Staying in old Miner's Cabin (near Yellowstone) in Snow

  • Staying in an old miner's cabin just outside of Yellowstone National Park during a snow storm. This cabin was built around 1880 by a guy named Horn Miller who some historians have dubbed "The Toughest Man in Montana." The interior walls of the cabin aren't like anything I've ever seen before either.
This cabin is located at 9,000 ft elevation. It's surrounded by gorgeous mountains and I frequently film moose and grizzly bears in this area.

I'm 74 and have lived in the mountains for 15 years now. The first thing you learn up here is be prepared...and obviously you weren't. That high up weather can change in an instant..you never go out like this without extra food..real food..extra water..extra clothes..and for Gosh Sakes GLOVES. Also a small propane cook stove and a pan..that way you have heat and food in case you run into what you did. Your just very lucky that you didn't get snowed in up there for a few days...and the wild things were there first so they will share a place out of the weather with you as long as you leave them alone.

Chery, thanks for your concern. I've spent my entire life in these mountains (our cabin is only a few miles away) so I was prepared for just about anything, except Hantavirus, including being snowed in. Just because I don't show something on camera doesn't mean I don't have it (like extra food, water, and supplies in the car), and as for the gloves, you can see me wearing them in the video lol, but I have to take them off to adjust the settings on my camera. The wild things were there first like you mentioned. That's why I left. All the people who think I should have stayed either don't know about Hantavirus, or don't care if I live or die, but I do.

I've been there! About ten years ago while vacationing in the town of Yellowstone we drove up there. Didn't spend the night and didn't see any bear but we saw a large pack of wolves.
I don't blame you for not sticking around with the mice. Although cute, they and other vermin carrie a variety of diseases and viruses.

Great video! I lived in Montana in Gardiner for 7 years, so I appreciate this first hand. I feel that this cabin was originally a trapper's cabin, later perhaps used as a fence-riding cowboy's winter home, and most recently (probably still is) used as a hunter's cabin.

I have done some historical preservation work in a few national parks. I have also hunted, camped and bivouacked in high alpine country, boreal and montane forests, high plains and deserts. Almost the first thought that enters my mind upon seeing such an old dilapidated structure is the vermin that likely inhabit it.
Aside from potential disease vectors, such as the Hantavirus you mentioned or even Bubonic Plague if a person is very unlucky, they can be nearly as annoying as insect swarms and much more damaging to gear and supplies. I'll look around such old cabins and shacks because I find them historically interesting; but I won't sleep in them unless forced to by an emergency. Sounds like you might understand why I prefer the forest floor or even a rocky shelf to place my bedroll.
I did have a mouse companion that didn't bother me too much a number of miles north of Miller's cabin when I dug through drifted snow to burrow in under a rock slab to bivouac decades ago. It was already the mouse's home, and I was the intruder seeking shelter from winds whose gusts exceeded the 65 MPH peak of my wind gauge. The wind had been lifting and disintegrating slabs of snow crust and pelting me with the grit for most of the day and had already taken me off my feet twice earlier on the hunt. That mouse was a good host and didn't chew up any of my gear. Its company was much preferable to the weather outside or the prospect of dropping down about 1000' lower on the mountain into the lodgepole stands for the night.
By the way, that was some beautiful light you captured during the drive and drone flight into the site; and short segment of that trio of bull moose was fantastic!

@@RyanThayne You're welcome Ryan. If you don't mind a bit of elaboration, I had a couple miserable nights of backpack camping in my early twenties that has made me eschew, as much as practical, camping in spots frequented by other campers.
The first one was under a big boulder that cantilevered over a flat spot directly beside the Suiattle River Trail in the Glacier Peak Wilderness in Washington State in about 1970 as I recall. It looked like an absolutely perfect place to spend a night without having to pitch a tent. A spring actually flowed within a yard or two of the rock! Unfortunately, the spot had looked perfect to countless previous hikers too. Food crumbs scattered about the site had evidently made it an even more perfect campground for hordes of mice--well, hordes to me, though they wouldn't seem so to an Aussie who had ever experienced mouse hordes on that continent. I got very little sleep that night as I was repeatedly awakened by feeling the little critters scampering over my sleeping bag, and even the sounds of them chewing on the remaining portion of a Hershey's Chocolate With Almonds bar that I hadn't finished that evening. (I had placed it in my hat, which I then placed just beyond the stuff sack I used as a pillow so that I would have it handy should I desire a late night snack--I was not very bear-aware in those days.)
One incident was not enough to impress the lesson evidently, because I pitched camp beside the Elwha River in an obviously well-used site a few years later. There, ants were the pest! Since then, I've made it a point to seek out secluded and undisturbed sites for my camps as much as practical. Seeing, and smelling, how badly some people foul the near vicinity of campsites with their own waste has confirmed my preference all-the-more over the decades elapsed. Learning about vector-borne diseases has simply reinforced the lessons!

City people going in the mountains unprepared is not wise. You should always take enough food with you for a couple days especially if it is snowing. I have seen it many times when a storm comes out of nowhere and people get stuck and almost freeze to death because they were unprepared. Without cell service and your car when you are unprepared, mice are the least of your issues.

Beautiful land, even during that snowstorm. BTW old Miller was interviewed at some point and supposedly said he shot a lot of Indians but never checked them lol. But seriously that was some hard living out there, my respects to them pioneers.

Pretty sure the big mining companies that moved in later tore it all down. Then they had to clean everything up when they left, but I'm glad they left this cabin.
