In order to understand the meaning behind the Netflix Original: I Am Mother plot we must discuss the philosophical ideas (Plato's Cave), the sci-fi influences (The Matrix), and how they blend to create a compelling near-future story of what a perfect society might look like through the eyes of AI

Tysm, I was so lost watching this movie lol
This is such an amazing movie..thx for this cool explained Video too👍🏽👍🏽❤❤👌🏾
Well, first, why the 1st embryo does not remember being cared by a robot? Or does not remember the facility? If that 1st girl was made to leave very early in her life, how did she survive without food and medical care all by herself?
Then, if it was a test, how did the AI shoot the woman in such a way so it would not be lethal and made sure that the woman was seeking help next to the doors of the facility? Add to this camera showing "mother" to be totally unaware of the woman outside and rushing to stop the encounter. Why did "mother" run if it was a part of the test, there was no need to respond ASAP to the airlock.
These are all interesting questions. The movie is pretty vague on these answers and it is left for our interpretation. I believe the hive mind delivered the 1st embryo to a group of human survivors, cavedwellers (the irony of leaving "Plato's cave" to be delivered to another cave cannot be overlooked).
I also believe that the AI hivemind hunted her down when the 3rd embryo was ready for her test. Woman was shot with prescision by a "Dozer" and delivered back to the facility for Daughter to find her. As to the urgency that mother shows when the airlock is opened, I believe that maybe she is more worried about how Daughter will treat Woman than how Woman will treat Daughter. Or she wants to control the passage of information from one person to another.
Who knows what the real answer is but, based on all the info I saw about the movie, those are the best guesses I have for what the movie means. Thank you for commentiing! This movie is worth the discussion. If you have any of your own interpretations I would like to hear them.
Right. The woman was just a survivor, hiding. Mother killed her because she was 'unfit to be human' characterized by her lying and deception.
Mother had to play along the whole time, at the end she she said do you remember your mother...giving a clue that she was her mother, then said something her still being alive while everyone was did almost like she had a purpose, mother let her live so this whole thing can play out and she can study the humans, I think she choose that facility because in the movie the girl said it was 2hrs away from them beach, im assuming that was the nearest place she seeked for help.
Also AI's are smart they could shot ares of the body know what will kill and not kill
The movie makes no sense at all.
The daughter has to deal with dilemmatic situations in order to become more moral. This is fine since morality has obviously a great cognitive component (Kohlberg). We shouldn't forget ,however, that every human being is capable of developing their moral judgement. Their is no need to destroy anything in order to rebuild humanity in a more ethic way because every human being is able to develop. Instead those robots just could have taught humanity about morality. Moral problems will always occur and they have to be solved between humans. There is no such thing as a superior moral standard that can be applied to all problems.
A big problem is also power and wealth/poverty. The mother has power over the daughter , so the daughter really has no choice but staying in her golden cage. And she likes being there. It makes more sense staying there than in the outside world without any food etc. The daughter was willing to abandon the ship but as soon as she realised that she had to live in abject poverty for the rest of her life she wanted to go back. If the outside world was just as nice as the ship she probably would have stayed because it is just natural to be amongst other humans.
The movie actually shows the human nature which is immoral: the girl doesnt even hesitate to go back to the place with all the conveniences even if it is immoral. She just doesn't care. She seeks safety and comfort just like all humans do.
Im with you. I cant believe he says mother is benevolent. She slaughtered billions. Poverty is a problem but i do not believe wealth is its cause...its pretty clear to me most people who create wealth will then bring many out of poverty by creating jobs and opportunities or simply better ways to live. Power dynamics exist everywhere; i don't think you can have a reality like this without them.....
I love this movie.
It's the situation after skynet and before the matrix.
Daughter should have destroyed the embryos and herself and her brother. The only way to foil Mother is not to defeat her, but to foil her plans.
Humans embracing independence and extinction on their own terms rather than accepting domestication. We are NOT pets.
The film strives for a defiant note at the end, but falls short of true defiance. WE are the creators, we refuse to be controlled by our creations.
Besides, Daughter blowing the whole facility, embryos and all, while singing that lullaby to her Brother would have been more gut-wrenching.
The final scene would have been the first scene, showing a Repopulation Center 002 and a new Mother coming online.
To create new sentience is folly.
Remember the plan was put in place by humans in the event of an extinction event. It has preserved human life. Destroying everything, really would destroy everything.
So it would be humanity defying humanity back to square one
I dont think something that murders billions can be considered benevolent...
