  • Start learning about Edge Grip technique, where the ideas originated, and how David Roth took those ideas to the next level. This is a good overview, but it is simply an introduction to the technique. I've included a cool clip of a young David Roth in performance and I give you a good exercise to start working on the modern version of edge grip technique.
    Check out the full clip of David Roth performing on the Robert Klein show

    3:35 this is probably the first coin trick i can remember learning as a kid. It was in one of the mark wilson vhs tapes and you used two of the "larger" coins so that after the transformation you would produce two coins. It was really great for someone who was just starting out and couldn't palm yet and always really impressed anyone I've ever shown it to.

    I was trying the exercise you suggested , and after the third coin was in downs and the hand was resting on the table, I just decided to Roth snatch them from the air with the empty hand and Hing Chen slapped them onto the table where the other hand was, so it had to jump out of the way. My wife was sitting across the living room with my daughter. They are the typical magician’s family, and are almost sick of me fiddling. Well this time there were audible gasps from both when I grabbed invisible coins from the air with an empty hand and slapped them onto the table. I didn’t know they were watching.

    I am so happy that I found this channel. I dabbled in magic many years ago but haven’t done so in ages. Was cleaning out the old hobby box and come across my old silver coins. They haven’t left my pockets or hands since. Thanks man for inspiring me back to a very cool old hobby of mine!

    This is great! I remember spending ages trying to master the curl palm and then transferring the coin into the edge grip. I was honored to talk to Curtis Kam in person and he gave me some tips. What you are doing now is outstanding! Coin techniques and the theories behind them are so psychologically challenging. Thanks, man. It's really motivating and inspiring.

    Great video once again. I would name Kainoah Harbottle in Coins on Edge as the person who popularized the new wave of direct vanishes around the edge, with his pendulum coins across routine. A must have imho

      Ironically today’s my birthday so this is pretty serendipitous haha..though now I know that I’ve been mixing up Down’s Palm & edge grip but either way I love this technique! Really want to get that book too

    Great work ! I remember roth from the magic castle and yes he was about 30-35 years old. About 20 years ago I spent hours trying to perfect his his moves. Portable hole hanging coins purse and glass ect. I want to thank you for mentioning his name, he was a phenomenal.

    The David Roth vid is GREAT! Robert Klein goofed though, when he asked if there is a special division of COMEDY when he meant MAGIC.

    I think separating the coins from a fanned display and showing that there is no 3rd coin hiding behind another coin is also convincing.

    Need I say how excellent this video is? As always your production and instruction are top notch. I generally use Down's palm, but after I purchased Sly Palm, I watched your performance in that and had my brain fried when you held the coins and the "window" you speak of hit the screen! So fooling.

    • @RickHolcombe
      @RickHolcombe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good example! Someone reached out to me after that project and asked how am I doing that? You never teach that etc. And I had to explain that is what actual Edge Grip does!

    This is awesome material, thanks Rick! Is it worth getting the Roth book if we already have the DVDs, is the material different enough to own both? Thanks

    • @RickHolcombe
      @RickHolcombe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! There are things in the book that are not on the videos and vice versa. And at $60? It's a no-brainer if you are able to afford it.

    How do you cover the sound of the coins hitting one another?

    • @RickHolcombe
      @RickHolcombe  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's where old, smooth coins help a lot. Other than that, just go slowly and don't rush stacking them.
