Way back in 1978, as a recently graduated guitar major, Pat Metheny was starting make some real noise in the guitar world. The opportunity to hear him in concert was not to be missed. I certainly came away impressed by his talent, but the one who really blew me away was this unknown keyboardist by the name of Lyle Mays.
I was so incredibly sad when I found out Lyle Mays died 😢. A truly gifted musician who will be hard to replace. Metheny + Mays is such a natural fit.... they were together for so long. Even though they had solo projects and collaborated with others, they always worked best with each other. RIP, Maestro Mays. You left us with beautiful music.
@@ChrisBCartagena Hard to imagine both so close together.. they were my two favorites.. I think of Lyle with his "moody" Steinway and Chick with his "bright" Yamaha. @@chrissnyder6787 Chris...thanks for reminding me of that red album, think I nad in back in about 78! Wish Pat M would Produce some new music in the veign of his former concept albums that he did with Lyle ..that was great.. his new pure jazz stuff doesn’t thrill me.
My FAVORITE KEYBOARD PLAYER ‘EVER’ !!!!!! REPLACE?………… impossible, CAN’T BE DONE!!! Lyle CHANGED the direction of my life FOREVER!!! I MISS YA FOREVER LYLE!!! 🙏
My exact feelings about it. I heard it for the very first time very late at night, while it was snowing in the middle of a tiny village lost on the Andes mountains. From then on I realize that I don’t want to spoil that memory, listening it in any other mood. This song IS that distant, dreamy moment in my life
The most sublime music. I had a dream where I met Pat and got to ask him how they conceived this piece. He just looked at me, smiled, and said: "We just did it". I miss Lyle and Pat together more than I can say.

I've heard that music is prayer with no words. Thank you, Lyle, for all the prayers you've provided to so many that will always be there for us to hear and love. RIP.
When I hear this song, it always takes me somewhere else it never took me before. It is truly one of finest musical compositions that I have ever heard, and thus a superb choice as a tribute song to Lyle Mays.
I feel movement love and loss and they dance together in a place where is no space or time ..The genious of GOD using a human to show you a bit of his essence through music..beutius!
Thank you for this beautiful rendition of not only my favorite P.M.G song, but my favorite of any and all songs. R.I.P Lyle and thank you so much for leaving this slice of musical heaven.
Very well played, Walther. An excellente tribute for an outstanding pianist. He has influenced many of us with his sense of complex harmony and beautiful melodies.
I have been very lucky to see the Pat Metheny Group a number of times over the years. The first time was the First Circle tour. They were amazing. I've seen Pat with his other groups as well, but for me, they could never compare to his collaboration with Lyle in the Pat Metheny Group.
So sad. Saw the PMG in a small club in Ann Arbor, Mi in Dec '78 (?) Maybe 20 people there on a weeknight (where our group of friends was 1/2 the crowd). So cool. Blown away. Moved to LA. Crowds were much bigger (eg, Greek Theater size). Moved to Arizona -- filled auditoriums by then (Arizona State Univ Gammage Theatre). Such a talent. RIP
Imposible no emocionarse al escuchar este tremendo tema compuesto por Pat Metheny y Lyle Mays, recordar es transportarse a un mundo mejor,de tranquilidad total,un excelente acorde musical lleno de melodías perfectas...!
Thank you for this sympathetic upload , since Lyle's passing I have kept re listening to the albums from that period of PMG with Pedro et al It was and still is truly inspirational I'm sure Pat &Pedro will agree that the piano of Lyle Mays will live on forever in the groups albums as well as the solo works that Lyle did . Well done!! On a different note, trying to put a smile to the devastating departure of Lyle, i wonder, with a tune like this, the album very well could've been titled "Offvamp"
Oh wow just reading this. When I saw tribute I thought I hope it doesn't mean what I think. Then I came to this and saw birth-death. Agreed. He will be missed.
