I watch your post as often as I can, you two are amazing doing the things you do, I became a prepper 18 years ago, I bring in water, Solar panels, built my own home, heat with wood, it takes a special kind of person to do what your doing, I,m going tobe 71 in November and would not change a thing, keep rocking you two, never give up, 😘

I built an off grid paradise to retire in Martine Canada, I enjoyed this video, and one of my next projects is a wood fire oven off the side of my deck, I wished I'd escaped the urban life 20 years ago, but I'll have a coue decades left to enjoy life off grid in paradise, with my woman's help and God willing, your both still young, you made a wise choice to live in your little piece of heaven, enjoy and blessings you both, from Dale and Kat Val

You two are such a cute couple and extremely enjoyable to watch. I am envious that I didn't know how to find a way when I was young to travel and live off the land when my body was in great shape. Now, at 74, I have been living off-grid for about 10 years. I lost the log home I built to a forest fire and was burglarized two years ago of over $130K in tools and all the windows, pumps, pipes, electrical wiring including thousands of feet of pipe, conduit, appliances, etc that I purchased for my new home I was building when I was hospitalized and away from my property. So, I can't afford to fulfill my dream at this point in my life and am going to have to sell my property. I want to thank you both for uplifting me with sharing your dreams and lifestyle.

@@fredcarani6764 yes, I was so surprised. I'm not prudish but I went to her supporter page(? It's been a while) and went, oh my God! That is nicole! And it was all poses and crap. I think to "support" her you have to pay 50.00 per hour. I think it's great when people go off grid or they take you along building their homestead but I guess I wish they didn't do all that provocative stuff. She is a beautiful woman without all that. I wish she wouldn't set yourself back. I never saw this before with his last wife.

There is the TH-cam way and there is the real world. Jake and Nicole are doing things the real world way. I've cut my share of fire wood over the years and still don't have a pair of chaps. I'm not saying it's not a good idea to wear them since they do a great job of protecting you from mistakes. I've found, however, that having all the PPE just gives you a false sense of security. You still have to watch where you are waving that chainsaw bar and the still-spinning chain. My biggest mistake over the years is finishing a cut and then waving the saw to my left. If I hadn't had a pair of double-front jeans on I would have cut my leg a few times. Age and experience have taught me to control the bar and all times and engage the chain brake when I'm not actually cutting with the saw.
I also get a chuckle out of all the TH-cam gun channels who have to put on a big show of demonstration they have cleared a gun before they start working on it. This is just to assuage the complainers in the comments section who will always call you out if you don't make a big deal about following all the safety steps. Jake and Nicole are just documenting what they are doing on their place and we don't need a bunch of armchair OSHA inspectors pointing out everything they appear to do wrong. Just because they don't spend half the video showing us all the safety precautions they are taking doesn't mean they aren't thinking about all the safety precautions.

I would think with all the fires out west that clearing some of the fuel from around your home would be a good idea. It is nice to have a place in the woods, but you also need to think about what would happen if there was a fire. Creating a break around your house is a smart thing to do to at least give yourselves a chance of making it through without losing everything.

Please consider creating a 3 sided log room approximately 8 foot by 8 foot and 7 foot high. Leave the north side open. Then drill 3 inch holes into the logs about 4 inches apart. Repeat this process several times per log. Use 3 or for 4 types of logs. Maple, birch, fur and a hardwood. Then cover the structure with a black tarp. Seed the holes with mushroom spores of varying types. Within a month you should have a constant flow of harvest able mushrooms. All within your arms reach.

It takes concrete 20 days to cure to reach full strength. It should be kept somewhat wet until fully cured. You should fill in the sides with gravel to avoid breaking off the concrete sides or eroding away the gravel from under the concrete. You can't keep Portland cement very long without using it as it quickly loses its ability to cure to full strength. Always use the cement you buy right away. The sand and gravel used to mix in the concrete should not be from salt water, it should be from a fresh water area source. The water used to mix the concrete should also be fresh not salt water.

As an arborist I suggest you ditch that ladder before you really get hurt like most people do. Before I became an Arborist I came off of the top of a 10-foot ladder working on a tree and when I stood up after hitting the ground both of my bones were sticking out the front of my right leg and my foot was on backwards. I have three steel plates and about 25 screws in my right leg. That's when I decided to invest in some climbing gear. You don't see arborist who work in the trees all the time working off of ladders it's dangerous. Not only that I can tell by the sound that that's one cheap ass ladder. I don't want you hurt. Best wishes.

If there salt in the mix the rebar will have a reaction with the salt the iron will rust and swell, it actually has a name ‘Concrete Cancer’ result loss in strength, however you will or might see cracks but for a small job like this a few cracks not going to make much difference, more interesting is his lack of safety gear when working with tools especially chain saw this has been mentioned so many time that he doesn’t seem to take any notice.

"off the grid" wasn't a term when I dreamed of doing this over 50 years ago. But no opportunity presented.... love the "slow tv" of your vlogs... scenery, wildlife, (noted that Nikers taking a shower has over 5 mill views so far haha... and fair enough too!) Ginseng and Reiishi, Kai and Puma Blue Heelers, aka "tradies padlocks" (popular sight sitting on a toolbox on the back of a chippies, or sparkies, or plumbers etc work vehicle), bears and deer wandering about. Fabulous stuff. But a few points. Not a troll or hater that you speak so much about, but the chainsaw comments are not helpful. Should start saw on the ground.... every time. A kick from a saw that is not running can take Nicole's face off! And no human is fast enough to get out of the way.... even Jake with his martial arts. I've learned about chaps etc seeing what happens to others. Often the victims are lesser skilled operators trying to emulate the actions of an old hand. Just be mindful.... people from the US may be watching.
And concrete slabs. Do not allow metal reinforcing to come within 100mm of the edge of the work. Cured concrete can easily absorb moisture that far into the slab. Contact with metal will cause rust, which will expand the metal and the concrete will fall apart a few years later. Depending on the ambient moisture levels. you say yours are high. Perhaps an an additive to your future concrete mixes may avoid "concrete cancer" which is a real thing.

The thumbnail is the trade mark to attract male viewers to the channel. When they were assembling their yurt we didn't see it but as the videos progressed they must have realized that Nicole's chest, butt and bare back would attract hundreds thousands of male viewers. Their channel is all about regurgitation recently: chopping wood, picking fruit and vegetables , wok cooking. If you would follow Simple Living Alaska and My Self Reliance would not see misleading thumbnails. These channels have extremely loyal viewers who want to learn about Fishing, Hunting, Planting and preserving, canning vegetables for the winter and My Self Reliance, Shawn James builds structures with local timber,

@@OffGridLife Jake, great vids🤘 I'm an experienced tree guy/arborist of 25 years, been felling thousands of trees. Couple tips:
You can buy a cheap throw ball and throw line to set your rope higher in the trees for better leverage. Lookup arborist throw line and you can watch TH-cam vids. Can get all for under$30
Also, cut the cut stumps a bit lower and flee the area once the tree you're felling starts to go because trees can bounce, bounce back, bounce sideways, and it can take you out and be very dangerous
I would never stand next to a falling tree after it's been cut. I've seen some crazy things happen.
