  • The windmills in Nashtifan, Iran are believed as the earliest windmill design in the world, and have been used for centuries. Those windmills are characterized by the vertical wooden blades and the horizontal rotation. In addition, the place is also famous for the wind that blows 120 days in a year across the region, and supplies the required energy to run the windmills.

    These windmills are 1000 years old. And been recognized as national heritage by Iranian authorities recently.

    What an amazing building! It should get the status of a world heritage to get resources for keeping it alive. The wind must be really strong there.

    It must have taken a lot of effort to get the timbers there and build the compacted earth structure. It deserves a protected status.

    We need to keep the old ways alive for future generations. New technology is wonderful but looking back and so much history has been lost many things done then we no longer know how it was done or even works. At least if something did happen they would have a means of still processing grain. The cost is mainly labor and maintenance. In a world that now glorifies high tech I admire low tech more

      what do u expect them to do? stay in the same place and do the same things that their ancestors did just for the sake of tradition? I'm all for preserving ancient cultures and artefacts, but that's the job of museums and governments.

    Gorgeous and ingenious. If we can all ignore the lunatic politicians destroying our nations, we the people around the world can get along just fine. It bums me out that there is a high likelihood I will never visit these windmills, though I very much would like to.

    I like the operation very much. Dont get me wrong however when i say that i dont understand how the blades capture power since theres no difference in shape on either side of the vertical axis. If the wind pushes a blade on the left for example, it also pushes the same against the right side thus cancelling the capture of power. Look at any other vawt to see theres an assymetry of some sort allowing wind to exert more pressure on one side than the other, usually in the shape of the blades.

    • @majercsiksass
      @majercsiksass 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not an expert, but I think that the walls around are "channeling" the wind on the rotor.

    • @WarblesOnALot
      @WarblesOnALot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      G'day,
      It's apparently as Ivan says, in that each VAWT is indeed symetrical, but the Wind only comes from one direction, and on that side one end of an L-Shaped Wall shields the "Advancing" half of the Rotor from the Wind, while effectively increasing the high-pressure Area upwind of that Shield...., feeding Wind tothe Rotor's other half, and meanwhile the "Tail of the L" serves as a "Race" to smooth the flow of Air going through the Gap, feeding the adjacent Rotor.
      Allowing for the Materials - riven Timber, sawn Timber, Stone, Wattle & Daub ; it's a very highly efficient Battery of Vertical Axis Windmills.
      I LIKE it !
      Have a good one.
      ;-p
