As I understand it, the Halifax class has not been modernised to the extent it could have been with a little bit more cash. The 16 mk 48 cells that formally housed sea sparrow are actually able to dual pack essm for 32 of them but only 16 are carried, nowhere near as much effort has been put into modifying the radar systems as the equivalent size and role Australian anzac frigates and there is no plan to replace harpoon till the CSC comes into service- and mk 46 is an ancient torpedo system. An 8 cell mk 41 aft of the gun for Asroc/ Quadpack essm would have been a wise move given the class is now Canadas only surface combatant

The ASW technology on the Halifax class is 30 yrs old. The design of the ship is over 30 yrs old. Take a look at what the rest of the world is launching in the way of ships and you will see a marked difference. The ASW weapon that the Halifax class carries is a weapon of last resort. From unclassified sources, the max range of the mk 46 is significantly less than the max range of sub torpedoes. By the time the Halifax class itself can detect a quiet enemy sub, it already has a torpedo targeting the Halifax. The only redeeming factor is the Cyclone helicopter that can detect and 'bother' a sub far enough away from the Halifax class, so that the ship can turn and run from the threat, if it wishes to survive -- especially if it is a one-on-one battle.
You have obviously never served in the Canadian or any other navy and your ignorance on this subject is apparent. These ships can detect submarines well out of the range of them being able to use their torpedoes and can pinpoint and attack them using their helicopters dipping sonar and torpedoes. As a class of subhunters they are one of the most effective vessels in NATO certainly better in the ASW role than any surface vessel the USN currently fields.
Bosun is a trade in the Canadian Navy and there are lots of them. They are the "sailors" on board ships that are full of technicians these days. What an America would call a "Bosun" is what the Canadians call a "Coxswin".
@@tonys1636 Different types of tonnage are used by different types of ship. Warships typically to use displacement when talking about tonnage. Cargo ships or passenger liners often use gross tonnage which is a measure of volume instead of weight.
You think that they should be doing that? What the Halifax class or the entire Canadian or let's push even wider, NATO navies do is find, identify and track submarines so that if it becomes necessary to do so, enemy submarines can be quickly destroyed. During a "cold war", it's about taking the subs stealth away.
