    Description Source
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_Run
    Out Run (アウト ラン?) is an arcade game released by Sega in 1986. It was designed by Yu Suzuki and developed by Sega AM2. The game was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling video games of its time and winning the Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year. It is notable for its innovative hardware (including a moving cabinet), pioneering graphics and music, innovative features such as offering the player choices in both soundtrack and non-linear routes, and its strong theme of luxury and relaxation. In retrospective interviews, Yu Suzuki has classified Out Run not as a racing game, but as a "driving" game.
    Gameplay
    Out Run is a 3D third-person racing game. The player controls a car, a Ferrari Testarossa, from a rear third-person perspective. The player must race to the end of each stage as fast as possible against a time limit while avoiding traffic. At the end of each stage, the player is presented with a fork in the road where the player must choose one of two stages. The left route presents an easier stage, while the right offers a greater challenge. Passing through checkpoints awards the player with extra time. Once the timer reaches zero or the player completes the race, the game ends. In addition to the nonlinear gameplay, Out Run also offered the choice of music to listen to while driving, represented as radio stations.

    The OutRun arcade sprite scrolling is probably the best ever programmed and still outstanding to see! Gotta love it! That feature gives to the gameplay an hyper sense of speed and yet precise tridimensionality and definitely represents the magic of the game itself! Who had need polygons with such 3D illusionistic perfection?

    Outrun on the Sega Saturn is the best version.It actually runs at 60 frames per second instead of the arcade's 30.The GBA version is a pretty close port as well.
    You may also noticed that the car in the Dreamcast version looks different.That's because Sega lost the rights to use the Testarossa variant,so the car looks completely different in it.
    OutRun 2006 is also a fantastic game which everyone should play.

      While this video doesn't show it, the Saturn version is actually the best port. The Saturn port like the Dreamcast version will run at 30fps just like the original Arcade version. However it also has a mode in the options to make the game run at 60fps making it even better than the Arcade version. The original Japanese Release has even more bonuses than the US release as it has the original music and a remixed soundtrack.

    The staying power of the original arcade version was amazing. It continued to be found at local pizzerias, laundromats, take out places well into the 90s. It was a easy game to pick up i think that is one of the main reasons. Just race to point a to put b no adversaries.

    Given this video slide into the "coast to coast" versions, I'll add this. I had Outrun 2 Coast to Coast on PS3 and then spied it in arcade version at the Cinema lobby. I hopped on and it was IDENTICAL to the PS3 version. Popped in my $2 and on the first attempt, completed all the stages (easy route) with no effort, while I kid sat behind me with his jaw on the floor as I drifted each corner to completion. It was a good day :)

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, although "OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast" for the PC is very nice too. 1080p, 60fps, and it has both the OutRun 2 and OutRun 2006 courses.
      The only problems with it are that it doesn't play nice with Xinput controllers (i.e. Xbox 360 pad) and (worse) they don't sell it anymore, due to the expired Ferrari license problem that caused all of the Sumo Digital OutRun games (OutRun 2 / 2006 / Online Arcade) to disappear from digital storefronts. Which is a real shame for OutRun fans who don't already own them.
      Luckily, all except Online Arcade (which was really just 2006 minus the OutRun 2 courses anyway) had physical disc releases, so determined folks will always be able to hunt down a legit copy :)

      I'll be the nerd. Back in the days of limited bytes, this was done to save precious bytes and speed up the game. The reason the horse "flips" is because the game is using the same car sprite twice (left turn and right turn) but flipping it. Let's say there are 3 degree's of "tightness" to the turn animation. To turn without a flipping horse (lol) would require 7 sprites (including dead straight driving). By accepting a flipping horse, the sprite count is reduced to 4.
      Now I'm not up on how much data a single coloured pixel takes up, so I'm going to guess, based on hex code, that it's at lease 6 bytes per pixel. The original car sprite was 72x42 pixels (3024) so we may be talking at least 18KB per sprite. Possibly more. So a save in my example above of a precious 54KB (3 sprites) if not more. Keep in mind, the arcade unit had 236KB of graphics memory (wiki), you can see why every byte mattered back then.

    One of my favourite games ever - and this video is a great comparison of a lot of the ports! Was exposed to the C64 port myself the most as this was the version that we owned back in the day. Of course the Arcade port was the most amazing one - especially the sit down cabinet! Still love that cab. The Outrun2 2006 edition surpassed the original in my opinion but both are excellent games!

    I was making a DOS game for a competition recently, and after dealing with the limitations of the platform, it got me thinking about racing games like Outrun and how they managed to update the screen fast enough to handle the turns and the scenery objects along the side of the road. It always leaves you impressed with what the devs were capable of doing on hardware not meant for gaming.

      But that's wrong you absolute idiot! The C64 may look good, but it has no branching paths and seems to control horribly. There are much better ports, like the Master System and Game Gear versions. Also the C64 didn't have calculator hardware. The 6502 processor and SID chip were computer hardware. The 6502 was actually pretty common, being in a lot of computers and game consoles. Learn to do your research, you imbecile.

    The best version is the Sega Saturn. There's an option called SMOOTH which makes the game run at 60fps.
    Also, After Burner for Saturn by default runs at 60fps. I wonder if Space Harrier runs at 60fps........

    The PC Engine port is failing/lacking big time:
    - lower resolution meaning less detailed and stretched graphics (a good example is the "horse" supposed to be the Ferrari logo)
    - not fullscreen with added black bars at the top/bottom of the screen
    - no digitized voices
    - no side animation of your car when the game starts
    - many stages lack essential visual element(s) supposed to *define* these stages such as the ocean @Coconut Beach or the Clouds @Cloudy Mountain...
    - no characters animation when you crash (they simply disappear)
    - no route indicator
    - no parallax scrollings...
    Still a decent port but the Mega Drive one is not only more accurate to the arcade original but also adds some extra content such as a 4th selectable music (called Step on Beat) or several difficulty settings included a special hyper mode which means great replay value. The Mega Drive port is my favorite next to the Saturn one!

      I haven't spotted this yet but you're right! I just played both versions again and no trucks on PC Engine while they're here on Mega Drive.
      Also, but it's more subjective, I much prefer the music on Mega Drive! Some lovely renditions thanx to the great FM sound chip.

      The PC Engine port also lacks the Volkswagen Beetle as well as many others things. I totally agree, this version plays well but it's so lacking it can't even compare with the Mega Drive version.
      I also agree about the music, the "buzzing" sound of the PC Engine doesn't fit Outrun much while the Mega Drive port has great renditions of the legendary Outrun soundtrack (which is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time!).

    Wow, so it wasn't until the Dreamcast that we got a truly authentic home conversion of the arcade original - one that scaled the graphics smoothly, and ran at a fast frame-rate that didn't make the roadside scenery look like it was going backwards! Gotta love the Dreamcast.
    One thing this video is missing is the full horror of that execrable ZX Spectrum version of OutRun... The video here is clearly captured from the 128K version of the game, but most Spectrum owners had to play OutRun in standard 48K form - which not only lacked the music but also could only hold ONE stage in memory. The 128K Spectrum could at least play a recognisable tune and hold all 15 stages in memory, and it's still the worst version here. Now imagine the same version, but minus the music, and having to find each new stage on a cassette tape and load it (taking about a minute) at every single junction choice along the route. Makes even the worst modern game look pretty good, doesn't it? ;)

    • @Jimbo8012
      @Jimbo8012 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with everything you say apart from the Dreamcast version was the first truly authentic home conversion. It wasn't as it lacked the original Ferrari Testarossa.
      The best 2 home versions are:
      - Outrun on Sega Ages on the Sega Saturn which obviously pre-dated it. Arguably this version is even superior to the arcade as it runs at 60 frames per second compared to 30 frames per second in the arcade;
      - The unlocked Original Outrun on Outrun 2 on the XBox.
      I've played the 48k Spectrum version at a friend's over 25 years ago and it's absolutely fucking execrable. The frame rate was non-existent. I had the Master System version at the time and it was 1,000 X better.
      Prior to the Saturn port, the only two versions that came remotely close to the arcade where the Megadrive and PC Engine ports.

    • @kuningas7

    The best home versions of the game were on the Saturn and beyond. The problem is that by the time those came around, the game was nearly 10 years old. If you were a kid when you played Outrun in the arcade, then you were an old man before they finally made an arcade perfect port for the Saturn.
    I was surprised to find that in the 1980's the best version of this game was on the Master System or the PC Engine. The Amiga did a good job with the colors, but the game looks most fun to play on the Master System.
    Another surprise came from the Sega Genesis. I expected that version to be VERY close to the arcade original and I was sorely disappointed. At the very least the could have included noise from the engine. Even Rad Racer on the NES had engine noise.

  • @Imgema

    Were the amstrad/spectrum versions actually on the market? They were sold? for money? I mean, i know many games on these machines had painfully slow frame rate (especially some vectror/3D ones) but these ports run at, what, 4fps? You don't even need a counter, you can actually count the frames. I can only imagine the frustration gamers felt when they saw this thing move (barely).
    Also, Outrun 2006 isn't the same game, it's more like a sequel and not a remade version (like the Sega collection on PS2) so i don't think it belongs in this comparison. Other than that, superb video, like always.
