- Follow along as I show off one of my very favorite machines! This beautiful Kenmore from 1954. It is a straight stitch monster that I have made several projects with. I love it and I am sure you will too. Enjoy!

I have this machines that was my grandma's. I have used this my whole life. He is so right, they are indestructible. LOVE IT

I just found your Channel today... how nice of you to show the different vintage machines! I have been sewing since the late 1960s. I also love Kenmore machines! The one I have now is Kenmore model #1249 and was purchased in 1982 as a wedding gift. It has sewn anything and everything from lingerie to reupholstering couches to curtains and draperies to bridal gowns Etc. Over the past 40 years with almost no repairs needed! I can't say enough about Kenmore machines...❤

I started collecting about a year ago also and have about 20 so far. The hard part is finding space for all of them!

My 117.959 is one of my favorites :) Kenmore was one of Sear's house brands for sewing machines. White was their primary supplier until the 50s, when Sears started having Japanese manufacturers build some (and eventually all) of their Kenmore's, primarily because White did not make a zig-zag machine.

For me, the sweet spot for collecting is that Mid-Century Modern era, particularly with Japanese machines. They were trying SO hard to gain market share, and the styling absolutely was part of that.
That all said, the Singers and Whites have their own appeal. I keep thinking I should buy one of these and repaint it in cream and bright red.

I did! A Necchi U110 331 HEAVY, I think it's like late 1940's maybe
It's in a pretty stand. Is frozen but I think I can fix it, not as good as you thought lol!
And a White brand child's machine. I haven't checked it out yet but hope it works.

@@NeverTooMany2023 if you do come up with a pattern, especially for both the sling and accessory bag, I'm thinking you could sell a lot. eBay or wherever. Especially to those who have round top wood cases that really should NOT be picked up by the handles (fragile). Just sayin'. Make a buck wherever we can these days! You have a great idea.
@@robinr6399 Thanks again for the kind words. You make a good point. It's funny, when we bought our first bent wood top machine we were told the same thing, "don't use the handle". I hadn't thought of that but you are right a sling would be a good solution for those. You are the one with the great ideas!

The sound is muted because it's in the background as he talks. I have the same machine as well as many Singers. The Singers are actually just as quiet when properly maintained. My Singer 201 is the quietest machine old or new that I've heard, just a soft whirring sound
@@ryndl I have Kenmores that sounds like this. I also love how the presser foot lever goes up just a little bit more for bulky fabrics. I also love the engineering and ease of maintenance. I’m not hating on your 201 though as that’s a classic.
Kenmore models were mainly from Japan. Yes, Jap made better chromed parts than those European makers, Plaff and Bernina do rust easily.

I have one similar and YES it was covered with nicotine I thought it was a green machine but it is blue and yellow Godzilla. Franklin made the same design also with the Rotary with the friction pulley at the back to move the driveshaft. Love the sounds of these and many men love them also .. a little growl to it great for leather also. Love your sling idea and you were thinking when you made it larger to protect the table. Great idea. Enjoy the sewing machine bug they are all amazing and I too have too many but I can hardly wait to get them home and try them out and yes you do get your favourites since they are each so unique with the engineering and design. How do you get a manual for this machine?? And replacement parts?
I would look on Ebay for parts and manuals for vintage machines. Also, This machine uses the same parts as several others. If you can find a similar Kenmore on the same era you could buy it and have a parts machine.
A lot of the Kenmores were made by White. Kenmore (Sears) never made their own machines, neither did Wards or Penneys. My favorite Kenmore (White) was my 1938 117-600 burgundy color.
That is an awesome one. Burgundy machines and green machines are my favorite. Kenmore has some machines that I really like as well. I really want to pick up a 1040 3/4 size unit. They are super cute and well built :) Thanks for watching!
Love your video! I just picked one up, but the presser foot is frozen, how do you get it to go up?
Thanks for the question. Congrats on your new machine :) Not sure about the presser foot. It is either bound up (as in bent), or it just needs lubricated and slowly worked up and down until it is freed up. Without seeing it, I am only guessing
The lever to lift up the foot is just hanging. Is it possible I could send you a picture of what I’m dealing with?
