This number was the crown jewel of all of the movie's musical numbers. Excellent work in all departments. Choreography, costume, make up, obviously the theme for the song and how it reflects Satine's situation at that moment in regards of the duke. It checks all the boxes. Stunning sequence!
I love how Satine says the final "friend" and her cold look becomes bleak, as she gives up, and after the Sultan says "she is mine" she looks away, subtly indicating she doesn't really believe in her own words but is resigned to her fate. Superb acting! Also, though you don't see it here in the extended scene, how the Sultan's greedy expression, as he sits in the chair in the beginning facing away from the crowd, is the focus of the camera for a moment. But then it fuzzes and re-focuses behind him, on blonde mustache villain-dude wearing the same expression as he eyes Satine. Again, good acting, and good show-not-tell choice for the film-makers! Really, this was a better movie than some give it credit for. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it knows what it is and isn't, but still delivers good, enjoyable performances.
The inclusion of an Indian song in this movie paid a proper tribute to the director's source of inspiration. Bahz Luhrmann once stated the whole concept of making this movie was derived after watching a Bollywood film in India.
yes Caroline O'Connor's choreography here reminds me a lot of the genius work by mudhari dixit. the sequence in devas is exquisite. ironically the French he'd lots of asian influences in the original days of the moulin rouge over 100 years ago and if you were an 'exotic' personage and talented like Josephine baker you were completely worshipped.
The parts where you can see the entire stage is so awesome! Everyone’s doing something different, there are so many different colors, so much going on. Also I love (but hate) Nicole Kidman’s acting in this scene. Satine is trying to act but you can tell her heart’s not into it. She’s just so sad and emotionless. The ending shot she’s just like “I give up..I don’t care anymore…” which is completely heartbreaking but awesome acting on Nicole Kidman’s part because she pulled it off so well
'I only Speak the truth, I only speak the truth ' Indeed, this film speaks more truth than anyone can realise., in every single scene. She is like the queen of the damned ones, the zombies. She is being sacrificed and Her sad eyes betraying her words "Diamonds (demons) girl's best friend "
This song and scene is so awesome. The best in this song is awesome, the costumes in the scene are gorgeous..I love how well Nicole Kidman portrayed Satine in this scene. She’s trying to act but clearly is heartbroken and Nicole pulled it off perfectly
This uncut scene alone would have been worth the price of admission. You've heard of a "wall of sound"; this is a "wall of dance". There are so many things going on that your eyes don't know whether to admire the main dancers, or the flag wavers, or the women swinging their skirts, or the acrobats, or the god and the little person dancing at the top...and you completely ignore this guy at 0:50, bottom left, third from the left, who starts dancing out of sync. I'm pretty sure that was left in for two reasons: 1.) Like I said, ur just overwhelmed by the beauty of the spectacle, and 2.) Since it's the first performance, it's natural for there to be some goofs.
He's not out of sync, he's just dancing more enthusiastically than the others. His moves are the same, he's just executing them with more body flexibility and excitement.
I’ve commented this before on this song, but if someone asks you to explain Baz Luhrmann filmmaking style to them, literally just show them this scene, because this has Luhrmann written all over it. It is so quintessentially him.
I think this scene is the reason why I shifted from goth to clown in terms of colour pallet. Also, this movie and Nicole Kidman made me realise I was into women.

This is certainly a very great version and I absolutely love it. The only criticism I have is that the music and the voices just aren't loud enough for my liking. Personally if they were speaking and singing louder then it would have given them that real oomph it requires. Because this is something that needs to be in your face. Am I right?

It's interesting how Zidler portrays the Maharajah in such a malignant way in this sequence considering the Duke wants this show to end with him claiming the Courtesan, just as he wants Satine for himself. He clearly doesn't mind him coming off as the villainous tyrant which confirms how proud he is of his own narcissism and psychopathy when it comes to getting what he wants.
