    I literally just thought of doing this today and I see you've thought of it two years ago! The computing and networking tools available these days allow you to set up a system that could coordinate custom designed advanced-level collaborative workflows for a few bucks a month.

      It took a bit but it does work! Especially when you replicate source footage. another option is hosting an open on server internally and routing it through your firewall…

    • @johnsfilmsllc
      @johnsfilmsllc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, what I would do...sign up for google drive or one drive or something ...dropbox...your gold source gets uploaded to the drop. Every editor maps to the drive and has automated replication turned on. This means when the gold source gets uploaded, every editor has a copy replicated down to their computer. To note, helps a lot if you keep the same folder structure on each of the machines. c:\Videos\ProjectName\A Cam\ works....this way the project files refer to the source footage on everyone's computer. make sense?

I’ve just tried to connect to the online database with a new Mac and it won’t let me connect says “Connection Error: Failed to connect to the database server as the connection was refused. Please ensure that the database reverts is configured to allow connections from this device.” I’m lost as to why as the IP address is the same as my pc and that connects. Any ideas where it’s gone wrong?

    Awesome. I've noticed Blackmagic has before not recommended to use collaboration over the internet. Only over LAN. Do you have any experience with delay or workflow issues doing this over AWS in stead of over LAN?

  • @LillySchwartz
    @LillySchwartz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is truly a video not to be found anywhere else, very interesting! I cringed a little when you turned off the firewall entirely instead of doing port forwarding, but since Amazon has a separate firewall in front of it it‘s probably fine 😅 I’m sure it’s all sandboxed anyway and the VMs don’t see anyone in their local network?
    By the way, remember that I asked you about the RX580 in a Hackintosh with Resolve free a while back? I have built the machine now and tested it: i9900K + RX580 + Resolve free can handle Braw 4K and scrubs smoothly, doesn‘t drop frames during playback after grading and stabilising. Same goes for Sony A7c footage, doesn’t drop frames, scrubbing is a tad less smooth, but it’s hardly even noticeable. Export times are at around 60-75% real time. It seems like the RX 580 is the perfect budget card for the BMPCC4K which I‘ll be getting once my wallet recovers 😂 Very happy with my new machine now, it runs a lot cooler than a real Mac, still has 32bit support, can handle 4K editing just fine and cost me a lot less than a comparable spec iMac.
    Thanks again for your pointers regarding the RX 580 + free vs Studio question, they helped reassure me. I was a bit worried that I might regret not going for the RX 5700. The RX580 is definitely enough for now though! Your videos are such a good resource to have, thank you for making them!

      @@johnsfilmsllc comparing Mac and PC performance is really difficult, because a lot of the Mac designs have bad thermals, but the OS is slightly more efficient for certain things too! I get 100 points more in Cinebench in Mac OS than in Windows on the same machine, but mine is a Hackintosh, so it‘s not thermal throttling anything! Maybe it‘s something worth exploring for you if you still have an AMD card lying around? Ryzentosh is definitely a thing and it‘s easier to pull off than I expected! Not quite as smooth and fully compatible as Intel, but I‘m sure Resolve would run! I don‘t think anyone has done a video with proper benchmark comparisons of Mac OS vs Windows vs Linux for Resolve on the exact same machine yet, would be super interesting to see how it would compare with your regular benchmarks.

    Hi John. Have you actually gotten collaboration working across the net or just hosting a database? We would love to use this but have the true power of resolve collaboration working. Another question is that when using this method it is only like 50% of the time it works. Some computers connect and some don't. then we flip it or set up another instance and then computers that didn't connect before now connect and vice versa. Is this something you have come across?

    Thanks for the great setup info! You saved me a lot of work!
    This setup works for me when I open the project from one computer. However, if I try to open the project from two computers, using collaboration mode, I get an error: "Please ensure that the machines are not connected using a VPN and that DaVinci Resolve is not being blocked by another system firewall." The problem is not specific to a particular computer - both computers can, separately - open the project. However, whichever computer tries to open the project when it's already open on the other computer gets the error.
    The thought the problem might be because both computers are on the same home network so perhaps Postgres running on the AWS server isn't able to distinguish between the two of them, since they both have the same egress IP address. I tried to test this by connecting one of the computers to a VPN, so that both computers would have a separate egress addresses but it didn't help. If I use a DB on my local network, everything works fine.
    Any ideas?

      I haven't used it, though I have looked at it. I've talked about it with Billy Rybka (another resolve youtuber) quite a bit. He uses it with his production company to communicate with his editors and really likes it.

    Hello, how can I do this with a group of Mac users and one PC user now. Thanks

    • @johnsfilmsllc

      The challenge you are going to run into (and probably did) is the location of the media files that are stored on the machine. You will argue back and forth, saving the settings over and over...Sadly I don't have a fix...

    hey! we would need some help with this setup, wanting to basically be able to "rough cut" in studio A, and, "edit" in studio B, then, color correct in studio C all arround the planet, working on ONE project.
    how can we get in touch?
    thx!

    Do you want to get into a discord call and plan out, how we will do the text/text+ video ?

    • @johnsfilmsllc
      @johnsfilmsllc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got my discord 2FA messed up and can’t get into it at this point. I did some searching and Text/Text+ isn’t going to be a good topic for a video as it doesn’t draw much search volume ;(

    Hi ! A big thank's for this tuto.
    I have a probleme when I try to modify the timeline. I have this message : "The project could not be loaded in collaboration mode as Resolve was unable to establish a connection to communicate with other users. Please ensure that the machines are not connected using a VPN and that Davinci Resolve is not being blocked by the system firewall."
    I don't know what to do :/

    • @johnsfilmsllc
      @johnsfilmsllc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats new - it used to work without direct connections to other users for basic project collab. The communication/chat features required a direct connection which was beyond the scope of the video. If you have the ability to setup a vpn and connect to it try that. i just set up another youtuber with his own film company and it works like a champ. Look at open vpn server (and some consumer routers even run it)

      @@johnsfilmsllc Thank you for your answer. I'm not sure if I can do this because I'm really not good at networking. I will look for tutorials.

    Of course it's working but TOTALY UNSECURED !
    If it can be used for testing purposes, I highly recommend to never use this configuration in a production environment.
    Please consider to change PostgreSQL user name and password, avoid using a x.x.x.x/0 listening address and never open port 5432/tcp for ANY public address from Internet using the 0.0.0.0/0 source IP.
    You can avoid this critical vulnerability by using a VPN between your computer and the server. Then in the firewall rules you only allows port 5432/tcp throw the VPN tunnel.

      100% Agree. Resolve by default uses the same User/Pass for all hosted resolve configs as well...

      @@johnsfilmsllc @Tanner Fugal if the internet goes down you could access the instance using your phones mobile data and export the project required? Then reimport the new work back into the original project when the internet returns. One could also run an automatic SQL backup program on the instance to constantly backup to an FTP? Does that tick enough boxes to make it safe?
