  • Toby recently looked at the Karoo Street Tyres from Metzeler, and with Mark off touring in Norway, it seemed the perfect opportunity for him to take them on tour to see how they stood up to touring.
    What were they like?

Thanks for the kind words regarding our little off road excursion. We were not harmed in the making of this video... I'm blessed with a wife that see's the funny side of everything.

I have about 8000 kilometres on mine, and I absolutely love them. Yes they are noisy (but that can be expected with that thread pattern, so I knew that in advance), but the grip is superb (both on and off-road). I use grip puppies so any potential vibrations on the handlebars get mitigated completely.
I'd call these the perfect GS tyre, if you plan to use your GS like a GS and not like an RT. I avoid motorways as much as possible, and do regular light to medium off-roading. They are very confidence inspiring, whether you're riding on tarmac through a torrential downpour or through loose sand.

_DCS_ Raven I liked them really but I think they are more off road bias than the makers are stating.

Cheers, as I’m on the tar I’ll stick with the Metzler Road Tec 01s. With that said, I seem to be a little hard on the rear tyre, but to be expected I suppose, predominantly riding twisties, two up most of the time. Thanks Mark.🏍👍

I've a set of these on my R1200GSA and will feel fortunate if I get 6,500km out of these. While I love that that they have a fairly ideal silicone / carbon black / rubber matrix that makes them wonderfully planted at speed in dry or wet curves, I am wishing for greater longevity as well! I do tend to get on it a bit much and that might be contributing to the tire life expectancy as well... Still, I do feel these to be the safest, stickiest ADV tires I've yet tested and have grown mostly comfortable with the noise. I also have spent a decent amount of off-road time with these - terrible in anything remotely muddy, not bad in loose gravel and on hard pack. I do also tend to run them at their cold maximum pressure so get a fair amount of deflection when I hit rocks and edges at speed.... Things to consider... I'm ordering another rear shortly as I still have 70% tread left on front... Thanks for the presentation!

I’ve got the Karoo Street, and your right about the noise, but only on motorways, but I do find wearing ear plugs, the yellow spongy ones, cut out the noise altogether. As for the roads, I don’t think Norway has the masses of traffic we have, and in the winter the roads are white with compressed snow/ice, not like the slush we have. And I don’t think docking a few managers a couple of million quid will sort it 🤔 Hope you had or having a great time out there guys. Keep up the good work, it’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. (Lucky buggers lol)

I agree on the UK road front! Infrastructure should come first really & would possibly lower accident rates by a fair margin.

Mark / Toby - That is great feedback. I am returning (retiring) to Blighty tomorrow from Cairo to my long suffering family, after 24 years working overseas. I have an Africa Twin that I have never seen yet, with these boots, and they only have 1100 miles (as does the bike) - so I won't change them immediately. I am seriously thinking Continental's. Bit limited because of the 21" front wheel, so no chance of MIchelin. I will be 99% road. Thoughts boys, as this one is a cuppla years old now?. Cheers

Interesting, I have got 7500 miles out of mine so far, and will look to get a new set before our trip to the Alps in July. Rear has squared off a bit but front looks really good still. Agree about the noise though.

Hello, love the video. I am considering buying the tyre for my KTM 790. I would like to know which are less noisy tyres in this 70/30 segment?

Great video as always, putting aside the tyres that your riding on there and given the new bike usually comes with panicky 😱 3's what tyres would you use and feel more confident on for mostly tarmac use ? Regards Martyn

Martyn Leyfield hiya, I will be replacing my Panicky 3's with either Metzler Roadtec01's or Tourance Next.

    Hi
Enjoyed ur video! You mentioned you travelled 20-25000 km per year, just wondering how many kms u r getting out of the front and rears of the Karoo Streets ?
I have a Triumph Explorer and carry around 55 kg with panniers inc. I use Motoz Gps Tractionators , cost a bit more and I done 10500kms 3 mm on rear and 17500 km 2 mm on front . I am 95% on bitumen and interested in ur thoughts of the longevity of the Karoo Street as it seems we do similar riding .
    Cheers
    Darren.

Funny you say about the noise. I have the Streets fitted at the moment and have always previously used Karoo 3's. The problem is that the noise produced by the Streets is a higher pitch than the 3's and so I find it more intrusive (even with earplugs). Will likely go back to fitting Karoo 3's when these are worn out.

I have kroo 3 on front and karoo street on the back. I was thinking to change the 3’ with street because of the noise problem. Formerly I had pirelli scorpion rally streets and had the same noise problem with them. You have changed my mind. I thought streets have less noise than trees.

I’m loving my Roadtec 01 I bought on your positive review. They handle torrential Florida downpours with ease . Only thing I have to watch for on them like any tire is sand gravel or slick stuff . Thanks for that 01 review and this review tho I don’t think I’ll b in the market for anything like them for asphalt only riding. My dream is to do a Norway ride . Can I rent a bike or must one fly there bike over ? Thank you again for all the enjoyable reviews on the various products devices bikes & the new back to basics series I’m really enjoying & getting a lot out of.

Mark Lloyd hi Mark have a look at Magellan Motorcycle Tours website. Where are you in the world? There are two companies in the UK that they recommend to hire bikes from. I’m guiding the Norway tour leaving on 27th July. Should you decide to go on a tour mention my name.

    • @marklloyd4153

Mark Holroyd I’m in Florida U.S.A. About a hour north of Orlando . I ride all year long here mild winters with extremely hot wet humid summers. After my surgery in mid April I will take a few months off to recover , but am definitely going to look your tour group up . Looked fantastic from what I’ve seen in your videos. I will fly one of my bikes or rent one . You and Toby do such fantastic videos . I really like the safety aspects you get into . I’m kind of nerdy that way . But when I’m better I will call them and mention your name . I would never have heard of Magellan if not for your videos. Probably in 2019 . Surgery is going to kick my ass I think . You & Toby keep up the good work.

Thanks Mark, interesting video as always. Sorry to hear about your little excursion into the stream, hope Cornish Stig was ok. I’ve now done 8.5k on my Tourance Nexts and my BMW mechanic tells me they’re good for another 2k, so I’m well pleased. From your own experience, how did the TNs compare to the Roadtec 01s duration wise and which did you prefer? Cheers, Andy

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Andy i have been getting 10 - 11 thousand miles out of my TN's. I had to change the 01's before they got to that distance as I was going on another tour. That said I'm sure they would be as good. My panicky 3's on my new bike are almost done so I will be putting 01's as my next pair of shoes, I loved them!
