects through another stereo channel, then play them separate or blend them together as needed. Sounds fantastic! The SY-1 actually seems to concentrate everything I like about the SY-300, but in a smaller and easier to use model. Nice.
@@taunokekkonen5733 yes is all about creativity and thinking out of the box. Mike Kerr is another modern musician that have had succes with being creative and come up with something surpricingly different that sounds great.
As a Digitech Synth Wah owner and lover, my humble opinion is that the Boss is superior to it. I would not replace the Digitech because it's awesome, but the way it sounds like the SY-1 handles polyphonics alone makes it superior in my mind, not to mention the additional features... and now I want one... like, a lot. Hahaha. Thanks Ola! :)
If you want more use it with a volume pedal for swells and delay. You can also connect an expression pedal - for filter sweeps and stuff -and a A/B switch to. hold or whammy one octave higher
Thanks for sharing that pedal, Ola. Being in a cover band, there were one or two sounds I could use (unless we start covering old Yes songs, then there are several), but probably not necessary.
Late to the party but I run all my guitar effects in the loop, which means I can have pad sounds on top of my clean/distorted guitar. The send/return only affects your guitar sound, and when the SY-1 is off everything works as if it wasn't there. Very cool pedal.
Had mine for a few months now and i absolutely love it! Expression pedal is a must though for using it live. Nice bit of kit if your into prog or industrial metal.
Trouble with these pedals is if a keyboard player made these sounds we'd be underwhelmed, and if a guitarist makes these sounds the eq is totally different to the guitar setup and never sounds quite right. Mixing it with a guitar for fat octaving riffs or doing pad sounds is the way to go IMO.
I find that these pedals works best if mixed in "under", in parallel, with the guitar tone already used. Thus coloring etc. But yeah, trying to be a synth, nah then you are better off using the Fishman midi pickup or something similar (only tried that one) and use your synth of choice, but being able to use your guitar as the keyboard input.
I think the fact that they made this blendable with your original signal is pretty much the roadmap for how it was meant to be used. If you want a fuller pallet of sounds then you have to step way up in price to the SY 300 and then you still can’t send midiTo run samplers or anything like that. I think for some people this is perfect just a fill-in for that guitar based band that doesn’t want to have or hire a keyboard player but this isn’t a sound pallet to build around. I have the Fishman. It’s not perfect either but at least it’s not limited sound wise. It doesn’t write midi like a keyboard it uses a bunch of bend messages And you always have to clean up extra notes. That kind of slows down the process because you might not hear those extra notes in the patch you were using but then if you change patches you hear the notes. So the whole thing still hasn’t really perfected yet.
@@mikep6967 yeah the Fishman was nice for the little time I could try it, but you are right that it is not perfect at al. Did grab one for my bass after the video without any need if it, just because the review was awesome. Thanks Ola, I love this pedal, great for goth sounds.
I’m running a distorted sound in the loop of the SY-1 and blending in a lead or bass synth sound, makes your riffs sound huge. I don’t understand why metal skewing people aren’t demoing this pedal with this technique. You get the attack from then guitar and the body from the synth. I also run it in parallel to my rhythm tone in the fx send of my AX8 for a similar result. You also get an octave up and sound hold if you plug a 2 button switch into the ctrl jack. This pedal is so much more useful to metal than portrayed in this video.
I play keyboards (Hammond organ and certainly also various synths) as well as guitar and bass. For those who can't: this pedal will help. Won't replace a real synth, anymore than a synth can fully replicate a guitar or bass.
