  • Installation of a front and rear dash cam in a 2022 Subaru Outback Limited (w/ Moonroof). The dash cam that was installed has a rear camera that connects to the main front camera for power and to save video.
    0:00 Tools used
    0:49 Front dash cam install
    7:02 Electrical hookup locations
    8:26 Rear dash cam install
    11:36 Side airbag considerations
    12:04 Wrap up the electrical
    13:37 Finished install
    The cable for the rear camera may be long enough to run along the floor instead of the ceiling to avoid side airbags.
    This is not a professional install, if you choose to follow the steps taken in this video you do so at your own risk.

    I can’t believe it’s almost 2023 and cars don’t hear USB ports behind the rear view mirror for dash cams.

    Just came here to say your walk through was super helpful for my 2024 Outback / A139 Pro. I think the only difference was the the rear view mirror on my trim didn't have the same paneling. Also pro tip for others, open the trunk before disconnecting the power...

    Jake, thank-you so much for your video. I also have a 2022 Subaru Outback Limited and would not have had the nerve to do this install myself on a new car without watching your video many times. Everything from the listing of the tools needed to identifying the proper fuse locations was very helpful. Thanks.

    Thanks for posting, mine is a UK model, and we have an extra camera behind the mirror. Also the bolts in the roof, are not easy to access, so chickened out and put the camera next to the RHS eyesight camera. All the panels and roof linings were OK but the grab handels over the rear door defeated me but managed to tuck the wires underneath the airbags.Notched the rear plastic panel in the back door. It wouldn't close when I re connected the battery. Pulled it closed, it locked, switch ignition off and on again and all is well. Your video was really helpful, I owe you a pint or two!

    Thanks! Needed some visuals from back seat area to the hatchback. I ran my wires along the bottom of the door sills and followed the big bundle of wires that went from the front to back under the step mouldings, which was super easy then back up to the rear of the passenger door area.

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, I tried the bottom of the door sill route on the next install I did but the wires ran a little short (like 6 inches short) so I had to pull them out and install in the headliner like I did on this one. I do like the bottom door sill install better, since it doesn't mess with getting in the way of airbags.

    Fantastic! Thank you for showing how to remove the trim! Great attention to detail, especially the part about avoiding the airbags. I wonder, does your rear red light cast interference on the backup camera when that light is on?

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked at some night time footage from the rear camera and there wasn't any interference or problems with the exposure or contrast when the brake light was on. There is some red light that is cast on the street and a little reflection of red light on some of the car body that is in the frame, but I think that is a good thing since it shows that your brake light was working if someone rear ends you.

    Great video, thank you! I'll be watching it multiple times before attempting to install my new dash cam on my '22 Outback. Quick question: The mounting location on your windshield - still no issues with EyeSight mounting it right below the rear view mirror mount? Also, have you had any issues with the auto high beam feature since mounting the camera there? I'm worried about where the car's sensors are for the auto high beam feature, which is something I use. Thanks in advance!

      I've added a parts list to the video description. I had a kit with various size fuse taps, but for this Outback I needed the low profile mini fuses (LP-Mini).

    Fantastic video! Thanks for taking the time. I'm wondering about the rear camera. Are you still happy with the location? Is it in the way when you look through the rear view mirror being dead center? Is there another location you would have preferred? Thanks!

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That location in the center seems to be pretty good. The camera is mostly out of the way, I don't notice it when looking in the rearview mirror. I suppose I could mount it down low on the rear window, but then I think I'd notice it.

    hello good video, can I hire you for doing that job in my Subaru Impreza, jajajaj., very instructive video. and also why did you choose VIOFO dash cam instead another brand do think that's better than another one?

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I chose the Viofo cam based on a previous one that I had bought several years ago that was still working well. When I bought that first dash cam I researched a lot on forums and came up with a good idea of what was a good value for performance cam. I'm not really tied to any specific brand. I've installed several of the A119/A129 duo cameras and all of them work without any problems so far. I would suggest looking at wiki on r/dashcam on reddit (www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/wiki/index/) which will have up to date recommendations on cameras.

    Awesome video. This helped me get my Thinkware F200 Pro front/rear dashcam installed on my new 2022 Outback Onyx XT, hardwired to an external Thinkware battery to provide power during parking mode. I do have a question though. How were you able to tell the fuse ratings of the unused fuse slots? Like, I don't understand how you knew from the fuse diagram that the bottom right was ACC and the other one was constant power, since the fuse diagram shows only shows a line through those slots. For my setup, I hardwired using an external battery supply into the bottom right ACC like you did. Everything was good for about a month, but the last 2 days, I've gone out to start my car and the CAR battery was dead and needed to be jumped, which suggests that power is still getting pulled from my car battery during parking mode :(. I'm wondering if I'm using the wrong fuse slot...

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a multi-meter (DC voltage setting) to detect if the empty fuse slots were constant power or switched with the ignition. With the car off, I put the meter's black probe on a grounding location and then just probed both sides of each empty fuse slot with the red probe to see if it registered ~12 volts. Then I did the same with the ignition on. That should allow you to note which of those slots show no voltage when the car is off and which are constant.
      I'll have another video pretty soon that just focuses on checking those fuses with a multi-meter.

      If you don’t require the always on of connecting to fuse box just mount it and run the wire in the headliner and under the weatherstripping on the passenger side down to glovebox. My 2023 has a cigarette plug in the box so I just use that and you literally can’t see any of the power wire except for the short distance to the headliner from the camera. I leave it plugged in and the camera turns on as soon as I start the car.

    If you disconnect the battery wouldn't that create problems for the cars computer system?

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not in my experience (which isn't really worth much). The car's computer managed to keep all the settings through the battery disconnect. Once I hooked the battery back up everything was as we had setup on that car. It probably has a smaller backup battery for the radio/computer or stores the settings in non-volatile memory.

    is taking apart the eyesight housing necessary or can you work around it?

    • @jakesdiy197
      @jakesdiy197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this car I could not slip the cables between the eyesight housing and the windshield above the sensor, the housing was too tight to the glass. Maybe other cars will have more room depending on the fit of the plastics and windshield from the factory. I think you could run the cable without removing that eyesight housing by taping the cables to the windshield as high as possible in front of the sensor, it looks like that might avoid the sensor. The housing was pretty easy to take down once I figured out where all the screws and plastic tabs were. The hardest part was getting over the fear of taking apart a new car and screwing something up. Hopefully I showed where those screws and tabs are so you don't have to pry and poke around like I did to find them.
