  • Successful doctor and patient discussions about hospice care begin with a shared understanding of the current situation and shared goals for the future. Then hospice referral then becomes a way to achieve those goals. Watch this video to see Charles von Gunten, MD, PhD discuss hospice care with a patient. The Problem here is that this lady is an actor with a script and most patients wont talk that much about there health or hospice, what happens when The Doctors questions are not answered in a scripted way? Most patients on Hospice for End Stage heart failure dont have the wind to talk that much, usually 2-3 word sentences.

My mom went into hospice and there was never this kind of discussion. They pushed it on me
Now my husband has stage 4 cancer that was a surprise and they are pushing for discharge every day. They are talking to me over the phone to go into pallative and then hospice. No consultation. They didn't even have the decency to tell me in person he has brain, kidney, pancreatic and liver cancer. They did it over the phone. Also the doctor at the hospital told him without me that he has cancer. The brain cancer has caused dementia so I don't think he ever understood what she said.

Well because it's not about you it's about stopping the suffering of the patient. And ok we live in a time of covid so it's not wrong to give you news over the phone at an appropiate time. If you're husband has all this of course he is suffering and that's why they're trying to force you tu understand to not make things worse for him than they're.

I'm not being an asshole at all when I ask this, but is this true what is happening in the video right now? Or is this acted? I can't see so I was just wondering. Sorry if I offended anybody

It’s overrated. Not much different than regular home health. Only quality of life aspect that I see is no worrying about expensive, aggressive treatments which may or may not slow down your disease.

Hospice focuses more on pain management and maintaining comfort and consists of many different teams such as the chaplains, social workers, and bereavement along side the clinic side with aides and nurses. It's much more than home health care even though that is an aspect of hospice care.
