- 🥾 IN THIS EPISODE
It's day two on the Appalachian Trail, and it's the first day with a full pack. We are afraid we have too much gear, so we decide to leave essential equipment behind. We also have a hard time putting up the tent.

You guys are hilarious 😂😂😂 I’m also learning about backpacking along with you!
Sending love ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
The flower is a trillium. Sometimes called purple but it is really more burgundy red.
Thanks. They are really beautiful.
Cheers to the day’s experience. Thanks for the fun commentary and views. Wishing you safe passage and good fortune. Happy Trails!
Thanks! Right back at you.
And what’s wrong with a bidet? Young man! NO mess!!! And it’s easy 🤷🏼🤣
I will convert him don't worry. Too many smelly summer days and it will be easy. Ha.
@@WorldTowning , tell him to grow up 😆
Oh, I tought you talking about a hobo stove... 😂
Love our stove
sending good vibes. Welcome to the east coast
Thanks - It looks amazing from where we are!
This made me quite emotional - watching you start this journey and knowing just how much of a commitment you're making. I'm rooting for you - I have every confidence that you will prevail. You both have fabulous attitudes and are 'outside of the box' thinkers. Loving the Day markers - cool reference to El Camino days...
Thank you for rooting for us! Bringing back some oldies, but goodies from the Camino and it is so fun!
I'm looking forward to this adventure. Of everything you've done, I really loved watching your family walk the Camino. Sending peace, love and light your way. ❤️
Thanks. Those were our favorite vlogs to make and we made so many amazing friends through them. Thanks for being around all these years later.
Looking super profesh right out of the gate! Woohoo! Ok… but I would love to know what you are eating? What was in that mysterious bag that added water to?
Awh, that is very sweet. We will do a vlog or two or three on food. We had big ideas and some of them are not working so revamping now because if it does not excite us to eat it that is not good. We need protein and calories. It's like astronaut food.
When I saw you draw the number 2 in the dirt, it brought me back to your Camino days! Good luck and happy trails!! You got this.
I know, we loved doing that on the Camino! We are bringing back several oldies, but goodies. Happy to have you with us for all these years. This is so much fun.
Great guys enjoying watching you both.
Thanks so much! Happy to have you here!
When you referenced Reese in Wild, i could just see you falling backwards and laughed, im sorry. You all have fun and be safe!!
Oh it has happened so many times. I am quite a show getting my pack on. I can't even imagine 40 pounds.
We watched your Camino , now looking forward to your AT adventure. We hiked it in 2019. Have fun we saw our first bear in New Jersey.
Oh so happy to have you with us all these years later. Congrats on your thru-hike. I hear there are lots of bears in Jersey.
You've got this!
Thanks!!!
30 pounds isn't terrible for backpacking. It's not ultralight, but creature comforts and packing your fears lead to a heavier pack. (I run btw 30 and 35, and I'm a year older than you. I can't go without my chair!)
True, it is not bad, but still would like it between 22-25. When summer comes it will be less. I saw someone with the chair today and thought...hmmm. It looked comfy.
From the smaller mountains of New York. Maybe in six weeks you’ll be passing through. Watch out for Sasquatch.
One could only hope we would move that fast. I hope we make it before 6 months. Ha
That plant is a trillium 🌸
beautiful. Thanks.
30 lbs fully loaded is very good IMO. If it feels heavy, you can always start the first few days with lower mileage as the weight drops. Enjoy the adventure! 😊
I agree, not too bad, but I still want lighter.
3 days of rain coming
That's what we hear, lucky we are on a zero.
Just breathe. Maybe just stop and enjoy, soak up the peace and presence
Oh we are doing that about 10 hours a day. Ha! Lots of time to soak it up when walking 15 miles a day.
The cough/pee-in-the-pants 😂 blesssss for keeping it real.
Hi Sam! I hope you decide to join us for a bit. From Alt to this, I'm not in Kansas anymore. Always keeping it real!
You 2 will have such an amazing time! You can do this 💪
Thank you so much. Many miles to travel and we want to enjoy evey one.
With food & water included in the weight, 30-lbs backpack is not that bad.
agreed, but I still would like to get to 22-25. I am sure it will happen as it gets warmer.
@@WorldTowning - As you feel is best for you...just understand there is a direct correlation to lighter weight and increased discomfort...mainly in the overnight sleeping experience.
Heavy at 30????? Not bragging but mine averaged 95 and our lead guide was 125
Pounds? OMG! That is heavy.
PS. Those BV cannisters can be hard to open at first. Pro tip: Don't screw the lid tight until you retire it at night.
We learned that real quick, thankfully. Largo can open them so easy now, me, not so much.
I’m so excited… ya know… I got obsessed of Camino because of ya all!! I have a feeling I’m going to love this!!
OMG can you believe it. We are pinching ourselves at each moment.
I haven't been able to always keep tabs on you guys but I'm loving these vids and the podcast. I love the honesty and transparency as always.
The gear these days is amazing. I just got rid of our three person tent from the 90's and replaced it with a Big Agnes Copper Spur and it seems like a feather.
I love that Largo doesn't know who Vanna White is.
Must be strange for Will to go through this video not having been there.
Maybe I missed it, but I'd love to get a gear list.
Happy Trails - H
Hi Henry! Are you off on a big trip in Europe? Did I read that? So cool!
We love our Big Agnes.
No gear list yet, but there will be and I will do a full gear review in a vlog once we have worked out the kinks.
It is weird without Will. We miss him so much.
@@WorldTowning Seems like you're announcing gear as you go anyway. Yes, Anders and I leave for a bike trip across France in two weeks. St. Nazaire to Basel, Switzerland (or as far as we get). All the best to you guys. -H
I love that you are doing this hike with your son❤
Me too! Memory making on crack!
You don't need a bear canister on AT. Just hang your food.
We will try the bags at some point, but right now we are loving our cans more than we thought we would.
You put on the timer but didn't tell us how long it took.
Oops
Use the bidet, youll thank yourself trust me.
When it gets warmer. I don't want icicles on my butt.
Wow! you two are amazing!...I'm just catching up on this latest adventure this evening and I see that Largo just posted a 4th video so I can't wait to see it....yes, nothing worse than hiking or biking in the rain and getting cold, ugh....so glad you were able to get to a hotel (after hiking for 6 miles) and getting a nice hot shower etc.....and that pack, Jess! I could not carry such a heavy pack...! I've hike a lot of the 4000 footers in the white mountains but doing an overnight and hiking one day after another is a totally different experience, so glad that you are both doing this together...and that Will is following you....have a good night's sleep, try to stay warm and dry! Sandy in Maine
Thanks for your support. My pack started at 29 pounds and is down to 27 and hope to get it to 22 by summer.
@@WorldTowning are you two heading all the way up here to Maine?
@@smvmartin52 yep. See you there.
❤
I'm looking forward to following your journey! Thanks for the video. Try a lightweight whistle instead of the bear horn to save some ounces.
My mom gave me a cow bell that is hilarious. I will show it in a future vlog.
Yay! Lets goooooo! I am very jealous.
It's going to be amazing. I am so looking forward to sharing this journey.
Love this !!
Watching it while munching on some AMAZING stinky French cheese (Brie+), but also prepping for another 1,600K on the Camino ; mostly to home from Roncesvalles, but I will be in Santiago in late July.
Check out Bill Bennett's Camino film The Way, My Way !!
As to D&D I play DDO in the morning -- so when I set off in June, there'll be none of it for me 'til October or something.
Sleeping outdoors in Europe is a LOT easier, though it's best with an inflatable mattress, a military sleeping bag, and then either an isolated spot in the dark, or a village spot with a wall and a roof.
Your past experiences on the Camino are serving you very well, psychologically especially.
There's a tough transition between a shorter hike and a longer one, and you seem to be handling it well so far.
Thanks, will definitely check out the movie! And thanks for saying we are handling the longer hike well, some days it feels like we are not.
Yep it is a psychological game in the end, you know that.
Ultralight Pack with accessories , black diamond sticks , big agness tent ..whoa nothing but the best
I have heard the saying..."you pay now or you pay later with extra days off and doctors bill." Too heavy pack causes injury and this is a lifetime investment for us. Glad we did it.
@@WorldTowning dont get me wrong I have 3 Ultralight packs and the same tendtand sticks I always go good
@@gilstewart4069 so you get it! And we debated it because this ultra light stuff is pretty much double in cost, but grateful now.
You don't need the bear horn. Water and food is most of the weight. Good luck
30 pound pack, wow, I'm gonna call you Wonder Woman. Trail magic to start the day is great! Have you thought about ditching the bear canister and hanging your food bag? You guys are gonna do great on this hike and I'm looking forward to laughing with you.
And that is light compared to many. We thought we would switch to a bear bag, but right now throwing it up over a tree each night sounds not fun. Yes, lets laugh together.
I just recently found your channel. Loving it. You are living my dream. Hike on!!
Come make that dream happen. You can do it. Happy to have you with us on this journey.
New sub here. OMG😂 You 2 are awesome. I will be with you the entire hike👍🏻Be safe keep having fun.
Welcome aboard! And thank you! Happy to have you with us, buckle up!!
Looking forward to the next episode! You've got this guys!! :D
Thanks, every day they are coming!
The trail magic is so freaking heartwarming!!
It is MAGIC! Captain and Will and I will come do it next year for sure.
Love watching your adventures x
Thanks for being with us on this journey.
Just found your channel. So excited to follow along with your journey and also to check out your sailing videos! Good luck to you both!!
Thanks! We have tons of sailing vlogs too! From not knowing how to sail to crossing an ocean...nail biting stuff. Ha.
@@WorldTowning yes I dove in this evening and started watching and I’m loving it!
Everyone has a kitchen sink now. Hooray !!
Ha! We might need a new name for Will too many Kitchen Sinks on the AT.
Protein is pretty important. However you get it.
I am working on finding my favorite protein source.
Bear can on the A.T.? No.
Yep and at first we thought we would only use it until we got comfortable with the hang, but now we love it and after seeing lots of food bags getting dragged down and eaten we may stick with them.
If you keep your food bag in your tent and cover it with your dirty nasty socks, no critters will mess with it.
You are all amazing!🎉🎉🎉
So are you my friend! ❤
Excited for your hike. That plant is a trillium. It comes in many colors
I'm so excited, thank you, Jessica and Largo, you will do great🎉
Love my Kula cloths. So much
Me too! It is fabulous!
Wow! U all are a lot of fun.. 🎉
Awh, thanks. 6 months is a long time, we have to be having fun.
