A little bit of a raw experience for me in my Model 3;I was cruising along fine in FSD and lane lines ran out where two lanes ran into one.I had Tesla confusion, fantom braking, and words trying to cancel and get my driving back in order.Just got the Model 3 in Late June,2020.Whew!!

Nice review; only played a bit with mine but was impressed. Anxious to see if phantom braking has been addressed on curved roads with parked cars on the right.

Yes I received an invite email for infotainment upgrade. But I had to remind them it included the hardware 3 upgrade as well all the way until install so had to be persistent but they were awesome and I'm upgraded as we speak.
Dropped off at Service at 9:am done the following day by 10:am but firmware failed so should have been done first day by 5:pm so plan for it they said it's common for it to fail and have to start all over.
Something I saw another TH-camr do was if you put the car in adaptive cruise control, it will still stop for lights, stop signs and T intersections. This way for cases where there are no lines you could still test how well it detects them
6:25 I think, you can overwrite it in turning lanes because it doen't recognize the arrows on the traffic light, but you can't if you continue driving straight
Great video. I just pick up my 2020 Model S 2 days and still thinking about the $7k full self-driving feature and watching your video help me with 70% that I want that feature.
I’ve driven a model 3 once and got the same “High curvature detected” notification and realized it was because there was a pretty big bend in the road where I was driving. I was caught of guard because the car maneuvered pretty sharply to maintain its lane while driving around the curve
I tend to use the accelerator peddle to confirm so that the stalk is not over used. You have the best reviews on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thanks I like the stalk because its easy to press quickly and doesn't pose a danger like the pedal...i usually drive with Ludicrous acceleration so if I press to quick or hard it could pose a problem.
Black Tesla I love your Tesla videos! But funny story sort of related to that - last Friday, I had a red light and stopped behind a police cruiser in my Volt using the radar cruise control. When the light turned green, I tapped the accelerator to go, but it acted like the brakes were stuck on. I kept pushing and letting off the accelerator but it still wouldn't hardly go. Meanwhile, the front collision warning started to carry on like the Armageddon was going on even though the cop was pulling away from me and I wasn't keeping up. After a few seconds of me wondering what broke, either the cruise control finally gave up on its own and disengaged itself or I finally hit the brake to disable it myself, not sure which. But as soon as it disengaged, it responded to my foot on the pedal and peeled out like I was a teenager who just watched a Fast and Furious movie. Right behind the cop! Good lord, I've never let off the gas so quick in my life. Thankfully the cop either couldn't tell who it was or didn't hear it or didn't want to bother with it, so nothing happened, but man, I was sure I was going to get pulled over! What I'm pretty sure happened in retrospect is some kind of interference with the cop's radar that caused my cruise control to freak out and try to avoid a collision that wasn't actually about to happen, since the Volt only relies on radar, and, at low speeds and short distances, sonar, and only uses the camera for lane keeping. So the radar from the cop confused the radar on my cruise control, made it fail safe and react as if it was avoiding a collision, and prevented me from going more than 2-3 MPH until it errored out and disabled itself (it wouldn't allow me to re-engage it after this until I power cycled the car). But as soon as it disengaged, it let the full electric torque do its thing because by that time my foot was well onto the pedal trying to get out of the way of traffic. That's probably the only time I'll ever be glad not to have a Tesla with ludicrous mode, but your comment made me realize that using the stalk probably is the wiser option. I may switch to using the button on my Volt until I get my Tesla too. Good thinking!
Another good video. Certainly not level 5 yet but still getting better. I also appreciate that you must live in Essex county because I recognize all of the roads that you travel on. You actually went past my street in the previous video, lol.
BT, as always, great addition to our understanding of this beast. Two questions: 1) what happens when you confirm on a green light at 600 yards, but light goes yellow at 400 yards? 2) do you get the impression that the steering wheel “nag” occurs more frequently on city streets? Thanks.
Thanks. 1) if you confirm on approach to green and the light changes it will adhere to the yellow and red. 2) the same interval but the speed in which you drive being slower makes it seem more frequent because you cover less distance.
I just purchased a 2017 MS P100D with FSD, are the videos with the new model 3's FSD better because they're newer? I see their autopilot make turns through the city and what not. Is it possibly because I have the MCU 1 or maybe because Im in a smaller town? as of now, my fsd is just like this one show cased
If you Velcro a 1lb wrist weight around the steering wheel (left side above controls), it registers as hand on wheel. You can cruise highways no hands whatsoever.
I know these roads currently looking to buy a 2018 model s with auto pilot would love to see an updated video with your experience 3 years later with all the updates and how it’s driving now compared to how it was when they first released the beta. I’m also in Jersey from your video that looked like north area in central north too that’s why it looked so familiar to me but great video man
Howdy neighbor, we've since sold that car so we've not been keeping up with updates to that model. I would say that if you're in the market go for a 2020 or newer model S. The lack of support and upgrades for anything older is pretty bad. From a price perspective you would also be better off getting a new or used 3 if you are cost constrained as they will have better hardware. Best of luck.
Vehicular cyclists. also known as "bicycle commuters," are a brave bunch. However, we are curious as to whether a robocar can detect and negotiate with cyclists at intersections. We often deal with human drivers who do not-so we learn to use techniques such as hand signals, speed control, and timing. For example, I plan routes that prioritize four-way stops, then as I approach such an intersection, I slow down to scan the situation, signaling already-stopped drivers to go ahead, so that by the time I reach the intersection proper, I usually can then go straight through without coming to a full stop. This is known as an "Idaho stop," because that was the first state to legalize it. What this means is that vehicular cyclists treat stop signs as yield signs and traffic lights as stop signs-when unoccupied. (Just in case you were wondering why we do this: it's because of the extra effort to get a bike rolling from a full stop. BTW, electric-assist bikes don't have this problem; plus through years of practicing and improving my personal execution of the Idaho stop, I rarely use hand signals anymore, as timing and speed control suffice to take care of most intersections.) As everything begins to go electric-even electric tractor-trailer rigs, which will eventually also become self-driving-we choose to participate in the quality of the code: the software that drives these things. It's a brave new world. Let's build it together. linuxcyclist@tutanota.com
Wouldn't the AI decision making be difficult in a 4 way yield, especially during road work. Like would it stop or just go ahead. Idk how they would do that in the future
Fair question/critique. The current state of local Autopilot is not very useful, but Tesla is being extremely cautious rolling this technology out so they make you more involved than one would expect. Highway autopilot is much more useful and takes a lot of stress from long and/or monotonous trips.
Thanks for the suggestion. We are definitely not fans of the picture-in-picture setup so we go closer to the display when we want focus on the display and further back when we want to focus on the driving experience.
Looking to buy a Tesla. How do I verify if it has FSD or not? I looked on autopilot settings and did not see the FSD setting like in this video. I did see summon though
I've had plenty of time to aimlessly drive and test this new feature since I'm still stuck at home, awesome video good summary of all the AP features at the current time.
@@BlackTesla to be honest, it's 50/50. The advancement is undoubtedly fantastic! But sometimes it brakes hard at the end, brakes for phantom stop sign and stoplines. What's important is this the WORST this feature will ever be, it'll only be improved from this point on functionality. And that is what's exciting
I want to ask. Obviously the model X is different interior wise, but has the same set up as model S. Where exactly do you have your camera placed for that ideal FOV?
awesome unbiased review, not a Tesla fanboi kind of review. Thanks for doing this. Just a few thoughts, BT: 1. It would be interesting to know how this would work in other countries such as India, Egypt, Philippines where the traffic conditions are significantly different. Their driver behavior is very agressive due to the amount of traffic, especially in the metros. 2. In the Commonwealth countries such as Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, the centre line of the roads are white whilst the shoulder lines are yellow. Tesla will have region-specific settings for each country.
Thanks for the comment. 1) Teslas are being sold in many countries and undoubtedly those countries as well as the countries you listed have vastly different traffic conditions and arguably more advanced and aggressive based on density. Which is why regulatory approval is needed before these features are allowed in those countries. That said, from what I have seen in places like Europe and Netherlands it seems like these features would operate much like they do here in the states but due to the congestion and aggressiveness of other drivers may prove to be less useful in current form. 2) Similar to above Australia also has Teslas and pending regulatory approval these more advanced features will be released, but may prove to be more useful based on the longer less congested roads. With each iteration that Tesla is allowed to deploy they add country specific driving logic such as the local traffic signs, and lane markings so that it can work in that region as expected.
my dad finally got his model y long range, its red, it came from cali he wanted it from Texas because i think the 4680 battery, the long range model y still is fast af lol, hes like a little kid, seems like it goes threw the battery more then usual but we turned the climate off unless we go somewhere, i think next car i will get is Tesla
Congrats! Yes they are still learning and fine tuning the 4680 cells so it's a work in progress. However when they are ready it's a simple software update and you will either have more range and/or greater efficiency.
Well explained. At about the 8 minute mark you were entering the highway on the on-ramp and there was a Yield sign. I assume that FSD cannot handle that situation and that you checked to your left for merging traffic.
It can handle the yield if another car was coming it does that surprisingly well. When there is no car it just blows through the sign so yeah I check just to be sure.
Thanks looks great been offered full self driving upgrade on my model X EAP, now for £2900 in UK but can not find out if the HW 3 Computer is available in UK
I have lots of friends in the UK and the general consensus is that people are buying now while the price is low but they know they are not likely to get features based on the UK regulatory process.
Perfection is a never ending pursuit. However, you are right that a really good self-driving car is years away, but we are taking part in the foundations of getting to that point and quite the ride.
Looks like HW2.0 doesn’t get this feature, you need to get the AP upgrade for any of this to work. I’m currently on 2020.12.11.5, and still no sign of this feature.
What's a reasonable length of time to wait for the FSD upgrade to be installed? I purchased the upgrade in August of 2019. I own a 2017 model X. I enjoy your timely updates, just disappointed I'm not able to check out the features offered in these Tesla software updates without the FSD package. Thanks for all you do.
Its hard to say, check with your service center. Prior to the pandemic car made before 2019 were supposed to be up for installs before end Q2 2020 but everything has been delayed.
Schedule appointment in mobile app and see if they approve you for HW3 upgrade. They will respond either way via text letting you know YAY or NAY. I'm an early VIN 2018 model 3. I scheduled service for an issue, and added request in notes for HW3 upgrade and they told me today I qualify and should be getting it installed tomorrow!
Just a few questions: does it reverse well? Like out of a parking spot for instance or out of a drive way? I also noticed that it didn’t yield when you took that exit
It does reverse very well but cautiously. It proceeded through the yield sign appropriately. You're supposed to yield or stop for a merging vehicle and if no vehicle is present you can proceed through normally, that's why a yield sign is also called a "give way" sign so that you give way to the merging traffic. In this instance, no car was coming so it went through.
Having got the update a few days ago, I haven't found these latest features particularly useful. In fact they're more work. I don't imagine I'll be using these features very much at all.
Can someone explain what's the benefit of a self-driving feature which requires constant attention and intermittent disengagement? I'm very excited for self-driving cars. Just want to know as a potential soon owner of a Tesla whether FSD is a worthwhile investment.
In current form the FSD/Autopilot suite of features significantly reduces the stress of driving. You won't really appreciate it until you use it for a week or so and then get in a car that doesn't have it. That said this is the safest approach to building out FSD at scale by taking baby steps by having people get used to monitoring the system and then eventually no monitoring is necessary.
Another excellent review. Your good work is greatly appreciated. I certainly agree that fsd in my x on highways is terrific but I don’t have your nerve when using stop light/sign recognition on streets.
I just got my 2020 Model S last week and first I had to wait 3 days till the maps got downloaded properly to use the stop and light feature. Also, I noticed that you have to choose this option every time you start the car, it doesn't automatically go on when you start the car like in autopilot, correct?
Congrats on the Model S! Once you enable the traffic light control it will stay on you don't need to enable it every time. The one caveat is if you use an easy entry profile, if you turn it on while in that profile it will only be for that profile and not your driving profile. So make sure you are in your driving profile before you enable it and it should b persist.
@@BlackTesla You are right, when I enabled the light traffic control I was in my easy entry profile. So you have to make sure you are in your profile when you enable this feature, and probably all features I assume.
No, that's for the Beta, users press a button to send the footage to Tesla to review. Normal behavior is to disengage or re-engage at your discretion and no button presses are needed.
Maybe it's because I am in my 50s and prefer a car to be a car and an app to be an app, but I can't be the only one who has zero interest in self driving. Why would anyone pay 50k for a car and then not drive it. I like driving. I want to drive the damn thing myself. Talk is about how great it is that it will drive itself to the door to pick you up. Might as well just call an Uber and save yourself 50 grand.
Thanks for the comment and candor. As you can see from a lot of the comments lots of people share the same sentiment. However, I'd like to just remind everyone that you don't have to pay for these features its totally optional. Furthermore, even if you pay for them you don't have to use them you can drive manually as much as you'd like. That said I LOVE driving my Tesla its addictive and I make up excuses to drive somewhere I love it so much. However, on long boring stretches of road or in traffic Autopilot is invaluable and keeps me fresh as opposed to feeling weary when driving. Aside from that as I mentioned in other comments this tech is not just for those that don't want to drive but its useful for those that are elderly 60+ and disabled and driving isn't an easy task. So it has its place for each person and if you're one that enjoys driving then don't get the full self-driving features and enjoy 😉
The problem is that a computer has to compete with the unpredictability of human drivers so more work is required at the moment. Overtime as the system learns more about human drivers and more cars get computers it will be less work and more progress.
On local roads yes, on Highways not so much. If anything the paradigm shift of giving control to the car is what takes more work mentally but once the world gets over that it's much easier.
I think it depends on how what Tesla currently has performs after the major rewrite they are doing to take advantage of the new hardware. That will be the tell of how soon we can see hands off no intervention. Until then and as of right now its at least 2 yrs away. I think the car can accomplish the task but it needs to be able to adapt on the fly to random events and most importantly us flawed human drivers who are very unpredictable.
It almost seems easier to just drive the car yourself. I guess it would work quite well on the highways though. EDIT - You're on the highway towards the end of the vid and yes it works really well.
This is like a training time for this to become automatic, basically confirming the lights trains the computer and sends that info to Tesla to eventually make the system good enough to be automatic and not need a driver at all
Just a correction here, confirming for lights doesn't train the system it already knows what lights are and has a map of all lights and intersections which is why it can tell you that a light is coming in 600ft without seeing it. Instead the system is trained by disengagement. Everytime Autopilot is disengaged that info is sent to Tesla for analysis to understand why the disengagement happened. 😉
Not certain, but I suspect that since the lane was wider than normal it sought to align itself closely to the double yellow line in the event that the lane got so wide it couldn't draw a right lane line.
Probably it was trying to get more to the center, but when it steered a little to the left, it realised it wasn't enough so tried to steer even more until it also realised it was at a really low speed
Tesla needs lots of data provided by owners to trIn its AI and Neural Net in addition to significant enhancements to its software to make FSD a reality. Id say realistically 2yrs at least, which gives them time to refine all of the above and gain the necessary regulatory approval in the U.S.
By 2030 every will be fixed full and it will drive you from home to work and back with you even touching it plus you can call the car on your phone work it will drive it self from home and come pick you up without and problem
If I was on autopilot the car would mirror the behavior of the tesla it was following since it adapts the speed of the car in front. However it may initiate a lane change if the leading Tesla was the only on phantom braking.
@@BlackTesla Yes - I agree it would mirror the speed of car A - do you think your car (B) would brake as hard (technically not Phantom braking since there is a reason) ? or would car B smooth out the hard braking ? Granted this is a BETA period - I was thinking more in the abstract - would you find it pleasurable to drive behind a Tesla that was: slowing down for a green light; stopping for a parked car; Phantom braking ; changing lanes at weird places; hanging in the passing lane; etc. m3 owner with 18,000 miles
It would be interesting if Tesla could listen for the siren, and see flashing lights, of an ambulance, police car or fire truck and slow down and pull over.
They have to make happen some other features first, but that will for sure be addressed within some time. The same way they train the neural net with traffic lightened stop signs (collecting all sorts of corner cases from the "fleet") they will train it with ambulances etc.
If you have a family of 4 or if you have kids that use a car seat Model X is the way to go. If you don't have that large of a family but like to sit higher on the road than an S or 3 then check out the Model Y.

i don't get it. If you have to monitor it 100% of the time why not just drive it yourself.
Fair question/critique. The current state of local Autopilot is not very useful, but Tesla is being extremely cautious rolling this technology out so they make you more involved than one would expect. Highway autopilot is much more useful and takes a lot of stress from long and/or monotonous trips.
You should use one camerea for filming the road and one camerea for the display/wheel and put out that image in the bottom right corner
Imagine one day buying a Tesla on Amazon and having it deliver itself to your house the same day.
U will just believe ❤️
I've had plenty of time to aimlessly drive and test this new feature since I'm still stuck at home, awesome video good summary of all the AP features at the current time.
Do you find the new local AP useful?
@@BlackTesla to be honest, it's 50/50. The advancement is undoubtedly fantastic! But sometimes it brakes hard at the end, brakes for phantom stop sign and stoplines. What's important is this the WORST this feature will ever be, it'll only be improved from this point on functionality. And that is what's exciting
I want to ask. Obviously the model X is different interior wise, but has the same set up as model S. Where exactly do you have your camera placed for that ideal FOV?
On my chest
awesome unbiased review, not a Tesla fanboi kind of review. Thanks for doing this.
Just a few thoughts, BT:
Insightful.....Thanks, appreciate u taking the time out to respond
So helpful, thank you! Upgraded yesterday - excited to try it out. Maybe I’ll see you in Parsippany at the supercharger 🙂
Thanks for the video!
my dad finally got his model y long range, its red, it came from cali he wanted it from Texas because i think the 4680 battery, the long range model y still is fast af lol, hes like a little kid, seems like it goes threw the battery more then usual but we turned the climate off unless we go somewhere, i think next car i will get is Tesla
Congrats! Yes they are still learning and fine tuning the 4680 cells so it's a work in progress. However when they are ready it's a simple software update and you will either have more range and/or greater efficiency.
@@BlackTesla thanks for the reply, do you think you will get a cybertruck when it come out? or keep your nice looking model s lol
I'm not a pickup guy so probably not. Just the S,X, and Roadster for us.
@@BlackTesla hope i can make enough trading stocks in a few years to get one maybe the model y, but i like them all def the model s and x lol
Has much changed with the autopilot features since you’ve made the video? Also do you think it’s worth it for 10,000 dollars? Thanks
Things have changed, but hold off until the week after next when we compare this same drive with FSD Beta. The changes should be exponentially better.
Black Tesla I will thanks
Well explained. At about the 8 minute mark you were entering the highway on the on-ramp and there was a Yield sign. I assume that FSD cannot handle that situation and that you checked to your left for merging traffic.
It can handle the yield if another car was coming it does that surprisingly well. When there is no car it just blows through the sign so yeah I check just to be sure.
What MCU u have ? Mine 2.0 , it's 4k upgrade for me, not sure if I should go for FSC
MCU2
Thanks looks great been offered full self driving upgrade on my model X EAP, now for £2900 in UK but can not find out if the HW 3 Computer is available in UK
I have lots of friends in the UK and the general consensus is that people are buying now while the price is low but they know they are not likely to get features based on the UK regulatory process.
I enjoy your videos! Great Job!
How many years away from the perfect self driving car. If it’s dependent on the involvement of A.I then it might not happen for several years.
Perfection is a never ending pursuit. However, you are right that a really good self-driving car is years away, but we are taking part in the foundations of getting to that point and quite the ride.
Does it have auto pilot 2.0 or 2.5?
FSD aka autopilot 3.0
Some states have flashing yellow arrows for turns. How does autopilot behave with those?
The more I test the more I see it has issues with flashing lights yellow or otherwise.
When the car is self driving do you still need to press on the gas pedal or you can just chill and leave your foot off the pedals
Just rest a hand on the wheel and the car does everything else.
@@BlackTesla I'ma save up to get one mainly cause I'm lazy and don't feel like driving myself lol
Looks like HW2.0 doesn’t get this feature, you need to get the AP upgrade for any of this to work. I’m currently on 2020.12.11.5, and still no sign of this feature.
Thats correct you need hardware 3.0 and the full self-driving feature enabled.
Black Tesla
Ah okay got you. So if there was a car present the car would sense that and yield for you?
Noted you didn’t pull to the right and stop when the ambulance passed...oncoming or not! Otherwise enjoyed your tutorial.
I’m saving for a Model X
Having got the update a few days ago, I haven't found these latest features particularly useful. In fact they're more work. I don't imagine I'll be using these features very much at all.
Yes lots more work than helpful at the moment but its a step in the right direction
Kool video, I'm surprised they haven't released something that can spot potholes yet.
79bnice they will be solving it shortly with computer vision
Black Tesla Okay, thanks. That makes perfect sense to me. I appreciate the crowdsourced approach to the development of the autonomous tech.
What do you do for a living?
Entrepreneur and Investor
No update has been made, your confirmation is ignored if the car thinks it’s red.
What year is yours?
Very cool video
Do you have to press a button every time you disengage ?! That’s a real pain!
No, that's for the Beta, users press a button to send the footage to Tesla to review. Normal behavior is to disengage or re-engage at your discretion and no button presses are needed.
Fantastic video!
Great commentary
The workload certainly increases with the autopilot on - is this progress?
The problem is that a computer has to compete with the unpredictability of human drivers so more work is required at the moment. Overtime as the system learns more about human drivers and more cars get computers it will be less work and more progress.
What year is the Tesla in the video?
Kinda seems like using AP takes more concentration than just driving yourself
On local roads yes, on Highways not so much. If anything the paradigm shift of giving control to the car is what takes more work mentally but once the world gets over that it's much easier.
as someone who uses self driving and auto pilot a lot, what would you realistically guess as a timeframe for non-human intervention place to place?
Why did the wheel do that weird ‘left’ adjustment at 3:15 ? Strange.
Hey what year is your model s?
2019
Tesla Self drive sistem is same level as volvo or higher then volvo ?
Higher
New Jersey?, holy shit I know that Whole Foods you past by
So speed limits aren't "limits" in America? I don't get it, here in Germany you really only drive as fast (+10%) as the sign says
Apparently not, people drive way faster than the limit which puts drivers that drive the limit at risk.
What dots does Tesla need to connect to release FSD? And how far do you think we are from FSD?
Tesla needs lots of data provided by owners to trIn its AI and Neural Net in addition to significant enhancements to its software to make FSD a reality. Id say realistically 2yrs at least, which gives them time to refine all of the above and gain the necessary regulatory approval in the U.S.
By 2030 every will be fixed full and it will drive you from home to work and back with you even touching it plus you can call the car on your phone work it will drive it self from home and come pick you up without and problem
No more uber then yay !!
Why do you have to slow down for an ambulance that's not on your side of the road or behind you?
It’s the law in NY
Great vid
So would you continue driving behind another Tesla, if the driver was having Phantom braking and weird ‘lane change to Follow Route’ issues ?
What city is this?
It would be interesting if Tesla could listen for the siren, and see flashing lights,
of an ambulance, police car or fire truck and slow down and pull over.
They have to make happen some other features first, but that will for sure be addressed within some time. The same way they train the neural net with traffic lightened stop signs (collecting all sorts of corner cases from the "fleet") they will train it with ambulances etc.
Sounds a lot like Neil deGrasse Tyson!!
Agree ,,,very very nice 👍
Is that a Wawa at the end?!
Yes Wawa has a partnership with Tesla for supercharging.
This in definitely Montclair
Can you do another smart summon video, to see if it will stop at stop signs?
We are waiting for the code rewrite before doing another smart summon video. As of now its basically the same and hasn't gotten "smarter".
@@BlackTesla oh ok
What year is your Model S?
So it doesn’t turn for you? That’s a bit disappointing.
it doesn't make full 90 degree turns just yet.
Nice overview. Thanks. Thinking about purchasing it for our X. Still not sure yet.
If you have a family of 4 or if you have kids that use a car seat Model X is the way to go. If you don't have that large of a family but like to sit higher on the road than an S or 3 then check out the Model Y.
What's the year of your Model S?
