  • Is the Rotofab really a hot air intake or can it live up to its hype? The outcome may be surprising, so stick around and watch the video.
In this video we are comparing racetrack performance of an aftermarket Rotofab cold air intake to the Camaro ZL1 1LE factory airbox with a performance filter by Green Filter.
We’re using the Chevrolet Performance Data Recorder data and extracting:
    Outside Air Temp
    Inlet Air Temp
    Calculated Horsepower
    Boost
    RPM

100% I absolutely agree with this…. Rotofab is popular and great if you drive without a hood or want to cut a hole in your hood. I sold mine and grabbed the CAI Carbon Elite with a velossa tech big mouth ram air to feed extra cold air I don’t have all the data recorder stats but its been tested to reduces inlet air temps by 13 to 17 degrees. For myself, I loss on average 5km/h in the quarter mile with the Rotofab when engine temps where up compared to stock , with CAI and velossa tech i gained on average 5 to 6 km/h over stock. Not scientific testing not exact same conditions but that’s over numerous runs over numerous days. That’s all i need to know. I did get my CAI Carbon Elite used for $600 Canadian off a guy who was selling his ZL1 …being in Canada i couldn’t rationalize paying full price for the intake because the extra costs we incur when bringing that item in it would have cost me close to $2000 when all is said and done which is too much. You can’t accurately Dyno to test the impact of these types of mods. Sure you get more supercharger whine sound with the open rotofab design but that’s almost the equivalent of these new cars that have fake exhaust sounds piped in through the speakers makes you sound like you are going faster but its all smoke and mirrors. I say most cost effective is keep stock box drop in a performance filter and add the velossa tech big mouth save your money over buying a rotofab unless you want the whine sound then enjoy but there is no performance benefit because of the extreme amount of heat generated by the LT4 the open design fails as it does not completely seal and it sucks in too much hot air from under the hood. If you want a cool looking open design grab the corsa carbon fiber one at least it looks cooler than the rotofab at a similar price point.

I had a suspicion that this was the case that RotoFab would suck in hot air vs stock air box. I am torn though because I really wanted the Fab filter for the extra SC whine but I'm not willing to sacrifice horsepower. Someone else makes an aftermarket filter which I forgot at the moment but it's the same concept as Rotofab.

I always recommend dry air filters for all heated sensor element MAF equipped vehicles to avoid the whole oil contamination issue. That being said, when I first picked up the car I immediately swapped out the stock paper filter to an AEM Dry-Flo filter. Zero issues and they have been proven to outflow other cotton/ gauze style filters like K&N and AFe. Definitely plenty of airflow for my 707 WHP/ 770 WTQ ZL1!
Bonus extra: I mentioned this in a sub comment, but make sure to remove the snow blocker next to the driver's side headlight right before the snorkel to the airbox starts to further remove restriction and maximize the airflow immediately coming in through the grille area.

@@RacingforALS oh yeah I know, I've seen it before. We used to use parts wash if we didn't have that on hand. It works good, you just gotta make sure the sensor is not hot still.
To me, it's just an extra step that shouldn't be necessary under otherwise normal circumstances. Where I live there is a lack of dust and sand so I don't have the additional need for an oiled media filter which does offer additional protection against external contaminants.

SS1LE owner here and an engineer. I always dismissed the open hood cai dyno comparisons which neglects the heat soak during operation with hood down. I know K&N, AFE and Green drop in filters are pretty good with the downside of filtration efficiency in the long run and maf sensor problems due to too much oil application during service intervals.

I have an SS 1LE and I originally bought the K&N cold air intake which I've had on it for about two and a half years and just recently I figured all this out because it does not seal to the air Inlet the way the factory one does so I'm going with the rotofab that seals to the inlet, the hood, and sealed box!! My car is cammed and not been running the way it should due to the CAI!! I figured out that my factory air intake is better than any aftermarket non-sealed cai. More so than the difference in horsepower is the throttle response has developed quite a bit of lag with the K&N non-sealed cold air intake as compared to the factory sealed one.

I suspect that most of the air is coming from the hood seal and the interface with the fender splash shield. I'm not sure there is going to be a magic solution. Obviously the Roto-Fab is doing a reasonable job, but some percentage of the air from the engine bay is getting in.

Great analysis and the point about the hood being closed. I always wonder about that and makes sense. But, a Mamo ported OE 87mm throttle body could do a good job of gaining some high end power due to less restriction while using the OE intake box. Plz review that.

    • @RacingforALS
      @RacingforALS  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I will if I get an opportunity. On my old car, I ran a ported throttle body (just the upstream side of the throttle plate). It felt great after first installing it or after an ECU reset, but over time, the car adjusted the part throttle position to correct the anticipated airflow. A tune could resolve the issue, but ported throttle bodies do not make long-term gains on stock-tune cars.

Stop and go traffic, red lights, and low rpm driving that doesn't efficiently move air through the engine compartment, or coolant through the radiator. Not quite apples to apples, but I know my old muscle cars all run much cooler at highway speeds than stop and go traffic. This is with a mix of radiator types and electric of belt driven fans. I guess I just cant see the downside of a closed system drawing air from outside of the engine bay.

Did you utilize the factory air box with zero modification to remove relative airflow restrictions…?

The stock airbox was not modified, but the paper filter was replaced with a oiled cotton Green Filter.

Remove the snow blocker plate next to the driver's headlight and you'll further remove restriction from the fresh air snorkel.

Anyone modding these car knows they have to managing IATs on these infernos, if you are staying stock there is no reason to have an intake only. Plenty of testing has been done and proves the gains of 5” inlets/103-120mm throttle bodies in the 800+ who range. While Mr. Banks knows his stuff and oxygen density is the most important factor of an intake, it is disingenuous in his snippet of presentation showing a stock LS3 with a hot air intake slamming the industry for making such a product. There is no free lunch, back your learnings with data/logs. If my Interchilled 2650 car went back to a factory TB and airbox I’d lose a tremendous amount of air volume and increase plenum vacuum causing additional pumping losses.

Good points, but ultimately you need outside air on a road course when coolant temperatures are 230+. It doesn’t have to be the stock airbox, but the Rotofab isn’t adequately sealed from the engine compartment. Thanks for sharing your well written explanation.

Rorltofab is garbage. People buy them because the name Is trendy... Funny how thousands of used Rotofab units are for sale online. 😂😂😂😂

Cold air intakes are all garbage, for Cummins pick ups they are garbage, almost all of them with the open filter under the hood are just taking your money.

What do you think of the elite carbon series? It is also fully closed of CAI plus do you think the carbon would keep it cooler for longer runs vs the stock?

I don't have any experience with it, but believe it is fairly expensive. We'd be happy to test one.

Interested in this too. Zander13 had one on his channel on a part 1 series and never did a follow up. It was removed for a Corsa. Wonder if he didnt like it or had issues. Would have liked to see some data on that. Looked interesting and if the cost justified performance, it would have been interesting to hear more.

My experience with the Cold Air Inductions Carbon Elite intake wasn't very positive.
One corner of the intake box sat up too high and rubbed on the inside of the hood when it closed. During attempts to get the box to sit correctly, several pegs on the underside of the box that fit in the grommets on the engine bay frame broke off. The pegs are only held in place by the carbon fiber coating surrounding the box.
The first time this happened I sent the box back to Cold Air Inductions and they glued the pegs back on. Trying to seat the repaired box the pegs broke off again. The third time I tried to glue the pegs back on only to have them break off again.
Frustrated, I contacted Summit Racing and they allowed me to return the intake for a full refund.
For an intake costing that much, the pegs should be secured to the box with screws or something stronger than the carbon fiber coating.

I have CAI and i love it and have it paired with a velossa tech big mouth ram air and have noticed gains see my response to the Racing for ALS original message. I got my Carbon Elite used on line from a guy who was selling his ZL1 so i got it for $600 Canadian with local pick up so i couldn’t pass it up. It also look incredible under the hood. As for benefits over stock similar closed design and carbon provides better heat insulation over the stock plastic but as i mention above I recommend best cost effective mod is keep stock box upgrade the filter and add the velossa tech big mouth i believe the biggest difference is from that ram air is that it takes half of your upper front grill and feeding that cooler forced air directly into the air box. If you do car shows as well and want some under hood eye candy the CAI Carbon elite can’t be beat for pure aesthetics but its expensive. I never would have paid full price for it, being in Canada with shipping , exchange rate, handling feeds and duties/taxes it would have cost me close to $2000 which is too much for me rationalize.
