    I served as a Canadian Military Engineer in the '90's and was proud of how much Canadian servicemen and women did with so little support from the government. As a CME we had a high operational tempo in order to meet our deployment and training exercises, which we did but only by sacrificing our family lives. At times the supply issues were so bad that we had to wear worn out combat uniforms as there were no replacements and once we were ordered to turn in one of the two pairs of combat boots we were issued so Supply could issue them to others. Used combat boots! More than once we had to rely on American transport aircraft to get us to joint training exercises and with the closure of CFB Chilliwack we had to train at Ft. Lewis in Washington state. Yet despite the government's lack of support for the Canadian Forces we all dug down deep and made do with what we had although I must admit that it was always a concern that if the government couldn't properly support us during peacetime we better the heck not go to war! CHIMO!

    Retired RCN ; I believe Canada should have been a submarine navy, hunter killer/ surveillance patrol. Best bang for your dollar overall. We should have purchased or built the German Type submarine. Surface ships are just top water targets. Canada had the option in the early 2000s to obtain these sleek ultra quiet killing machines of the deep and further more to build more here. These were at the time state of the art. Once again a group of numpty’s in Ottawa said no and the contracts were laid to build ice breaker patrol ships when the ice now for the most part is slush. 🤪.

      "The Government" is your government and it's the taxpayers of Canada that are 100% at fault. The public fails to show any interest in our defences, couldn't care less apparently and if the Canadian taxpayers did care, they would make Defence a voting issue. They don't government after government. No party is going to support the military if there are no votes in it for them.

    I have alot of pride in our military folks. These people make it look like a good occupation. But remember, they say and do what they are told to do and say. Reality is, nobody wants to join because our government treats them like peons. They have WW2 equipment to deal with. In Latvia had to use hand me downs or extra helmets and warmer clothing from other militaries. Plus have to ask their families to send them food. Their pensions and medicals suck big time. So yup, people are just gonna line up to join. You can stay home and much safer and make the same or better pay and medical on welfare.
    Our military should make more money than our highest paid police force. They are our country police . On call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year do deal with any threats from anywhere in the world. Not like our police that just just deal with local problems and do a shoddy job at that.

    Would love to see Canada contribute more to defending North America. With such a great maritime history and the northern pole still the closest distance to russia, why the government won't spend more on it's military I don't understand. Also, what use is a 40 or 57mm gun on a ship as big as a frigate? Anyone know? I mean REALLY..... a 2 or 6lb shell against what? Seems to me any vessel over 150 feet should have a 3" gun. Over 400' a 5"" gun, and over 550' maybe a new 7"" rapid fire gun for all NATO ships. Missles are so expensive and not needed if you had a gum with a worth while shell weight/size....

      As always, there are numerous reasons. While not all of them are necessarily good reasons, perhaps perspective can be gained by understanding that the entire population of Canada is less than that of the state of California. The math, in terms of tax base, is fairly obvious. It'd be great if we spent at least the average of our European allies, but no one else on the planet spends the same percentage of federal budgets on defence as the U.S. does. Pretty sure most Canadians wouldn't want to do that, either.

    I love how our brave sailors low key talk about they make miracle with nothing. Management main focus is diversity and inclusion instead of supplying our sailors with the equipment they need. The younger generation can see through the fake facade and have no interest in joining a leadership that demonizes them.

    Canada's military spending is about the same as Australia's, why do they have aircraft carriers (two!) and advanced destroyers, and we only have some 30 years old ships?where did the money go?Type 26 frigate from British? where is our own defense industry?

    • @RCNMRC

      The Type 26 will be built here in Canada :)

      The Aussies weren't ruined by the unification of their armed forces. Caf unification caused a spiral of "less personnel= less ships", and "less ships means less personnel". I'd also like to add on the fact we are buying 15 type 26 to the handful the Australians are buying. There is hope for the RCN, it'll just take our shipbuilding cranking into gear

    • @jonmce1
      @jonmce1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To start with the Halifaxs were designed at the same time as the American Burkes, I knew a guy who was involved in their development. The full load of the Canadian Type 26 is that of the the American Burkes destroyer at 9400 tons or the Russian Muskova cruiser. Frigates????? Canada does not need carriers it would be a waste of money. The Australian's environment is quite different and does not have to do an Arctic build up as we do. Incident;y Canada is buying 88 Block 4 F35s vs the Australian 72 Blocks 1 through 3. The Subs that in the works possibly 12 KSS3 will also be at least partially built in or outfitted in Canada and the type 26s will be built in Canada. Canada is planning to build 15 and Australia 9. Note Canada must build a two ocean navy plus the Arctic. Carriers do nothing for that. Australia does not maintain much of a Coast Guard while Canada must maintain multiple ice breakers including the planned two heavy ice breakers. Canadian conditions are usually more challenging than those faced by Australia. Canadain shipbuilding is about 25% of the toal capacity in North America.

      @user-Gunner-Fu ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arabrem488 couldn't agree more, and I do know the fact that Canada bought 15 frigates, the problem is that the Type 26 is too expensive, i think 12 ships are enough to replace the Halifax-class frigate one-on-one, and the rest of money ,we can use to build a small aircraft carrier like Australia or Spain,wouldn't that be better?

    • @jameson1239
      @jameson1239 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Simply looking at money doesn’t mean that much you need to look at how the money is being spent I’d wager a lot more of Australias money is being spent of procurement vs Canadas budget also calling what Australia has an aircraft carrier is quite generous they are helicopter carriers/troopships which we don’t particularly need considering those types of ships don’t work well in an arctic environment we tested it in the 50s with HMCS Bonaventure.

    The first and foremost consideration in Canadian National Defense is politics: Where the ship is going to be built, the # of jobs created, and the # of potential votes.
    The second consideration is the power of unions. Without unions and the people it employs nothing can be done.
    The third consideration is the personnel of DND itself who are poorly paid, poorly trained and the turn-over of personnel is very high.
    The equipment is often out of date by decades;
    The military mentality lags even futher behind.
    It is so sad that Canadian National Defense is being compromised by its own Natioal government first, and then by powerful unions desperate for work and who, in turn, have the ability to influence National elections.
    Canada should have been conquered long ago if it were somewhere in the middle of Europe.

As always we partner with the warmongering meddling USA. We should keep our limited armed forces available to intercept threats on our coasts and in the arctic.

The governments past and present are taking a big gamble not keeping our forces strong protecting the longest coastal land in the world. Our navy is a disgrace aswell as the other 2 military services. Not our fault as we are always looking to our government to be seeing this.
