I so agree with everything you were saying and it's a breath of fresh air. Thank you so much for talking about it when things are hard and your wonderful attitude about people saying it's not for them. I agree, they weren't sitting on the sidelines criticizing, they got out and tried something. That takes courage. Thank you both for your kindness, honesty and sense of humor.
Yep, trying it takes courage!!!!
It amazes me the effort people make to bully vloggers with their negative comments . I follow many thru hikers journeys and it’s maddening to see their comments day after day. They are taking time every day to be negative so sad. I like your attitude of no thank you.. My point- there will always be negative ppl, thank you for showing the good and the bad Your videos are awesome. Thank for sharing.
It is sad, but we just keep spreading the kindness and hopefully it will trickle off. Ha. 99.9 % of comments are so positive and supportive so we focus on them.
My wife and I have been building our funds for our 2025 hike. We will be 50 years old, it's our anniversary hike. We have been funding CDs from our bank. We are on our 2nd year. 1 year cd maturity is on the 1st of every month, and now we are building on the 15th of every month this year. Every two weeks will be $3000. We are debt free, and we are hoping to see a video from you in regards to the cost you experience on trail. We are cheering for you. Such positive energy. Following your great adventure.
Most are youtube enhancers. Some are just people having bad days. You cant have it all .....all the time.
Love you guys your approach with laughter is refreshing.
Awh, thanks! It is the only way to make it! Ha!
I’ll try not to be annoying and comment everyday but I might not be able to help myself!😂 I just LOVE how you are, funny, honest, open and brave. You make me aspire to be more like that. Thank you for sharing yourself and your family in the way that you do. How fun for you guys to have all of these videos to look back on too!!
Honestly, it does seem like a comedy. Particularly if you have subscribed to other through hikers.
I tried to not watch, because it seems like farce compared to people who really want to do it - but I can’t help myself.
And I am just waiting to see how far they will get- 2 weeks?
@thomasreedy4751 No Thank you!
@mccarthympa thanks so much for your kind words. We always say "if others can do it, so can we...and so can you!"
We hike because it's hard. At some point you will hear on the trail, "Embrace the Suck!" The Stoics practiced Voluntary Discomfort as a reminder to not get so soft. Your family has always exemplified a voluntary discomfort attitude, especially when Will was carrying the "Kitchen Sink" on the Camino. I wish I could be out there with you guys!
Ha, the Kitchen Sink! Yep, we are embracing the suck for sure on some days.
❤Awesome video. Sharing your stories and truth is so inspiring. You have had some amazing adventures. Stay safe and stay real👍🏻❤️
Thank you! Will do! Real is who we are not, not actors. Ha.
Try using credit card on bear keg and try to keep the threads super clean put card on side of keg at lock and twist it will make it easier on those cold mornings kudos on your travels and your message happy trails former a.t thru hiker having plans on another long trail
Good tip! I got it finally and Largo is a master! Awesome! Doing it again, magical.
Almost 16! Way to go!! Cake sounds great for a reward. You two are doing awesome!
Thank you!! 😊 We have had a lot of cake at this point!
You should do a quick vlog on how you're keeping everything charged. You're carrying a lot of electronics that need daily attention.
I hope they will! I’ve been wondering about that too. The short snippet of Largo charging in the tent was nowhere near enough.
Will definitely do a vlog on what we have and how we keep it charged.
More to come for sure on this topic.
We are on a adventure now, and we always have said to each other, "what's the worst that can happen, we go home?" Not a bad to say it's time to pivot and do something else. Who cares? Enjoying your videos, thanks for sharing.
So true! Exactly, we had a big pivot in 2023. So with you.
Watching Largo while you were telling the story about the guy who decided it wasn’t for him was the sweetest thing ever! What a kind hearted, generous guy you’re raising! ❤
He is a kind soul! Thanks for noticing.
I found your channel a few days ago and stuck around to keep watching and am still here. Loving your filming style as there are no pretences. I also love the bond you both have.
Awesome! Thank you! We are happy you joined us. More fun and learning to come.
Largo's subtle facial expressions are making me laugh (ie when you are discussing having to "poop")
We read him a book when he was little called "everyone poops," it is coming back to haunt him now.
Skipping dinner or breakfast on the trail is always a bad idea. Really, skipping any self care on the trail is a bad idea. You need the carbs and calories at the start of the day to keep moving and you need protein at the end of the day to build and repair muscle. Eating is also just a good mood booster. Eating, self care, and dry socks keep one from spiraling down. Yall are doing great! Take care of yourself
Very true! I know and I knew when I was doing it. I was just so beat. Thanks for your support and great advice.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💛💛💛💛💛💚💚💚💚💚💙💙💙💙💙
NOT ALL APPALACHIAN TRAIL VIDEOS ARE THE SAME. ONE UNNAMED CHANNEL THE GUY SHOWED US MORE OF HIM WALKING THAN THE TRAIL AND I FINALLY HAD TO QUIT FOLLOWING AND WATCHING HIS CHANNEL.
HERE WE HAVE FEMALE AND MALE... ONE YOUNG AND
THE OTHER OLDER AND I STILL WHOLEHEARTEDLY
ENJOY WATCHING ALL YOUR VIDEOS 🏕️🔥🏕️🔥🏕️🔥
Thanks for being here! Yep, all kinds of amazing vloggers on the AT doing their thing. Love it.
I think that people who call the AT not that hard are mostly veteran PCT thru-hikers.
I am *definitely* too old and too fat and too stupid !! But I do these crazy long hikes anyway ...
Ha, you are not too old!
Awe guys great, yes I am sure you are finding it hard, after sleeping on ground can't be that comfy, or warm, then walking all those miles. Hey Largo mic action, good stuff lad. Don't drop the mic
Thanks so much for your positive support!!!
Please never skip dinner….. I followed a hiker last year whom had to go off trail at 1,400 miles, in part, because he was losing too much weight. You need to keep your calories up, and make sure you are eating high quality protein and complex carbohydrates! I’m rooting for both of you! I want to see you make it to Maine!
Someday, I hope to also hike the AT! I need to wait until my girls are grown, and I was 39 when I had my youngest. So I will be up there in age, but I’m stubborn! If I really and truly set my mind to accomplish something, I usually accomplish it! Especially if it’s physical! I don’t want to be a little old lady that jokes around with a mother pushing a stroller that I wish someone could push me around in a stroller like that(I get so many people saying those kinds of things to me, and even saying that they bet that I can’t wait until she can push me….🤦🏼♀️ Hell, NO!😂😂😂)! I want to be one of those fit old ladies that amaze people at how strong and fit they are! I want to be active for my entire life! And, man, do I love to hike!🌲🌲🌲🪵🐿🦫🦝🦃🦌
I know, it is bad to skip the meals. I was just so tired. But, great advice. You can do it. I think the average age is 60ish. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
The GPS gives you a straight line distance but there is a formula that includes altitude gained/lost to give a close est. on how far you really walked and how much time it should take to get there realistically. I forgot it and it is probably buried deep in an old box of shtuff locked away from years past. I found it to be a helpful tool and someone on the trail may remember it.
Pleasantly cool in the AM??????? We would lay out our clothing outside the bag but right next to us and drag them in to warm up. `Your metabolic rate has increased somewhat and they warm up more quickly as time goes on. We did it in snow caves and at -20F and it was the axis of necessary evil as chores went but it passed by.
My pack got down to 45 lbs for -20 F at altitude including food and fuel for a week.
Those traveling on the High Sierra trail we met had High Speed equipment and was about 25 lbs to include tent, sleeping bag, food and fuel. The envy factor was high to say the least. They made it to Canada in one season.
Just hope yuuz guyz continue to have fun and adapt on your adventure ..................enjoy
wow, thanks for sharing, so useful! Have a great day.
I am planning to thru hike next year with my partner and teenage son, and i appreciate your motivation and will be spectating along the way. It gives me hope that I can do it too, as we are the same age😂
You sure can do it and to do it with your son is next level adventure and memory making.
I agree with you. Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done, wasn’t a good idea, etc. Keep doing you!
Thanks!!!! Exactly!!! Happy to have you here!
No thank you! I love that!
I know, right? I wish I had come up with it.
Welcome to the world of the online AT community! It’s honestly bizarrely negative and fearmongers/gate keeps much more than any other trail community I’ve come across. As always ignore the negative comments and posts (but maybe follow the whole yellow brick thing haha). I appreciate your honesty, best of luck! I met you at a trail magic right near the start btw
Hi, nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the magic! And your positive energy! Happy to have you along with us!
Enjoying this latest vlog! I have been following you for years and am so happy for the successes your family has achieved over the years! Avalon and Largo have benefitted from your decision to travel, homeschool and live on the road. They are beautiful, loving, caring, well-read, polymaths, multilingual young adults with the ability to make educated decisions for their lives! Great way to raise children. Stay safe on the trail and be careful!
Awh, thanks for following us for years! So appreciate it. You compliments are so kind. They are great kids, we are so lucky.
Oh Jessica! Thanks for sharing the reality!
You know I love backpacking and crazy adventures. I totally believe they don’t come without pain, learning curves and just hard days, emotional or physical. It will balance out as you hone your skills, yet every day you’ll have challenges and successes (little or big) that put all together will make looking back on this as an epic adventure. Happy Hiking! So wish I was with you! You and Largo are amazing and I love love love how you learn on the way. Keep it up!
Hi Sara! All great thoughts you are sharing! Thanks for your support. xoxo
Sometimes the neg-head comments always stand out more than the positive affirming ones do. So, I will share this, I think you are badass. You have an indomitable spirit, and apparently unlimited courage, and a great sense of humor. You kept sailing despite seasickness - that’s tough and amazing determination. You guys are currently on a journey that could be potentially dangerous but I suspect you have done enough research and you are going to be fine (good call on your Garmin inreach). Buen Camino! 👋🏻🙏🏻 P.S. now that you are thru hikers, poo talk is normal and absolutely required. 👍🏻
Awh, this is so sweet and made my day. THANK YOU!!! Big hugs!
You have Amazing positive energy. I imagine hikers you encounter want to be around you. Will it always be that way? Probably not. You will have good days and sucky days but knowing you, you will make the best of even the sucky days. Keep it real and hike your own hike. Enjoy the process. As a side note. Your videos are amazing. Great quality.
I am always a positive person, but I have hard days too and I acknowledge them and am honest. Thanks for the compliment.
Couldn't agree more. Never listen to the naysayers. I am not going to get to the end of my life and say , "If only I had......."Day 7 of the Vía de la Plata. I wanted to do it, so we did, despite the arthritis. No regrets, life presents you with enough disappointments. May your dreams always be bigger than your fears! (Not original I'm afraid, I translated it from a sugar packet I was given with my coffee)❤
Love everything you wrote. Thanks.
Thank you for important message and continue to enjoy the experience. That gentleman may get home and decide that section hiking is the better way to go. A huge day of hiking! Well done.
Exactly! Thanks for joining us. I hope we do hear from him again.
I’ve done hike trips on the AT and am always ready to call it, get a burger and hot shower after a few days. 😅 I watch the thru hikers and think “I can do that”! I’m not sure if I have it in me because I know it isn’t easy. I think it’s 80% mental. It’s on my bucket list. We only live once. Enjoy the adventure! At least you’re not dealing with ocean waves!🤣
Yes, do it! And I agree, 80% mental.
You cant touch the microphone....thats hilarious
This is all new tech for me. We have never used these external mics before. Usually, Will does the tech stuff. Trust me, Will is also sending me notes as he is looking at the footage telling me the same thing. I have corrected. but it will take a few vlogs to show.
I stayed at a hostel In Georgia where the cook called us all through hikers. Some of us will be through at Katahdin and others when we no longer want to hike…and we’re through. It is definitely a personal decision. I agree kudos to just getting out there.
Like that play on words. Thanks for sharing.
You are SO funny. Carry on!!!!! 😄😄
Thanks! Happy to have you here.
I think my version of "No thank you" for years was rolling my eyes and walking away.
If I listened to everyone telling me, I was being stupid, I would still be in so many toxic situations. I didn't, I'm not and now creating my own cheer squad. Woo-hoo you guys do your thing, as long as it's positive for you.
Just found your vlogs. 😊
When you get to the Hampton/Watauga Lake, TN area of the AT maybe we could do a meet up. Depends on what time you are in that area and my work schedule. 🦋❤️
Sounds great! Email me this.
@@WorldTowning ok
Drink more water. Hydration packets
We are drinking a ton, but more can't hurt.
I so believe you when you say it’s hard. But with anything in live the only thing you can do is take it one step at a time. You just have to make it to the next step. ❤
So true. The other day I was really struggling and I called Will and he said the same thing. Thanks.
Love watching you two hike the AT! Have to admit I miss seeing Will though! I started watching you when you were in the RV in Europe. Didn’t realize I’ve been watching you since the beginning. Going to go back today to see if you filmed Ecuador. Will watch it if you did.
Welcome back! WE MISS WILL TOO!!!! Thanks for being here for so long! We started filming in Ecuador, but were not like we are now. ...still fun to watch them though.
"In every walk with nature one receives far more than ‘one’ seeks." -John Muir. Thanks for your interesting insight. Wishing you safe passage and good fortune. Happy Trails.
Well said! Love John!
You have learned, grosshopper! In my life, when someone asks how i am, my reply is: " I'm not sure" or "i will tell you at 5PM" and a few othe lines which always throws peopleoff because they are not expecting that. :)
Ha, I suspect that will be the same with my "no thank you"
Been following you and your family from the beginning, don't usually comment but I am thrilled to see you hiking with Largo,I watched your kids literally grow up into fine young people thanks to you and Will, stay safe❤
Awesome! Thank you so much for being here all these years later. And thanks for your compliments.
What a precious son you have. I’m looking forward to what he will do w/ his future. He’s had such a great background & structured family environment.
Thanks. He is a good one. Love him.
I’m enjoying your hike more and more each day! Greetings from Illinois (Starved Rock State Park area).
Hello there! Awh, thanks. Glad you are finding value in it.
Getting out of a warm sleeping bag on a cold morning is the worst! Even though you know it will be fine as soon as you get going, it’s still really hard to make yourself do it. What does this mean? It means everyday you are doing something hard and succeeding 🎉
Exactly! Thank you for your support and positive attitude.
I appreciate your honesty. So much better to be truthful. It seems things worth doing are often hard. 15 miles! You guys are doing so good.
Yep, honesty for the win. I have nothing to hide and we all learn this way.
OMG! Sooo glad I came across your channel today! Love your vlogging… keep on keeping it real!❤️
Awh, thanks. Welcome! We have a lot of fun here and a really cool community.
I absolutely love your vlogs! You are so entertaining and the way of keeping it totally real is the best!! Thoroughly enjoying both of you! ❤
Thank you so much!! Happy to have you here! More fun to come and of course, reality!!!
Try doggie bags for camouflage toilet paper or other unsightly items.
good idea. Thanks
so much great advice in one video! thanks so much for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! Happy you are here.
Have you thought about hiking the Kumano Kodo in Japan? Currently watching @AdveruteArchives and it seems gueling but beautiful.
Would love to...but my big bucket list in Japan is 88 Temples!
That would be amazing. You guys rock btw. Very inspiring.
When i worked in the copper mines of Northern Ontario, Canada (age 19), the working temperature in the shafts was a constant 40 degrees F.....
wow
Love following you guys! ❤
Thanks, happy you are enjoying the vlogs.
❤ you guys!
Thank you for joining us!
If you've got a really good sleeping bag, try wearing less clothing, not more. A good bag needs your body heat to warm up.
Ok, I am going to try it tomorrow night. I am thinking my merino wool sleep clothing is making me uncomfortable actually,
I wish you had an email I could write to. Do you? I’m on no social media except TH-cam is the only thing I use. Following AT hikers as I am planning to do it next year.
jessica@worldtowning.com.
I have to say that Largo look so much like his Dad😊
He sure does!
I'm sorry but because you are so insistent of sharing your toiletry problems multiple times in your vlogs I wont be watching this series anymore
Bummer, because I appreciate the openness and honesty. It's mentally preparing me for my backpacking trip this summer. ❤
@@Danielle-rb2jk There's informative and there's TMI.. multiple times in each video we have to hear more and more including I have to poop or I peed on myself.. TMI
Ok, Bye 👋 😊
It’s a huge issue to deal with-especially for a new hiker. The gross becomes normal eventually. I don’t mind hearing a hiker be real about it.
